- Stormy weather is expected across many parts of NZ this weekend thanks to deep air pressure in the Southern Ocean. South to south west winds will blast exposed regions this weekend and into the start of next week, with snow flurries to sea level in Southland and Otago (or close to it) and snow across the Central Plateau as well.
Australia is brushed by this set-up in the south-eastern corner tonight and into Friday - otherwise high pressure is growing there (and that high should reach NZ mid to late next week)

- A big south to south west blast from Antarctica is coming towards New Zealand this weekend, and will also brush the south eastern corner of Australia (before high pressure rolls in there from the west).
The stormy weather around NZ will enhance in the days ahead, peaking this weekend and Monday with a snowy and windy set-up.
The positive news is that those in the east have a much drier weather pattern following all the recent rain.

- A storm in the Southern Ocean will later this week send up gale force winds, rain and some snow into New Zealand, lasting a number of days as it churns by to our south.
The southerly flow is so large it will affect the south eastern corner of Australia too - following some heavy rain inland around Alice Springs this week.

- A week of low pressure means New Zealand and southern parts of Australia are unsettled with rain, downpours and some windy weather in the mix too.
For New Zealand sub-tropical winds for some mean it’s still warmer than average, especially in the upper North Island.
Unfortunately this set up means more heavy rain for East Cape, Gisborne and maybe into Hawke’s Bay too with at least another 100 to 150mm to fall in some places, maybe more.

- It’s the longest night of the year tonight for New Zealand & Australia with a fairly unsettled weather pattern impacting a number of populated places across both nations.
The wind and rain is being driven by a series of lows moving from west to east - with powerful highs to the north and to our east slowing them down and making them linger for days. The lows aren’t overly stormy, but interacting with the highs is making for squash zones and gales, and pockets of heavy rain.
We track the wettest and driest areas - and the general weather them over the next week.
The winter solstice is Thursday at 2:57am in New Zealand, 12:57am for the eastern side of Australia and 10:57pm tonight for Western Australia. - Sorry eastern North Island, but plenty more rain is yet to move through over the next week before we finally get a break in this stubborn weather pattern.
Despite a building El Nino the neutral pattern we’re still in means there is no main driver for our lows and highs - so it’s quite chaotic. The pattern we’re in now looks to remain for the rest of June.
Over the coming week places like East Cape, Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay may still have another 100 to 200mm of rain in the ranges - worth monitoring.

- Most parts of NZ will be warmer this week than they were last week - and with more rainfall too. A wet nor’easter around the North Island will merge with another Tasman Sea low by Thursday bringing more broken up patches of rain and showers across the country. Heaviest falls over the next 3 days will be the top half of Northland, East Cape and Gisborne and around Nelson.
In Australia high pressure and settled weather is moving into Sydney but colder nights are on the way. Generally speaking 5 to 15mm of rain or showers for a large portion of WA, SA, TAS and VIC this week.

- Programming note - we have no update on Friday, back again Monday --- We have your weekend forecast and the outlook to Wednesday next week as low pressure zones both impact New Zealand and Australia - but coupled with large and powerful high pressure zones too.
It means the weather systems across our part of the world at the moment are fairly large but slow moving.
NZ has rain coming for a number of days in the east of the North Island and north-east corner of the South Island, while Australia has a weekend of severe west to north west gales hugging the south-eastern corner of the continent.

However the high also means calm conditions, so expect morning frosts on both Wednesday and Thursday (especially Thursday morning!) - and also foggy weather too (Wouldn’t be Waikato in June without it!).
On Friday a slight northerly kicks in, turning more nor’east on Saturday and brings the risk of a few isolated showers - possibly a heavy afternoon shower (although very hit and miss across Waikato region).

- NZ has a big high rolling in this week with widespread frosts - but by this weekend northerlies and low pressure moves back in from the Tasman Sea.
The low is connected to an unsettled weather pattern dominating the southern coastal side of Australia over the coming week as storms in the Southern Ocean brush past with windy westerlies there.
The low should reach NZ in a weakened state this weekend and brings showers, isolated downpours and milder winds. Before that low arrives high pressure brings more dry weather with morning frost and fog patches in both islands.

- High pressure continues to control most of our weather, but we do have low pressure in the mix this weekend as we have a shift in conditions around New Zealand in particular. Australia is more settled with high pressure dominating most places, but Southern Ocean storms will continue the windy westerlies along southern states and TAS.
For New Zealand the slight shift in air pressure this weekend should clear out fog and low cloud that has been making it gloomy for some South Islanders this week, in particular Wanaka. A westerly flow from south Australia should reach southern NZ this weekend to help lift temperatures and push low cloud/fog away.
Next week - more variety, but leaning mostly dry. We have a warmer change at the end of the week which may bring in a few showers.

- El Niño continues to develop but the weather pattern in NZ looks to be wetter and warmer for the month of June, despite kicking off with colder airflows from the south. At least two or three low pressure zones look to cross New Zealand in the first half of June bringing variety in wind directions, temperatures and rainfall - but most places getting rain. It looks as though, generally speaking, NZ has about 60 to 200mm coming over the first half of June. June may be wetter than average again for the North Island and half of the South Island.
However, Australia’s weather pattern is increasingly looking more El Niño-like, with high pressure being fairly stubborn over the northern half of the country, and rainfall in the southern half of Australia being normal to even below normal.
Over the coming months we do expect El Niño to develop, which should encourage more high pressure in the Tasman Sea and north of NZ, and more westerlies over NZ itself. This set ...

- A colder change moves into the country on Sunday with a low engulfing NZ by King’s Birthday Monday, bringing westerlies and showers to the North Island and easterlies with rain and showers (and some snow) to the South Island. The low on Monday is likely to be centred over the middle of the country.
It will take until the end of next week to clear away - but then will be replaced by another low pressure zone from the Tasman Sea.

- Another mild week for New Zealand but this long weekend some parts of the country may get their first southerly blast as computer modelling continues to line up. Whilst not 100% locked in, weather charts for one week from now show a deep low near the South Island, a large high near Tasmania and a big southerly blast into NZ. We’ll need a couple more days to confirm this and hope to lock it in by Wednesday.
As for Australia, high pressure dominates with below 5C temperatures next couple of nights in a number of areas to the east , including inland parts of QLD. But southern states share the some windy westerly New Zealand has this week.

- There’s both an uptick in high pressure and low pressure as we enter the final days of Autumn on the meteorological calendar.
For New Zealand and Australia specifically there is certainly more high pressure coming through over the next week or two - but for NZ storms in the Southern Ocean and some low pressure in the Tasman Sea area will bring more downpours to the north and west over the coming 7 days. But after there we may see more high pressure.
Over the Southern Ocean winter is clearly building with some big storms developing closer to Antarctica - this placement often encourages more westerlies for NZ.

- NZ & Australia have high pressure this weekend, but it’s not perfectly settled with a weak southerly from Sunday to Tuesday driving in further showers across NZ. There will be large dry areas outside of this showery zone though.
Australia is mostly settled thanks to a lot of high pressure, but east to south east winds means coastal Queensland will see plenty of showers in the days ahead.
Next week, as one high departs and the next one from Australia is yet to move to in, a low pressure zone may rapidly deepen in the Tasman Sea and affect NZ with severe weather. This is not yet locked in - but it has been showing up all week in long range computer modelling and the location of this low is favourable for it to deepen and affect populated places. We’ll have more details in our Monday video.

- NZ is in the peak of the cold southerly today as it fades from Australia - and a high pressure zone from Aussie is moving in our way for Friday and the weekend.
However there will still be some lingering showers this weekend and into the start of next week, despite the high pressure zone moving in.
Australia’s weather is calmer but a weak cold front does affect the south to south east today and again earlier next week. Tonight is colder than average across much of NZ and Australia (except most of QLD, which returns to normal).
Later next week a low in the Tasman Sea may deepen into a wind and rain event bringing the chance of severe weather to NZ. It’s not yet locked in but has been showing up in public weather charts for the past few days so thought it was time to mention it

- The big southerly that just blasted the south eastern corner of Aussie is now arriving in NZ - and the next day or two will be unsettled with squally showers, gusty winds and much colder air - along with snow on the mountains and ranges.
But a powerful high pressure zone from Australia (which will make most of Australia below normal temperature-wise tonight, including as far north as tropical Darwin!) is also coming to New Zealand, bringing frosts by the end of the week and a sunnier Friday and Saturday to many parts of the country that just had a deluge.

- The warm sub-tropical air is about to be kicked eastwards and will be replaced by a colder southerly for NZ, sparking isolated thunderstorms, squalls and some heavy downpours over the next day or two.
The coldest air arrives in the South Island on Wednesday and into the North Island by Wednesday night and Thursday. This is the same southerly that is currently affecting the south east corner of Australia.
High pressure will expand across eastern and southern Australia this week - and will reach NZ on Friday and Saturday, but a few showers with another south east surge are expected in Canterbury on Sunday.

- It’s been over 10 days of above-normal temperatures and sub-tropical airflows - now a big classic Cold Front is on the way with a south to south west change behind it.
The cold air is already dominating the south eastern corner of Australia today and tomorrow - and reaches the South Island by Tuesday night and Wednesday, and the North Island over Thursday.
Temperatures drop over 10 degrees for some South Island regions.
By Friday and the weekend in comes a big high with sunnier, settled weather for many parts of both Australia and NZ - and maybe some frosts too.

- Temperatures will be several degrees above normal this weekend in parts of NZ and into the start of next week too - but a cold front is moving into Australia over the weekend with all main centres and states in the south east receiving a big temperature drop. This cold change will reach NZ around Wednesday and Thursday next week - finally putting an end to the sub-tropical flow for now.

- NZ’s humid sub-tropical airflow may be with us until next week but Australia’s cold change should sweep away our humidity by the middle to later part of next week.
In today’s video we show you the stubborn, powerful, high pressure zone east of NZ bringing all the record breaking May sub-tropical warmth to New Zealand, while the next big high pressure zone coming into Australia is doing the opposite - ushering in a colder southerly which will make it all the way up to the Gold Coast and Brisbane and beyond by early next week.
This cold change should reach thew South Island by Wednesday - then fall apart over the North Island on Thursday and Friday next week… and that’s all ahead of the next enormous high pressure zone, possibly reaching NZ by next weekend.

- The rest of this week and the weekend will be warmer than average for most if not all of New Zealand as sub-tropical air continues to flow down over us thanks to a huge high pressure zone out to our east.
This set-up remains until the start of next week bringing above average temperatures both by day and night, plus some heavy rain which is aligning with the western side of NZ (in both islands), and the top of both main islands too.
In Australia a colder southerly is coming through, mainly this weekend and ramps up further into Sydney and NSW on Monday - as NZ continues with a mild airflow.

- NZ has at least 5 or 6 more days to go with temperatures above normal and sub-tropical airflows, but a cold change next week may finally be that reminder that we’re now in May - with snow possible in the South Island ranges and a nationwide temperature drop. Until then, however, many places will be 4 to 8 degrees above normal with overnight lows in the upper North Island around the late teens this week.
Australia has a more normal set-up with temperatures closer to normal and airflows from the Southern Ocean at times.
