- High pressure is crossing NZ with temperatures over 8 degrees above normal in the eastern South Island - giving way to being a few degrees below normal on Thursday as a cold front moves up the country.
This cold front will fall apart as it moves into the North Island late week.
By the weekend high pressure returns bringing colder nights (some frosts on Friday/Saturday mornings) and then more mild weather.

- We have our monthly climate update and as we take a look at September we can see an ‘air pressure sandwich’ forming.
What does that mean? It basically means that (for weeks) we have a belt of high pressure running to our north and a belt of low pressure to our south. The “filling” of this air pressure ‘sandwich' becomes the windy westerlies - which look set to dominate New Zealand for the first two to three weeks of September.

- We have a few thunderstorms and windy nor’westers returning to parts of NZ today (mostly northern NZ) and as we go through Friday more windy westerlies will blow through the North Island with showers. The east will be warm and mainly dry.
This weekend Saturday sees a brief breather before Sunday’s clouds, winds and showers move in.
By early next week low pressure smothers New Zealand followed by a cooler, typically August-like, sou’wester for the rest of next week and likely the rest of the month of August.
