- We have a super blood moon, an eclipse, the coldest morning of the year so far with -10C in the South Island, a big low offshore and another big low on the way this weekend. It’s a busy time!
The forecast tonight looks pretty good in most regions - but some in the east of the North Island sadly will have cloud fo the eclipse.
This weekend a big low moves in - bringing wintry weather for some, but calm conditions for others.

- A very large and complex low pressure system will develop over the Tasman Sea and New Zealand area this Friday and Weekend and may generate heavy eastern rain in the South Island, snow down to low levels, single digit highs and more windy weather.
The colder, windy, south to south east flow will also impact eastern Australia, such as Sydney and Brisbane.

- A storm will develop this weekend just shy of the North Island and will linger there until Thursday of next week. The worst of the weather will be just offshore, but the system will be so close to northern NZ it’s certainly one to closely monitor with severe weather risks.
Further south high pressure will be dominating with a surge of colder, frostier, weather in the lower South Island by Sunday/Monday.
Over in Aussie showers and a cooler sou’east flow affects the eastern side while next week a windy northerly will make way for a low and a colder, windier, sou’west flow for places like Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart.

- A southerly change is spreading northwards today and will bring a wintry Tuesday to inland and southern parts of the South Island. It’s windy in many other places with plenty of westerly showers. Another weaker cold front arrives on Friday.
This weekend a sub-tropical low will compete with a powerful high near Tasmania and may bring in severe winds for northern NZ (not locked in).

- A tropical cyclone in Western Australia will likely make landfall there on Sunday night before the remnants reach NZ late next week in the form of a Southern Ocean low and western rainmaker.
The serious cyclone has already killed dozens of people in Indonesia and East Timor and while Category 1 on Thursday morning Aussie forecasters expect it to reach severe Cat 3 status within 48 hours.
The remnants will likely reach NZ next Friday, but before then another two low pressure systems will impact NZ - the first this weekend and the second at the start of next week.

NZ can expect mainly dry weather for the next week at least, with well below normal rainfall. However some eastern parts of the North Island will be clipped by a few showers. The South Island is almost entirely dry, even Fiordland only has 2 - 5mm in the next week, they sometimes get over 100mm a day!

- Another cooler change is moving up the country over the next 48 hours but by Wednesday a powerful (and growing) high pressure belt from just south of Aussie will be moving our way.
This southern high will bring more dry, settled, weather to the South Island (after the cool change) and for the North Island it will encourage more La Nina like easterlies later this week and into this weekend.

- High pressure is rolling in this weekend and that will lock in the cooler southerly that just moved up NZ. However by Sunday warmer winds return.
Next week heavy rain moves into South Westland but not much wet weather goes elsewhere, other than a few showers.
There’s another week southerly change on Tuesday too.

- Cooler air will fade away this weekend with warmer airflows arriving for most places by Sunday and Monday. High pressure from Australia will be moving in this weekend bringing mostly settled weather, although showers in the eastern North Island will take until the weekend to ease and clear.
Next week NZ is between high and low pressure meaning showers are likely here and there.
