Today we take a 6 day look at the weather impacting our part of the world, from the rain in the eastern North Island, to the high pressure belt over the South Island, the big rainmakers through Australia’s desert and east coast and keeping an eye on La Nina conditions slowly forming around Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

Gale force east to south east winds along with some areas of heavy rain makes up the Wednesday/Thursday forecast, especially for parts of the North Island and central NZ.
Further south high pressure is dominating.

- A powerful high pressure system will cross the South Island this week but a low around the upper North Island will also be in play - the two systems likely creating a windy easterly ‘squash zone’ mid week with possible gales. The good news is it will drive in some further wet weather for the still dry eastern North Island.
This weekend the low falls apart. The weather this week is feeling more like La Nina which encourages more easterlies, cloud and wet weather into parts of northern NZ.

- Sub-tropical and northerly winds will continue to keep most of NZ warmer than average for the rest of this week and into the weekend.
However, by Sunday a colder change arrives from Australia dropping temperatures. (This same colder change is about to move into Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart next day or so, and even up to Sydney).
A cold front moves up NZ this weekend, clearing the upper North Island later on Sunday and into Monday.
Next week a large high from the Tasman Sea area is likely to move into NZ.

NZ today is dealing with a storm out near the Chatham Islands which is brushing eastern parts of the South Island and south eastern parts of the North Island.
Australia also has a storm system moving into SA, VIC, TAS and NSW - even QLD may be impacted.

- The equinox was at 7:20 this morning and in the days and weeks ahead the days grow longer than the nights, all the way up to Dec 22.

Sprites or red sprites are large-scale electric discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky. They are usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground. They occur at an altitude of 50 to 90kms. (cloud heights don't exceed 100,000 ft!)
