- The intense rain that moved up the West Coast on Tuesday with spectacular rainfall totals is now falling apart and weakening as it moves into the North Island. There will be some relief in northern areas from this front and again another front arriving on Monday.
The weekend is looking mostly settled but there may be a few showers, especially in the upper North Island on Saturday.
Next week, as we say another front arrives on Monday and this may be the best shot in a while at rain in the dry north.
High pressure returns next week with more dry and warmer than average weather coming in April.

- Description
- Heavy rain continues on the West Coast today with a chance of slips and flooding until Wednesday afternoon when the front finally moves into the North Island and weakens under high pressure. Still, the front should bring some relief into dry parts of the North Island late Wednesday and Thursday.
Warmer than average weather moves in this weekend with humidity coming back. Next week the remnants of Cyclone Trevor team up with another front to bring maybe the best chance yet at rain into northern NZ. One to watch.
We also have a final look at what is happening in Australia with the two tropical storms which are now both falling apart entirely.

- The new Autumn pattern is here and it means more changeable weather and finally getting some windier weather too, after what has been a remarkably calm start to 2019.
The warmer than average pattern continues for another few days with torrential rain on the West Coast leading to some impressive rainfall totals.
We also track the remnants of Cyclone Trevor, now just a rain maker lying over Queensland. However next week this area of rain looks to move out over the Tasman Sea and combine with a cold front and there is a chance the dry North Island may finally get some relief. Not yet locked in, so today we bring you the outlook.

- Description
- Two major cyclones are both making landfall in Australia this weekend and while both are in fairly remote parts of Australia both are definitely worth monitoring with Cyclone Trevor dumping huge rainfall totals in the central desert and then out east over Queensland eventually.
To the west Cyclone Veronica is more aggressive and will affect potentially 30 to 40,000 people, bringing huge seas, damaging winds and torrential rain to a normally very dry part of Australia.
We have the latest animations, including how much rain these systems will drop across Australia in the days ahead.

- New Zealand has a fairly quiet weekend weatherwise with just a few showers here and there, otherwise warmer than average. There may be some morning cloud and fog patches too.
However by Sunday a wind will be developing over the South Island ahead of a stormy systems in the Southern Ocean next week. While the storm won’t directly hit NZ it will send a burst of wind, rain and colder air up the South Island. But this front is unlikely to bring much relief to those in the north.
Finally we take a look at the remnants of Cyclone Trevor - which makes landfall in NT, Australia in the next 24 hours - which will drift in to Queensland in the coming days and may eventually make it out in to the Tasman Sea by the end of March.

- The extended summer weather has been welcome by many but as we head into next week there is definitely a change coming. Today, Thursday March 21st, is the Equinox which means it’s the start of Autumn on the astronomical calendar in the Southern Hemisphere and the start of spring in the north.
While NZ’s weather looks settled for the next few days with just a few drizzle patches and afternoon isolated showers it’s the forecast next Tuesday and Wednesday which sees a big storm in the Southern Ocean slide past NZ pushing up a cold front, heavy rain on the West Coast, strong nor’westers in the east and central areas and a mid-week cool down in the south, with daytime highs potentially dropping by 10 degrees.

Meanwhile out west and another cyclone has formed, named Veronica. Both Trevor and Veronica are likely to end up unravelling over the Australian desert this Sunday and Monday, which isn’t something that happens very often!
New Zealand’s weather is very quiet this week apart from a few possible isolated afternoon downpours here and there. Otherwise it’s fairly cloudy, calm and mainly dry,

Trevor was upgraded to a ‘severe’ Category 3 cyclone on Monday evening by Australian forecasters.
Meanwhile in New Zealand conditions are fairly quiet this week weatherwise but we do have a few downpours, possibly with thunder, in the mix later this week. Generally speaking NZ has high pressure and light winds until the weekend.
Next week there may be a classic cold front arriving - we’ll have more details tomorrow about how next week is shaping up but a windy and wet event is likely one week from today in two thirds of the country.

Wednesday sees a cooler sou’west change for the lower South Island but most other parts of New Zealand have warmer than average sub-tropical northerly quarter breezes.
This weekend low pressure forms in the Tasman Sea and should create rain clouds that eventually end up crossing parts of NZ from the west.
Meanwhile mid-next week we may have a sub-tropical low reaching northern NZ while a potentially tropical cyclone deepens in the Coral Sea off Queensland’s coast.

- We have a cooler change coming in the south on Thursday night and that will help generate some rain over the North Island on Friday.
For many dry areas this rain is overdue. The jury is still out about precise totals and who is most likely to get the rain but the latest indicators suggest the North Island has 15 to 30mm coming for the most part and some may get double that (but more isolated). We’ll have more details in our Thursday video.
Meanwhile high pressure continues to dominate the NZ area even with some of this wet weather.
Next week shows more high pressure but also a couple of weak small lows too, perhaps a sign that Autumn’s more changeable pattern is slowly starting to wake up - but it does look slow, we still see plenty more high pressure coming in from Australia this month.

- Cyclone Pola reached “severe” category 3 status late yesterday and will be a powerful offshore storm for another 48 hours or so. The positive news is that Pola is missing most, if not all, populated places and will skirt Tonga today just out to the west.
Meanwhile Pola isn’t likely to impact New Zealand very much this Saturday when it’s at its closest point to the North Island. Perhaps a few light showers caught up in the breezy to brisk SE wind flow. Also some bigger waves and more dangerous rips and currents as a result of the offshore storm this weekend in some eastern beaches from Northland to East Cape.
Otherwise NZ is mostly dry for the next two weeks ahead. We take a look at the 14 day rainfall accumulation map which shows many places remaining very dry with the bulk of the rain falling in our rain forest, Fiordland.

However, just like with Cyclone Neil two weeks ago, Pola is tracking south away from the tropics and over cooler waters - so won’t be lasting too long.
Tonga will be skirted by Pola and those on the island should be closely monitoring, but latest guidance shows the storm further at sea than Neil. Pola is strengthening over the next 24 hours, then should weaken again the following day(s).
Meanwhile in New Zealand today we have another cold front moving in from the Southern Ocean bringing a burst of heavy rain to the southern half of the West Coast and some spillover into Southland and Otago.

- WeatherWatch.co.nz is monitoring two areas of concern that may produce more cyclones. The first has a moderate to high chance of forming in the next couple of days east of Fiji at sea (not heading to Fiji but instead tracking SW towards New Zealand). This storm, regardless of if it makes a technical tropical cyclone status, will likely come closer to NZ than Oma did and while it poses no direct threat it may churn up some of our beaches in the north.
Following that another storm may form well north of Fiji (again not impacting Fiji directly) and may be one to monitor as we head into the second week of March.
But the NZ area looks set to be smothered by high pressure for another 10 days, perhaps after that a chance of a rainmaker. Southern NZ and the West Coast gets some rain on Wednesday as another cold front moves through briefly.

Another tropical storm is also forming, this time well out to NZ’s north east. It will come close to the country later this week to our east and may drive in bigger swells, dangerous rips in eastern beaches of the North Island and maybe a touch of high cloud, otherwise high pressure in the NZ area looks likely to dominate.
The high over NZ means areas that are dry and missed out on soaking weekend rain may have much drier conditions still to come.

- More heat, sun and dry but a cool change on Friday/Saturday for many (29/01/19)

- Description
- We take a look at the hot weather across large parts of the country and we also go to the tropics where there is a big jump in energy north of New Zealand for the first half of February.
But in the days ahead we have more hot weather, several degrees above normal and consistently so for a number of days in a row. Not everyone is impacted by the heatwave (like coastal western areas of both islands), however warm nights are on the way there while hot days are kicking in again inland today and for the next few days with highs in the low even mid 30s.
By Friday a cold front reaches the South Island and moves into the North Island on Saturday and falls apart - but many areas will get a temperature drop, some by a few degrees, others by over 10 degrees on where they are this week…and this cool change will reset a lot of places back to normal, not colder than normal.

- We have both Nelson and Auckland Anniversary weekends this weekend with over half the country taking Monday off. Australia is in the middle of a heatwave with Melbourne today forecast to reach 43 degrees. Some of this heat will drift across the Tasman Sea this weekend boosting temperatures into the 30s in eastern and inland areas of both islands. In fact Nelson might reach 33 degrees on Monday.
Next week sees mostly dry weather around New Zealand but some wet weather down towards Fiordland and South Westland.
Most places on holiday on Monday look dry, fairly sunny and hot. There may be cloudy weather at times in the west of both islands due to the westerly quarter set up.

- [[Cricket Correction: Weather for the cricket is completely dry today/tonight as it's being played in Napier - not Canterbury as Phil mistakenly says]].
NZ has a cold front moving northwards up the South Island today and will reach the North Island overnight and lie over the upper North Island for Thursday PM. Most places won’t have a lot of rain but we do expect 5 to 30mm generally speaking.
The lower South Island will be much cooler than normal for Thursday but bounces back to some degree in the days ahead.
But it’s Sunday and next week that will see much more heat spread across New Zealand with highs in the late 20s and early 30s - and a few pockets may even reach the mid 30s.

- Description
- The not-so-normal-summer-week continues as we get more of a spring/autumn pattern over the country with temperature fluctuations of over 10 degrees in both islands and surges of wind.
Winds will be westerly quarter for the most part with hot Nor’Westers in some places and much cooler Sou’Westers for others.
A weak cold front moves up the North Island on Thursday and falls apart in the east on Friday.
The weekend sees another low in the Southern Ocean bringing more wind and rain to some parts of the South Island - but also a surge of not nor’westers for eastern regions.

- We’re back and in our first video of 2019 we take a detailed look at the State of the Nation weatherwise as we approach the middle of summer.
We also take a look at the forecast up until Saturday and the weather pattern around New Zealand this week is especially unsettled with two big storms in the Southern Ocean brushing the South Island with heavy rain, strong winds at times and real fluctuations in temperatures which will make for hot and cold days.
The North Island isn’t as unsettled, although it will be windy around Cook Strait, hot at times in the east (pushing 30 degrees) and cloudier with a few showers in the west and around Bay of Plenty.

- Description
- In our final video of 2018 we track the series of rain makers drifting past New Zealand from the north and how this will impact some people over the weekend and on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Those in the northern half of the North Island are most exposed to wet weather.
We look at the rest of next week as high pressure builds and a cooler southerly moves through for a day or so.
We also take a special long range look at the weather map for New Year’s Eve to get an idea on where all the highs and lows are lying as we head into January 2019.
Thank you all for your support this year on our YouTube channel - we look forward to expanding our content in 2019.
Our week day weather videos return mid to late January - we will have “RainWatch” news stories on our website as a replacement during this time. This is a special daily news story that focuses solely on rain and showers across New Zealand. Have a safe summer!

- Uh-oh, is that a sub-tropical low for Christmas Day? (20/12/18)

- Description
- In our second to last weather video of 2018 we take a close look at the forecast leading up to - and including - Christmas and Boxing Days. The forecast is a bit complicated with a couple of sub-tropical lows in the forecast affecting the North Island.
Christmas Day itself still looks dry for about 2/3 of New Zealand, but the 1/3 that might get some rain, drizzle or showers from the incoming low has half of NZ’s population living in it. This is still an evolving forecast but here is the latest as of today.

- The forecast for Christmas Day remains ‘one to monitor’ (19/12/18)

- Description
- While most of New Zealand looks set to have a dry Christmas Day a potential low/rainmaker in the north is one to monitor. The low is connected to a few other systems which will drag rain in this weekend to the country from the north west of NZ.
On Christmas Eve a new low may move in around Bay of Plenty (offshore) and hug the north east corner of the North Island as we head into Christmas Day.
It’s all down to the Tasman Sea high and whether or not it can push the low away in time for a sunny/dry December 25th. But main regions in northern NZ may just want to be aware rain or showers are possible…but still we are not ready to lock in where, for long long and how much. We have daily weather video updates on Friday so check back for more.

- Description
- We have just a week until Christmas but a number of low pressure systems on the way between now and then.
A low moves into the South Island on Wednesday with a big temperature drop thanks to a southerly change. This low moves into the North Island on Thursday.
By Saturday and Sunday another low sweeps over NZ from the Tasman Sea.
Next week high pressure dominates but around Christmas Eve and Christmas Day there may be a couple of systems to the very north and very south worth keeping an eye on if having a perfect Christmas Day outdoors means a lot to you.
