- We have wet weather and some windy weather over the next couple of days ahead of a wintry blast coming in on Sunday and Monday (peaking Monday).
It will bring widespread snow and it may see some snow flurries getting down below 200m in the South Island - possibly to sea level.

- Wednesday is a calm, settled, day but Thursday and Friday see another large low moving in with a burst of rain and wind in some places, especially central and northern NZ.
This weekend a colder SWer kicks in for a time but turns milder NW in the North Island on Sunday. But this is all ahead of a colder, wintry, change that may see snow to low levels in Southand, Otago and parts of Canterbury and also into the eastern ranges of the North Island.

For NZ it means colder air moves up the country on Tuesday with gales in Wellington, Auckland and Northland for a time.
Another big low from the Tasman Sea moves in on Thursday and Friday.

- If you want La Nina don’t get too excited just yet - there are signs that La Nina is starting to form again but nothing is yet locked in.
Usually for New Zealand to be significantly impacted it needs to be a strong La Nina - afterall, it is measured at the equator. However scientists are focusing again on all signs pointing towards another La Nina later this year.
We take a look at incoming rainfall - with perhaps a more “normal” set up seeing western areas get the rain and eastern areas fairly dry.
Temperature-wise, just like July, most of NZ leans warmer than average.

- We have some wet weather coming in to NZ over the next week with a low near northern NZ this weekend then a large Tasman Sea low impacting much of the country later next week.
Mild northerlies will change to cooler southerlies next week, meaning August’s first week may be cooler than July’s last week.

- We measure air pressure using Hectopascals (hPa) and on Friday there will be a 101 hPa difference between a huge storm south west of NZ and a huge high south east of NZ. Normally the difference between highs and lows would be less than half that.
The low gets down to around 947hPa and the high gets up to 1048hPa - quite a stunning difference over such a short distance.
But, interestingly these giant systems are actually mostly impacting NZ’s weather positively - bringing milder conditions and buffering us from the severe conditions occurring around southern Australia.

- 60 to 150mm is forecast for the Nelson region this Sunday to Tuesday while gales will impact Australia from coast to coast (Perth to Sydney) along the entire southern coastline and then into NZ by the end of Sunday and Monday/Tuesday.
The rough weather may impact flights in both nations (especially turbo-prop planes and smaller airports) with some highways impacted too.
In Nelson more rain is coming from Sunday to Tuesday - which may lead to further pockets of flooding and slips, which may also impact highways.

- A very large low pressure system will form this Friday and Saturday and then take a few days to cross New Zealand.
As it does so it will dredge up cold Southern Ocean air over the South Island and right up along the eastern side of Australia.
Heavy rain with sub-tropical connections will be funnelled into Canterbury with early estimates suggesting as much as 200mm might fall in some parts of Canterbury. This is a significant amount and may well lead to slips and flooding. We’ll fine tune the risks zones further in our Friday video update.
Heavy snow is also on the way for the Southern Alps.
