- We have very little in the way of extreme weather this week but a couple of cold fronts, a weak low, and some warmer than average weather are all in the mix.
Basically, a weak low will cross the North Island today and tonight and bring some very patchy hit and miss rain and showers to the North Island. Heaviest falls look to be around East Cape and Gisborne.
Winds are fairly light in many regions but south to south westerlies this weekend look to pick up.

- The weather pattern around New Zealand isn’t very intense this week, perfect timing for Fieldays in Waikato with mostly settled weather although a few showery spells are likely (later Wednesday and 50/50 for Saturday for an isolated shower). Otherwise it’s fairly dry and certainly mild to begin with by day.
Around the country we see some heavy rain for the West Coast but also the opposite side of the country, up around Gisborne and East Cape as a low tracks by mid to late week there.
A southerly flow enhances across the country on Sunday ahead of high pressure from the west.

- New Zealand’s more unsettled weather pattern continues this weekend and possibly through next week as high pressure slips further away allowing for lows and cold fronts to move in.
A cold front is currently moving up the nation and will clear the North Island on Friday. Behind this is a windier change for all of NZ as we head into Saturday - but it does ease by Sunday.
Next week high pressure kicks off the week but it may be pushed away by another low moving in from the Tasman Sea or Southern Ocean - one to keep an eye on.

A cold front moves up the South Island on Thursday with western rain and snow higher up - this cold change sweeps over the North Island on Friday and winds strengthen further.

On Friday things start to cool down as the colder air moves in. The main southerly moves up the South Island across Friday and into the North Island late Friday and early Saturday.
By Saturday NZ will be in ‘peak cold’ as the main southerly spreads as far north as the Far North.
Sunday is showery and cold for some, but more than half of the country will also be dry and fairly sunny.
Monday is warmer - but it’s ahead of another big low (and southerly) coming in mid to late next week.

The southerly arrives in the Deep South on Thursday morning and slowly moves northwards across Thursday and Friday.
By Friday night the main southerly change moves over the North Island meaning Saturday will be colder than average in most parts of New Zealand.
Sunday, however, does see drier weather in many regions (showers in the east) and Queen’s Birthday Monday looks warmer with westerlies and sunnier in the east (but a few showers in the west again).

- Make the most of the calmer weather - next week is looking very different. WeatherWatch.co.nz has today revised the width of the high pressure belt currently over New Zealand and Australia and we now estimate it stretches over 11,000km from west to east.
Today this high is at its maximum width - in the days ahead it shrinks and crosses NZ allowing for a warmer sub-tropical breeze to develop.
But next week this belt of high pressure is replaced by perhaps an equally enormous area of low pressure. It will take a few days to affect the North Island next week but by later next week we may be seeing some severe weather and wintry conditions developing.

- The huge belt of high pressure continues to affect NZ but it’s bringing some gloomy weather to the west, sunny weather in the east and above normal daytime temperatures in both islands.
This trend continues all week with the high transition from west of NZ to east of NZ this weekend and that encourages a new easterly flow for the upper North Island and a more sub-tropical or Aussie wind flow further south.
This mild weather continues through until early to mid next week - but we may then be dealing with a couple of large lows. One to monitor.

- A huge high from Australia is about to affect our weather until early next week but it’s not all plain sailing with some showers in the forecast and a few subtle wind direction changes.
Generally speaking this enormous high (which is over 9000kms wide from east to west) is already moving in and will bring settled weather, cool nights and mild days for the next several days. The high won’t depart NZ until early next week.

- Cyclone Ann is going to make landfall in northern Queensland on Wednesday as a Category 1 tropical cyclone, or very near that strength.
It means Ann is more of a sea and rain event than a wind event - although winds may be strong enough to cause some lower end damage to trees and buildings. Rainfall totals around Cairns could be over 150mm while wave heights moving into popular tourist beaches north of Cairns may be as high as 6 to 8 metres.

- We have an out of season tropical cyclone in the Coral Sea called Ann which formed over the weekend. The tropical storm poses no threat to New Zealand but is expected to track westwards into northern Queensland as a weakened tropical low later this week. This means rain will be the main feature, not wind.
For NZ we have a cool and windy south west change today but despite the temperature drop (of several degrees) most regions are either average or still remaining above normal for this time of year. Some south eastern sections of both islands may be below average today but that is those areas are in the minority. Warmer weather returns to the south on Tuesday.

Over the next few days high pressure remains parked between the South Island and the Chatham Islands and this will increasingly bring a sub-tropical northerly flow to NZ. A cold front moves over the South Island on Thursday then another moves over both islands this weekend.

It’s all caused by the placement of this large high which will encourage a northerly flow that increasingly becomes sub-tropical next week and lifts overnight lows into double digits at times across both islands. Daytime highs will climb into the late teens and early 20s.

- Rain is moving up the West Coast today with heavy falls while a few showers are affecting some western parts of the North Island.
As we head into Thursday this cold front crosses the North Island with a burst of rain and showers - it may not be enough for the driest regions but it will be helpful.
Colder southerlies surge off and on over the days ahead but a large high rolls in next week and looks likely to linger right up until - and possibly through - Easter weekend.

- The North Island has a couple of cooler nights on the way but the South Island is warming up with nor’westers developing ahead of a cold front on Wednesday.
This front will bring rain to the West Coast with heavy falls and then moves into the North Island on Thursday and falls apart - we bring you the latest rainfall totals expected.
We also have a look at the weekend where high pressure builds but so too do south to south east winds. We have a colder end to the working week and a colder start to next week too thanks to a combination of high pressure and southerly flows.

- We have a typical Autumnal week this week which sees a variety of weather with warmer conditions moving in across the next couple of days for many places before a cold front on Wednesday and Thursday.
The good news is that this cold front will likely bring more rain and showers in to very dry parts of the North Island later this week.
Meanwhile we head back over to Western Australia for the latest on Tropical Cyclone Wallace. The good news today is that the storm is looking increasingly stuck offshore.

- The weekend and even the start of next week looks a little repetitive around NZ with a large block of high pressure crossing over parts of the South Island while windier E to SE winds affect the North Island bringing cloud and showers in to the east and pushing inland to some degree.
It will be fairly cold going into Saturday for the South Island first thing but temperatures will gradually lift into next week.
Speaking of next week, a more classic Autumn set up with a cold front moving up the country mid week from the west.
Meanwhile Western Australia’s next cyclone still looks highly like to form and reach Severe Cat 3 status. But the modelling about the precise tracking next week still remains unclear - we show you to the two different possible outcomes.

- An enormous area of high pressure is centred over Tasmania and covers much of Australia and the Tasman Sea - stopping significant rainmakers from reaching NZ. However the air flow around the high will encourage showers, some may be a little heavy in eastern areas. These showers look likely to become more confined to the North Island overall but some will definitely impact the South Island too.
It will be cooler for the next few days and nights with frosts possible through the South Island mountains tonight and again early Saturday.
We also take a look at Western Australia where the Pilbara is expecting another tropical cyclone next week and may well make landfall in the same place Cyclone Veronica did a couple of weeks ago, around Port Headland and Karratha.

- High pressure may be building around the South Island in the days to come but many places will have a cooler easterly flow with showers in the east of both islands at times, in particular between Wairarapa and Gisborne.
The weekend is fairly dry but a few showers still affect some northern eastern places.
By early next week the nation is under a warmer sub-tropical airflow once again with another cold front approaching the country from the south west.

- The next several days ahead have a similar theme to them with cooler weather in eastern areas and warmer, drier, weather in the west.
A cold front on Thursday and Friday will head north bringing another surge of showers and cooler air to southern and eastern areas.
By the weekend a sub-tropical low nearby will be interacting with high pressure over the South Island - this creates an area of east to south east winds blowing over the North Island, perhaps strengthening further on Sunday.

A cooler SW change comes in behind it bringing a cooler Tuesday.
The rest of the week sees high pressure over the South Island, bringing easterlies the North Island with showers in eastern areas. The upcoming weekend looks similar - a mix of high pressure and showers.

- We have warmer weather coming in this weekend as an enormous high near the Chatham Islands drifts away from us and pulls down sub-tropical N to NE winds.
On Sunday these winds turn more N to NW and will make for a warm night and day.
It’s all ahead of a cold front connected to the remnants of ex-cyclone Trevor which will bring in some rain to NZ on Monday. The totals vary across the country so we take a look at the forecast rainfall accumulation between now and next Tuesday. High pressure returns by Wednesday.

- A front has weakened and stalled over the upper North Island leaving behind cloud and showers for the next day or two ahead. Many other areas are a little cooler today but that will change again this weekend as sub-tropical north to north west winds develop and kick in even more on Sunday.
By Monday a band of rain again moves up the country with some heavy falls on the West Coast (not a repeat of what we had this week but still may be enough to prompt a rain warning). Like this week’s front it will weaken later in the day as it moves into the upper North Island - but more relief is possible here and there across the North Island on Monday.
Beyond that high pressure again returns and dominates NZ’s weather until the second week of April.
