- Early spring is continuing to emerge with a big high this weekend bringing in warmer than average weather followed by a sub-tropical northerly flow developing next week.
It means a dry weekend is on the way for most of NZ with light winds too. The nights may still be a bit cold but the days are certainly warmer than average in most places by this weekend and certainly by early next week.
The low next week is complicated and nothing is yet locked in about precise placement of the centre or where rain and wind will be. We’ll have more details in our next update on Friday too.

- A weak cold front moves into the South Island on Thursday but generally speaking most of the country is enjoying average to warmer than average days this week and by the weekend and into next week things warm up even further.
In fact next Monday looks likely to kick off with sub-tropical winds descending across much of the country with a fairly calm and settled start to spring on the meteorological calendar.
August ends in style too, with high pressure bringing a mostly dry Saturday to New Zealand.

- We have more mild westerlies this week but a cold front on Thursday and Friday drops temperatures just a little ahead of a big high rolling in for the weekend.
The large high from Australia means August ends on a high and September kicks off with one.
However a sub-tropical low is drifting our way around early next week. It’s too early to know if it will directly come in or just miss us to the north east - one to watch.

- August is going out with a westerly theme which means some places will be warmer than average, others bang on average. Rainfall this week is lower but western parts of the South Island have normal rainfall.
By the end of this week high pressure grows around NZ with a calm start to next week likely.
However we’re also tracking a sub-tropical low this weekend in the Tasman Sea which, early next week, may clip northern NZ. After that, it looks like more spring-like westerlies may be on the way.

- We have a windier change coming in behind the large low currently in the NZ area. We’ll see a south to south west change for a time, then most places turn milder again with westerlies.
The windy weather is also whipping up marine conditions with dangerous beach and sea conditions on Saturday around western NZ and it slowly eases on Sunday.
Next week NZ’s weather is dominated by westerlies with W to SW winds most days with colder weather in the south, warmer weather in the north and driest weather in the east.

- Once NZ gets the windier westerlies at this time of year we also get an uptick in allergies as pollen (mostly from Pine trees at this stage) gets caught up in the wind.
We track the warmer than average airflow from the west until it changes cooler S to SW on Friday PM.
The weekend looks windier with west to sou’west winds blowing through and another cold front on Sunday moving up the South Island. Next week looks like a continuation of Sunday’s weather with more west to south west winds surging up and down making for sunny and dry in the east but showery and cooler in the west.

- Another week and another big low. NZ has that sinking feeling as a low bringing dynamic weather moves in.
There are a number of moving parts to this set up meaning some areas have rain, snow, thunderstorms and showers, others have sun, dry and extra warmth.
The low crosses NZ on Saturday then deepens out to our east ahead of a small classic cold front on Sunday moving up NZ.
Next week kicks off with westerlies and higher air pressure.

- NZ has another deep low moving in this week bringing a burst of wind and rain then colder air. It will drive in some big waves on the western side of both islands too with dangerous marine conditions for a time late this week.
The set up means the North Island and western South Island are in for much more rain in the days ahead.
More snow for the Southern Alps and most ski fields too with a late week southerly change - but things dry back up early on Saturday for many as the low moves away.

- We have some warmer weather on the way but it’s ahead of a cold Saturday southerly moving up the South Island while a low pressure system forms around the country this weekend too.
We have high pressure building around the South Island on Sunday and next week kicks off fairly settled across the country - but a windier, unsettled, week looks likely with more westerlies and a couple more lows on the way.
We have snow to low levels for a time this Saturday too in the lower South Island, possibly down to 100 or 200m for a time.

- We have a calming down in our weather but we have a bit of a windy Wednesday (with showers) firstly, then this evening the winds finally die down.
Over tonight and across Thursday many regions will be calmer and dry or mainly dry - but it’s ahead of a West Coast rain band on Friday, then a colder southerly on Saturday in the South Island that may again see some lower level snow (possibly down to 200m).
The North Island has fairly mild weather (except for tonight) up until the end of Saturday, but Sunday looks wetter and colder especially in the north and east as a colder S to SE flow moves in and a low possibly forms over the upper North Island with some rain.

- We have a huge complex area of low pressure cover much of the Tasman Sea, all of New Zealand and the skies south and east of us.
Low pressure brings unstable weather so heavy downpours, squalls and thunderstorms will continue on Monday along the western and northern North Island with gusty winds at times. However the South Island has a fairly calm Monday, ahead of a colder Tuesday and Wednesday coming.
As a storm well south of NZ influences our weather pattern for the next few days ahead, encouraging colder air and single digit highs for a large portion of the South Island on Tuesday and/or Wednesday.
High pressure somewhat arrives later this week.

- A surge of heavy rain and snow will be crossing the country this weekend as a deepening large low moves in.
Winds will pick up from the NW over the North Island on Sunday with more rain, mostly in the west. Eastern parts of the North Island look mostly dry.
However the South Island has both rain and snow with precipitation falling on both western and eastern coastlines.
Next week a storm well south of NZ will help dredge up a colder southerly, mostly for the South Island, with wintry weather peaking on Tuesday then easing.

- An enormous area of low pressure is forming near New Zealand over the next several days and it will produce heavy rain and strong westerly winds this weekend in some regions (mostly the west) then next week it turns more southerly in the south.
Latest data continues to support a very cold start to the next week in the south, which is problematic due to lambing and calving now underway. Sea level snow is possible but even if not, low level snow to 100 or 200m looks likely along with sub zero wind chills.
The upper North Island isn’t so impacted by the cold, but may be windy at times with possible gales.

- We’re in a warming up phase for the next few days but a very large low will form this weekend into a storm and by early next week it will lie over the Southern Ocean and likely sends another polar blast our way.
It’s not 100% locked in but the modelling has been fairly consistent for the past few days. We should be able to lock things in by Thursday.
The low may not be so cold and stormy for northern NZ next week, but those in the south face another winter blast with sea level snow again possible in Southland, Fiordland and maybe Otago for a time but there will still be large, sunny, dry areas too.

- We have a special long range forecast today, right through until Tuesday of next week as we track a potential second polar blast for parts of NZ.
The cold south west flow over New Zealand today has affected flights in and out of Dunedin, affected farms and highways and brought squally hail showers to the western North Island. On Sunday it even brought snow to sea level on the West Coast, which is rare.
Conditions warm up this week and some will even have sub-tropical breezes for a time. There’s a brief localised South Island southerly on Thursday then this weekend a large low crosses the country with rain and showers.
But it’s next week where NZ may once again face another southerly - and potentially, this one may be even colder for some if long range models pan out.

- It’s been much warmer than average by day lately - that all changes this week as winter wakes up and smacks the reset button.
Heavy snow will fall in the Southern Alps and Central North Island mountains - snow is possible on the Desert Road and also alpine passes in the South Island. Snow may also fall in Queenstown and to other lower lying centres - but not likely to settle below 300m.

- We have foggy areas, sunny areas, some places are totally dry while others have showers, drizzle and patchy rain. New Zealand is stuck in between weather systems right now which means most of our ‘weather’ will be happening down at sea level whereas further inland the skies look clearer, drier and winds calm.

However what we got wrong doesn’t actually alter the temperture forecast we had which was for colder nights in some regions next week but still mild days.

- We have quite an unsettled week of weather coming up with at least three bursts of rain and a generally windier week, especially around the North Island.
The unsettled pattern will favour more rain across NZ that we’ve seen in recent weeks which will be good news for dry areas. As a rough rule the eastern side of NZ has 5 to 10mm coming while the West Coast has up to 125mm coming between now and the end of the working week, with 60mm for the lower western North Island and 30mm for the upper western North Island.
This weekend low pressure crosses the country and a southerly change comes in briefly before fading on Sunday as high pressure rolls in from the west.

The latest forecast shows a mostly dry few days ahead as this large Australian high finally moves in after slowly building to our west since Monday.

- Mild afternoons for this time of year but cold nights seems to be the theme this week as an enormous belt of high pressure slowly moves in.
This high - which is wider than Australia - will influence our weather bringing mostly dry weather and clear skies for this week and into the weekend too.
Next week the high slowly starts to depart to the east but it will take until mid week to do so. At that point - around Tuesday or Wednesday - we may get some sub-tropical rain.

- This weekend New Zealand has a cool down with rain arriving on Sunday for the North Island thanks to a small area of low pressure.
By Monday many regions will be colder but drier too as high pressure builds.
The high will take all of next week to even reach New Zealand - so mostly dry conditions are in the forecast for next week at this stage.

Blurb: Sub-tropical winds are developing across New Zealand and tonight will be milder nationwide compared to the past two nights and mornings.
We have some rain and showers around the next few days, mainly on the West Coast and then northern NZ. Totals generally aren’t too big.
Friday is warmer than average nationwide but a cool down is coming thanks to this enormous Aussie high - next week gets colder still. The high itself may not even reach NZ for another 9 or 10 days.

- New Zealand has a brief warm up - it’s overnight Thursday and across Friday. Then, the pattern changes to colder as we go through the weekend and colder still as we enter in to next week.
High pressure is currently crossing New Zealand bringing the light winds, clear skies at night and frosty conditions. This happens again tonight although in the very Far North that warmer sub-tropical breeze arrives bringing showers and some rain.
Friday is milder then southerly quarter winds kick in this weekend. A large high next week is likely to make this air flow colder both by day and by night.

- It’s more like Autumn this week as temperatures and weather patterns swing around from cold to mild and back to cold again.
The chaotic weather pattern does calm down for today and Wednesday as high pressure rolls in - bringing clear overnight skies to many regions so colder nights are coming with the chance of frosts in sheltered inland areas.
By Thursday sub-tropical winds are kicking in with a period of rain or showers over the country, then the weekend is a mix of large sunny/dry areas and showers - all caught up in a colder south to south east wind flow.

- We have a warmer than average Friday and Saturday across many parts of NZ but it changes on Saturday night in the South Island and spreads over 70% of the country into Sunday and Monday.
The cool down lingers into Tuesday too as high pressure rolls in bringing clearer skies and lighter winds.
This means frosts are possible in sheltered areas for a brief time next week in both islands.
However by late Wednesday or into Thursday a mild sub-tropical northerly flow is expected to form ahead of a Tasman Sea low that is likely to form next week.

- A weak but large area of low pressure is transiting over the North Island today and brought some early calm and foggy areas to Auckland and Waikato. On the eastern side if the island this system is driving in rain to dry Hawke’s Bay and also into Wairarapa too.
We have the latest 3 day rainfall totals for New Zealand as well as a closer look at the rainfall in the eastern North Island up until midnight tonight.
Meanwhile the warmer than normal afternoons in most parts of the country this week will give way this weekend to colder south to south west winds, with the coldest air peaking on Sunday and Monday, mostly over the South Island.
