- A tropical deluge is on the way for the West Coast with several hundred mm forecast, but the North Island may also get clipped by the same system later this long weekend and into next week.
The South Island is initially most exposed, mainly the West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough but Canterbury may also be affected by heavy rain and spillover rain in the waterways.
This weekend and next week rain then slides into the North Island with possibly heavy falls and flood potential too.
This is potentially one of the wettest nationwide setups NZ has seen in several months.

- A tropical low pressure zone is likely drag humid, muggy, air across NZ next week with a big jump in overnight lows.
Temperatures in the upper North Island won’t even drop below the low 20s, while the lower South Island will see overnight lows jump another 14 degrees on where they were this morning (+3 this morning vs +17C next week).
We track where the rain might go - and who might miss out.

- A tropical low has formed over Vanuatu and may become a cyclone this weekend before tracking south towards NZ. If it does become a tropical cyclone it’s likely to be short lived as it moves from north to south and into the Tasman Sea area.
High pressure will likely be exiting the NZ area next week which means this tropical rainmaker has a chance of dragging plenty of wet and very humid weather into NZ.

It’s far too early to lock in - but we show you the weekend guidance which shows a tropical storm heading southwards.
Today, Tuesday, we’re monitoring a large but weak low near the North Island of NZ. It brings with it some downpours and thunderstorms to the upper North Island over the next 24 hours, while a cooler southerly comes into some parts of the South Island.

- WeatherWatch.co.nz has compiled some of the more striking satellite imagery of the volcanic eruption in Tonga - all showing 24 hour animation loops.

The size of the eruption is enormous - and the sonic ripple you see from the epicentre not only covered the South Pacific, but the entire globe. It was detected across the UK around 14 hours later by weather stations (both private and Government).

- We have the latest on Ex-Tropical Cyclone Cody (which is still a storm) as it tracks very close to New Zealand’s North Island on Monday, churning up the sea from Northland right down to Canterbury, even Otago.
But most impacted - by the sea and by the air - will be Gisborne and East Cape and Hawke’s Bay, although eastern beaches across the North Island will see bigger waves and more dangerous rips and currents.
The slightly more eastern tracking will mean drier weather carries on for many in the North Island - great for holidaymakers but bad news for farmers, gardeners and those who rely on rain water as Cody was supposed to bring some relief to the entire upper half of the North Island and this now looks quite unlikely.
Unless there is a significant change to Cody's tracking our next video update will be on Monday morning.

- It’s the countdown to Christmas and this week kicks off with windier, hotter westerlies - but ends with cooler southerlies. The lower two thirds of NZ will be impacted most by this, whole the upper North Island has more settled weather with high pressure…but then late week a sub-tropical low moves in and may just stop short from moving in across the island.

- A spring-like pattern is returning to New Zealand from today through much of next week with severe westerly gales and heavy West Coast rain on the way. It will mean a drier, hotter, weather set up for some in the east of both main islands too.
Australia has a burst of hot weather right now with temperatures up to 45C forecast.
But all eyes are returning back to the tropics, where there is still a huge amount of tropical energy and warmth wanting to escape southwards. There are some signs that NZ may get more tropical fuelled rain after Christmas Day - it’s too early to lock in, but we discuss the possible set up for Christmas Day and beyond in the NZ and South West Pacific area.

- We have the latest on a tropical depression near the Solomons that could develop into a tropical cyclone by the end of this week or weekend and then impact New Caledonia, potentially Vanuatu and even Norfolk Island and NZ’s upper North Island.
It’s too early to lock in whether a technical “storm” or “tropical cyclone” will develop - or just simply a lazy area of low pressure - but either way computer modelling is increasingly confident of at least a tropical low pressure zone developing and tracking southwards towards the NZ area in the next 7 days. How it impacts any nations - if at all - is yet to be worked out. We expect by Friday to have more certainty.
Meanwhile, the “summer of rain” continues on for parts of eastern Australia and NZ’s West Coast with another round of heavy rain from this coming Thursday in both countries.

The tropics have the usual easterlies and showers this week but lower pressure is trying to form around Fiji, Tonga and Samoa allowing more humid/tropical weather into Fiji and shower clouds and easterlies sinking closer to NZ by the weekend.

Not everyone has severe weather but most places get some rain and/or windy conditions.
There are two cool downs - the first one more localised to the lower South Island on Saturday, the second one goes further north around Tue/Wed next week.

- Spring is all about changeable weather and the heavy rain, severe gales and temperature swings all coming up certainly lock that in! The rough weather starts on Friday and lingers until the end of next week for New Zealand as storm systems exit Australia.

- Parts of NZ will be several degrees above normal with highs in the mid to late 20s ahead of a cold change from Australia arriving this weekend - and peaking early next week.
The lower South Island, like Central Otago, will go from highs closer to 30 degrees to possibly some places not even reaching double digits by Tuesday.
A storm from Australia arrives this Sunday and Monday in the NZ area bringing more rain and wind and the colder airflow.
The colder airflow is moving over Australia today and peaks on Thursday and Friday as it tracks eastwards towards the Tasman Sea. It’s this colder change that will also fuel the low in the southern Tasman Sea to deepen into a storm over the weekend with very low air pressure (970hPa at sea).

- A series of lows will track across Australia and into NZ over the coming 5 days, with a return to the windy westerlies for New Zealand.
Before it arrives much of NZ will be warmer than average by over 8 or even over 10 degrees above normal - especially through the South Island’s interior.
A colder change is already spreading into Australia and will expand over Thursday and Friday as it heads east to Sydney - then moves into the lower South Island this weekend.
