- Depending on where you live the forecast coming up is either a wetter, windier and cooler one - or a windier, drier and warmer one. The common factor - wind.
We have more westerly quarter winds, tilting warmer nor’west at times, colder sou’west at other times. Eastern areas will be mainly dry and mild overall as a result of this set up.
This weekend some regions even get sub-tropical winds returning, especially around the North Island.

This week is dominated by westerly quarter winds with a southerly lean to begin with and northerly lean to end with.
A cold front mid week will bring another burst of western rain and showers and stronger westerlies - also a brief late week cool change for Southland.
This weekend looks warmer than normal for most regions with more heavy West Coast rain.

- It may have felt like summer in some places lately but spring is still with us and this weekend NZ gets a burst of strong to gale nor’westers with heavy western rain.
The North Island in particular is also dealing with a tropical airflow from Fiji making it feel more like the end of December rather than the start of November. Increased cloud cover this weekend will see temperatures dropping a little for some areas but still hot in the east.
Next week the nation gets a brief cool down (southerly) before the next hotter nor’wester with high pressure moves back in.

- We have temperatures about to soar into the late 20s and even early 30s in some pockets - could this be a heatwave? NZ’s MetService defines a heatwave as being 5 degrees above normal for more than 5 days. There may well be some pockets of the North Island and maybe upper South Island that could be contenders for this.
In fact temperatures will be over 10 degrees above normal this week in some southern regions with warmer weather running into next week too.
However a cool change around Tuesday and Wednesday, mainly around the South Island, may through some regions out of technically making it into a heatwave.
Either way, things are warming up for many - especially inland areas and those in the east.

- The weather is about to become warmer, even hot for some this weekend and early next week with the mercury likely reaching 30 degrees in some places.
However there is another concern developing - just how dry it is becoming already. Spring can be quite a dramatic season and we can transition very quickly from people complaining about too wet and wintry to suddenly too hot and dry.
We take a look at the pattern around NZ up until Tuesday next week and what this means for us all.

The South Island has a cold start with a dusting of snow to fairly low levels (perhaps 300m for some in the very south) - but a milder afternoon with sun should be on the way. But make the most of it as Thursday looks bleak again.

- It’s the countdown to Labour Weekend and the forecast this week is driven by windy westerlies which can swing cold SSW and mild NNW. For the most part the week kicks off about normal temperaturewise but a colder change develops over Tuesday and Wednesday.
Winds will be blustery across New Zealand with snow on the Southern Alps.
This set up remains all week and as we go into the long weekend too. We haven’t yet 100% locked in Labour Weekend but it looks like we’ll see a rapid warm up in places that have been cold this week, so there is one positive. - We are monitoring two lows, the first is a large but stalled low in the Tasman Sea the other is a second possibly more aggressive low early next week in northern NZ.
The Tasman Sea one will bring more heavy rain to the West Coast today and is helping create wintry conditions again around Southland and Otago - until Saturday.
The weekend is looking mostly dry in the North Island and milder in the lower South Island by Sunday.

- We have one low departing and another one coming. This weekend sees a fairly dry Saturday with winds easing but Sunday sees the return of another big low coming in to the North Island while the South Island deals with quite a cold southerly change.
On Monday this colder air pushes more into the North Island with rain turning to snow over the Central North Island and some heavy falls.
Mid next week we return to westerlies and fairly dry.

- We have two lows with sub-tropical connections and two Southern Ocean southerlies - all between now and Monday! Welcome to the chaos that is spring weather!
Basically we have a sub-tropical low moving in tonight in the upper North Island with a windy, cooler, SW change. Northland may be very windy for a time tonight.
On Friday the nation has a cooler change which fades on Saturday.
But on Sunday the North Island has milder winds while the South Island has much colder South Ocean winds. Monday next week sees a messy set up with rain, warm, cold and sun.

- We have the latest aerial footage via CNN showing catastrophic damage to The Bahamas over the past few days as Hurricane Dorian stalled above.
We also have the latest tracking map which paints a more positive picture for the USA as Dorian starts to finally weaken.
Meanwhile back in NZ we’re dealing with above average temperatures thanks to the sub-tropical northerly flow from Fiji today - but a colder change is coming on Friday.
On Sunday another big low crosses the North Island while colder air moves into the South Island with high pressure behind it.

- New Zealand has two big lows coming towards us between now and Sunday with both tapping into sub-tropical airflows and rain.
It’'s generally good news for the North Island that, despite what some may think, does actually need much more rain to set us up nicely for the drier months of summer.
Not everyone will agree the timing of the second low at the weekend may not be ideal though!
We also track the latest on Hurricane Dorian as it comes closer to the USA, in particular Florida and the Carolinas. We have the latest out of our affiliates at CNN...

- A low just north of NZ is deepening today and combining with a sub-tropical airflow. Later on Tuesday rain moves down from the north and reaches Auckland later in the day. There may be some heavy falls overnight and into Wednesday as the low moves closer.
By Thursday it will be stretching down across the country and starting to weaken and move away later on. It’s then followed by a more classic spring-like change to colder southerlies on Friday then westerlies this weekend with another smaller low tracking in from the west.
We take a look at the forecast through until Saturday…

- A huge high from the west is moving in this weekend bringing mostly dry weather, light winds and mild afternoons. In fact the afternoons this weekend look warmer than average (but the nights look cooler than normal).
Next week starts off warm and settled with high pressure departing and sub-tropical northerly quarter winds moving in.
After that we have a sub-tropical low (or a rainmaker with sub-tropical connections) which may bring a burst of wind and rain to the North Island mid week.
