Description: A burst of rain is moving up the nation over the next day but it may be Hawke’s Bay that benefits the most from this wet, cooler, sou’easter. Rainfall totals may approach 50 to 70mm in some places over the next 7 days.

But many other places have just 2 to 15mm coming, along with an Autumnal temperature drop.

Description: La Nina continues to fade but we’re also now in the peak of the sea surface temperatures. The tropics look very busy in the South Pacific/Australia region with several lows developing over the next 10 days. One of them, in the Coral Sea area, looks likely to become a tropical cyclone.

The Southern Ocean becomes stormier this month too, a bit like we saw in January with big lows which bring in a few southerlies for the New Zealand area.

Overall, nothing too extreme for the NZ and Australia regions in the month ahead - but certainly looking more like an Autumn weather pattern now with more low pressure.

Description: It was frosty in some South Island locations this morning ahead of a large belt of high pressure about to cross all of NZ in the days ahead. This big high will push away the sub-tropical low and any rain for the North Island.

Overnight lows will be below average in many places for the next four nights though, while daytime temperatures bounce back above average for many by Friday or into the weekend.

Next week a storm in the Tasman Sea and a low near Fiji / Tonga will be worth monitoring.

Description: We have a messy start to this week - then a very settled end to it.

Low pressure out of the sub-tropics coupled with a powerful (and growing) high between Fiordland and Tasmania means we have a windy few days ahead with easterlies especially strong through central NZ/Cook Strait area.

Rain will be heaviest in the north eastern corner of the North Island.

Meanwhile the incoming high will bring some cold nights and possible frosts to some interior parts of the South Island - this same high brings a calm end to the week and, likely, a calm and sunny weekend coming up too.

Description: An ex-cyclone, a tropical depression and a Southern Ocean low will all be affecting NZ in various ways this week - but a mainly dry week is the on way with the North Island perhaps getting 10mm in showers - so may be lucky and receive a little more, others may be less fortunate, like Canterbury.

Wednesday and Thursday will be cooler than average in a large portion of the South Island.

Next week there are some chances of a sub-tropical low, potentially bringing another 20mm (roughly) for northern NZ. Early days - worth keeping an eye on.

Description: NZ has the risk of a Tropical Cyclone next week but first we have a burst of hot, then cold, weather coming in.

The next two days will see parts of NZ with temperatures over 10 degrees above normal. By Thursday some places in the South Island will be almost 10 degrees below normal for this time of the year. It’s a very dramatic mid-summer change yet again - although not as big as the one last week.

This week has high pressure calming things down.

However next week all eyes will be on the tropics between NZ and Fiji with a high risk of a tropical cyclone forming and a 35% chance it may impact New Zealand, according to WeatherWatch.co.nz (up from 30% risk yesterday).

Description: We’re entering the peak of summer now and this week the temperatures shoot up into the 30s for many places, some may even climb above the mid 30s inland and to the east.

However, we do have another cold change coming on Thursday with temperatures dropping as much as 20 degrees (huge change!). This cold change will be shorted lived and gone by the weekend though.

This weekend high pressure rolls in.

Next week all eyes go to the north. La Nina has peaked but we’re still in the middle of it so rainmakers are highly likely. Modelling does show a low next week north of NZ that is one to monitor.

Description: The humid, warm, weather across many parts of NZ will be pushed away on Christmas Day but a colder southerly change.

This southerly will head northwards on Boxing Day and into Sunday as well. Temperatures will be below normal in the very south and east of both islands at some point.

Next week sees high pressure growing across the country bringing sunny, dry, weather for a time.

Description: An unsettled weather pattern is forecast for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day around New Zealand with a colder southerly moving northwards but remaining mostly dry in the very north of the country.

It will be a little windy in some places (not stormy) and a little wet in the South Island and lower North Island over the several days ahead.

We have an extra detailed forecast up to this Sunday.

Description: Yasa is a Severe Cat 5 Cyclone for the history books - and it hasn’t made landfall in Fiji yet. The major storm is expected to make landfall in Fiji later today or tonight.

The storm has winds gusting to 315km/h, 12 metre waves and is expected to bring up to 300mm of rain in some parts.

We have the very latest tracking and forecast as of Thursday morning.
