- A huge high is with NZ this week but Tropical Cyclone Yasa was named overnight near Fiji and Vanuatu and it will remain here at sea for a numbers of days, growing in intensity but not moving too far.
This cyclone poses a threat to both Vanuatu and Fiji at this time and also poses some threat to New Zealand in about a week. For now, the focus is mostly on Vanuatu and Fiji.
At the same time another storm has formed near Tonga and the Cook Islands. This storm may also become a tropical cyclone but should be shorter lived.
We have the latest details on the South Pacific tropical storms, eastern Aussie’s wet weather and NZ’s big high - and how long that will last.

- It’s snowing in some parts of the South Island today with a chance of a frost early into Saturday morning. The cooler change spreads up NZ resetting temperatures to normal for some and going below normal for others.
Next week NZ’s weather is dominated by a lot of high air pressure. We’re continuing to track the likely cyclone north of NZ - with some modelling suggesting NZ may be directly impacted around Christmas Eve.
We can’t stress enough this is not yet locked in - but we’re sharing what the reliable models we trust most are suggesting.

- Both New Zealand and eastern Australia have some dynamic, changeable, weather coming over the next week or so.
New Zealand hits reset on Friday and Friday night with a colder change sweeping up NZ and removing that northern humidity - but incredibly brings a mid-December frost risk to some inland parts of the South Island.
Next week a small offshore storm hits Sydney and brushes other eastern areas while in the tropics between Fiji and Vanuatu a tropical cyclone is expected to form - and may well reach NZ (or the NZ area) in about 10 days from now.

For places like Hawke’s Bay, which have been over 15 degrees above normal lately, by Thursday it will be several degrees below average with a drop in daytime highs from Monday to Thursday of 19 degrees at this stage in some locations.
In saying that, there will only be a light dusting of snow - and by Friday/the weekend warm weather returns.

In our latest monthly climate update we take a look at the large areas of high pressure dominating the New Zealand area, especially northern NZ and how La Nina may not be long lived or powerful enough to bring in too much wet weather. Still, it has formed and we do see some increase in northern low pressure later into October.
For Auckland’s water shortage crisis it’s more bad news - at least for the first half of the month. However some indicators show some normal rainfall may return - but it’s not locked in yet.
Many regions look fairly dry to begin with this month - and milder than normal too not just in October, by likely for the rest of 2020 overall.

- A ‘weather bomb’ is likely to form this weekend, that’s a rapidly deepening low that will see the central air pressure plummet from around 980hPa on Saturday to 930hPa on Monday.
The low itself is NOT going over the top of NZ but it will grow so large over the Southern Ocean it will bring strong winds, snow and sub zero wind chills to parts of the lower South Island and gales may spread as far north as Auckland City.

- A significant Antarctic blast is heading towards New Zealand as a low rapidly deepens this weekend. Air pressure will go from 980hPa on Saturday to 937hPa on Monday.
The storm will dredge up a southerly from Antarctica that, at this stage anyway, looks likely to bring a very cold Monday to Southland, Otago and the West Coast.

- A rapidly deepening storm will track past NZ this weekend and grow into a serious storm over the Southern Ocean across Sunday and Monday, sending severe gales and cold winds back into NZ.
Northern NZ will be least affected by it - but even gales in the north are possible.
The South Island and central part of NZ (around Cook Strait) look to be most impacted by the winds and colder air.
We take a detailed look at this low, which should reach criteria to be classed as a ‘weather bomb’ - when air pressure falls more than 24hPa in 24 hours.

- We have some very mild weather next couple days but it’s ahead of a large storm likely to form by Sunday and next Monday south of NZ - but brushing NZ.
The winds are likely to be very strong with a barametric pressure drop of 100hPa between a high in Aussie and this storm forecast in the Southern Ocean (based on today’s models).
It’s important to note the storm is not forecast to directly hit NZ = but severe weather is likely in both islands.

- This week will be several degrees warmer than average in a number of regions but in true spring style a cool down is coming by the weekend.
The temperature ups and downs are normal in September but this week is definitely leaning warmer than usual due to sub-tropical winds and nor’westers.
By the weekend there is a chance of a cold southerly developing - but before then more mild weather in many places with most of the wet weather in the west of NZ.

- We have another surge of gales coming on Thursday with Severe Gales in the upper South Island and Central NZ area.
On Thursday another cold front moves up the South Island, reaching the North Island by Friday and clearing northern NZ by the end of the day. It will drop temperatures nationwide.
But this weekend high pressure is returning - clearing remaining showers by the end of Saturday and making for a settled Sunday nationwide.
