A cooler southerly on Thursday will move into Southland while this weekend high pressure briefly moves in to northern areas - ahead of more windy westerlies coming back in again next week.

The low may also produce more snow in the mountains and ranges of both main islands (especially the upper SI and lower NI).

The main front today is crossing NZ but the windy SW changes kicks in properly on Wednesday - especially for the western North Island and Auckland.
Thursday sees windy westerlies in most regions and a degree or two milder (gales also for VIC and TAS in Australia).
Friday we get the next surge of severe gales, heavy rain and snow.

This week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, a wintry change will spread northwards with snow into Southland and heavy snow in the mountains. A dusting of snow in the North Island’s ranges and Central Plateau too.
Heavy West Coast rain is also expected.
Gales will also surge northwards on Tuesday with 100km/h gusts in Auckland, then late week 150km/h gusts possible in some exposed ranges of the lower North Island / Upper South Island.

- It’s a messy forecast ahead with cold fronts and windy westerlies dominating New Zealand’s forecast. The winds will swing mild nor’west back to colder sou’west off and on for the next week.
Generally speaking the north and east of both islands have the lowest rainfall totals while the heaviest rain will be on the West Coast.
Winds will be strong through the Southern Alps ad Cook Strait at times (especially Friday).
