Description: Snow & frosts in the south, an extra-tropical storm in the north + weather for Paris for the RWC final.

It’s a busy video today as we track quite a few systems - the main feature being a new storm that will briefly form this weekend in the sub-tropics with the leftovers from Lola.

The storm will move into the upper North Island late Sunday and across Monday - but has limited energy and is not a repeat of anything like Cyclone Gabrielle. In saying that, there will likely be a few gale and heavy rain warnings issued for regions around the North Island over the coming days. We break it down for you.

Description: Cooler air along eastern Australia will work with a weak low to produce some eastern wet weather from about Sydney to Brisbane. Totals won’t be as high as everyone would like - nor is the rain widespread - but some wet weather is in the mix.

Norfolk Island is likely to get the leftovers of Lola producing some severe weather risks there for a time.

Meanwhile temperatures today and tonight are more than 8 degrees below normal for a large portion of Australia - but hotter weather returns for some in the week ahead as spring west to south-west winds continue off and on for TAS, VIC, and coastal SA.

Description: A wintry blast in the south and the leftovers of a tropical cyclone in the north will both independently produce severe weather risks for New Zealand.

The wintry blast arrives tonight and peaks on Friday morning over the South Island bringing low level snow flurries, heavy West Coast rain and gales to some places. This weekend it eases but then there is a significant frost risk for sheltered inland areas.

On Sunday a new and fairly large low pressure zone will move into the upper North Island fuelled by the leftovers of Cyclone Lola. The low itself isn’t too stormy but as it interacts with high pressure (bringing that frost risk further south) it will create a windy Squash Zone which can produce strong to damaging nor’easters with a period of heavy rain too. It’s not totally locked in but we give more clarity today on how this may shape up in the days ahead.

Description: We track the latest on Severe Tropical Cyclone Lola which was still Category 4 this morning over Vanuatu. However NZ has a wintry blast coming later Thursday and Friday which is stealing our weather news headlines here. The cold blast will bring snow to the ranges, heavy West Coast rain and snow to low levels in Southland and Otago…maybe on Dunedin’s hilltop suburbs early on Friday and into Queenstown too. It’s short lived but brings cooler air to the North Island too. Australia gets this blast first today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile as Lola falls apart over the next two days, it will merge with a small weak low near Brisbane to form a large Tasman Sea low by Sunday. This isn’t a storm - but combined with powerful high pressure east of NZ it will likely encourage some heavy rain and windy sub-tropical nor'easters for northern NZ from this Sunday to next Tuesday, while the South Island has risk of frosts in some spots following the wintry change. Talk about spring!

Description: Developing — Severe Tropical Cyclone Lola is on track to cross Vanuatu tonight with the Fiji MetService upgrading it on Tuesday morning to the highest level on the cyclone scale - Category 5. Winds are currently sustained at 210km/h and gusting 260. Even tonight if the storm eases back a little it is still likely to retain sustained winds of 177km/h and gusts over 210km/h. This is a worst case scenario for Vanuatu at this stage.

We track Lola’s path - and hopefully her short lived life towards New Caledonia and Norfolk Island.

Description: It’s a very busy video today as we track an incoming wintry blast for the lower South Island and parts of Australia, and at the other end of the screen we have a major Tropical Cyclone.

Shortly before recording the Fiji Met Service lifted the severity of Cyclone Lola to Category 5 - the highest on the level. This is a major storm for Vanuatu - and we have more details in our Pacific Islands 7 Day forecast, out today.

Meanwhile NZ has warmer weather ahead of the cold change by Thursday night and Friday. Australia (from SA to VIC and TAS) also has a cold blast coming.

Finally, a new low in the Tasman Sea (sparked by Lola’s leftovers) will bring rain to dry eastern Australia at the weekend - and maybe into the upper North Island of NZ next week.

Description: We have a number of low pressure zones, large highs and even a likely early tropical cyclone in our video forecast today.

NZ - High pressure this weekend but a low in the north means some rain will brush northern coastlines - it clears Sunday but a cooler southerly flow moves up the eastern side of NZ and the lower North Island on Sunday. Monday morning sees the chance of a frost inland for the lower South Island. Next week - more windy westerlies.

Australia - 40c+ in parts of WA, NT and inland QLD, while the south eastern states have two big lows coming with plenty of unsettled, colder, windier and wetter weather. These winds will see temperature fluctuations for NSW and ACT - with next Wednesday in the 30s. QLD is settled.

Tropics - A possible/likely tropical cyclone is expected next week in northern / central Vanuatu. At the time of recording this there was no cyclone or official warnings. There is no threat to New Zealand.

Description: It’s early days but a tropical depression has the potential to become a tropical cyclone next week near the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Even if it doesn’t technically become a cyclone with a name, it may still produce a period of very heavy rain and strong winds. Rainfall totals in northern Vanuatu over the coming week may be over 200mm as this low drops southwards and deepens early next week (Around Monday/Tuesday next week).

The South Pacific Cyclone season officially starts on November 1, although as Phil says in the video - Mother Nature doesn’t know that!

Elsewhere and Norfolk Island has low pressure and showers followed by a brief southerly. And downpours continue around Samoa and Tahiti in particular, while Fiji and Tonga lean drier.

Because there is uncertainty as to if this cyclone is a sure thing, talking about the future track gets messy. We refer to long range modelling which suggests it may track as far south as New Caledonia a...

Description: New Zealand’s first long weekend in months is looking far less windy than previous weeks have been, but there may be some wet weather in the north and south - and a few showers in the east. Despite that, it’s actually a mainly dry forecast for many places with a Sunday burst of eastern showers and a temperature drop. By Monday milder northerly winds quickly return lifting temperatures.

In Australia a low will deepen this weekend and bring heavy rain and wind around Tasmania - with cooler showers into Adelaide and Melbourne.

Description: Sub-tropical winds for northern NZ and a southerly for eastern Australia - all going around a low in the Tasman Sea and an incoming high pressure zone from Australia.

It means more unsettled weather for parts of NZ - but it won’t be as windy or stormy as it has been in recent days. Wellington and other parts of Central NZ have northerly gales today but they will ease for Wednesday.

The low in the Tasman will likely only brush northern parts of the North Island - but is one to monitor.

Another low pressure zone coming in this weekend around Tasmania and Victoria. TAS looks like it’s in the thick of it - but VIC and other mainland states are on the edge of the wet weather, but may get a little.

Description: El Nino makes spring even more spring-like - and as we go into October expect more westerly driven weather and more airflows coming from out of Australia’s desert.

The spring combination including El Nino means windy days will be windier and hotter days hotter (mostly in eastern regions). But western and southern parts of both islands are typically cloudier, cooler and sometimes wetter in an El Nino Spring.

El Nino is still building - and is not expected to peak until this coming January…meaning it will be peaking in summer and continuing on into Autumn next year. Description: A spring surge of gales is expected over the coming 24 hours in the lower NI then again nationwide this Fri/Sat.

The first set of potentially damaging winds will be over the next day in the lower North Island - mainly Wellington and southern coastal Wairarapa and the southern entrance to Cook Strait. This is due to a nearby low pressure zone.

By Friday a new low in the Southern Ocean will work with a high pressure zone in the south-eastern corner of Australia to drive in a burst of gale force westerlies up the South Island and into the North Island. Description: Over 200mm may fall in just the next 4 days for parts of the north eastern North Island on top of heavy rain moving up the South Island today. The two are connected but an area of low pressure deepening north of Bay of Plenty this weekend will add more rain into places like eastern BoP, Gisborne region and northern Hawke’s Bay.

Slips and flooding are possible in the North Island as a result of this rain - which will stall due to being trapped between two powerful highs, but being fed tropical air to keep the moisture levels up.

However next week a southerly flow dominates NZ with a colder Tuesday and Wednesday.

By the end of next week, more high pressure from out of Australia returns. With El Nino now here rain events like this usually become less common in the east - so make the most of it. Description: Despite summer heat this week in Australia colder air is spreading in across the nation over the coming days bringing a cool down and even some inland frosts around A.C.T.

Sydney will have a significant drop in daytime highs with Friday only reaching 18 degrees, a far cry from the mid to late 30s of this week.

Elsewhere and Tasmania sees some warmer air flows after a cold change today - but it’s still more unsettled than the rest of the nation.

Showers are fairly isolated to the coastal east, with Cairns perhaps the wettest of all the main Australian centres.

A few downpours on Wednesday through central Australia may spark a few thunderstorms around Coober Pedy and to the north of Adelaide.

Description: Rain is very slowly moving up NZ over the coming days, boosting rainfall totals in both islands over 100mm in some locations.

Description: Both NZ & Australia have a temperature drop with up to half a metre of snow for the tops of the Southern Alps around Queenstown over the coming days. The cooler change will spread northwards over the weekend and will also bring rain into drier parts of the North Island.

In Australia more excessive heat but the cooler change will be felt across a large portion of eastern Australia over the next day or two.

Description: Spring is throwing everything at us over the next week with snow, rain, showers and plenty of sunshine and warmth all mixed up in the NZ forecast.

Put simply, westerly gales are about to solidly set in across New Zealand with the South Island and lower half of the North Island (the Roaring Forties) most exposed. Winds may become briefly damaging / severe gale for a time inland and to the east next week - but these windy surges are moving through so expect mornings to be different to afternoons etc!

Most of the rain is on the West Coast, but Southland is getting spillover too.

Spring and El Nino have a similar weather pattern - plenty of windy westerlies. The weeks ahead look windier than previous years with gales likely to make some eastern parts of both nations warmer and windier and drier. Regions that were flooded badly by Cyclone Gabrielle are already noticing just how dry it’s becoming - and El Nino still isn’t officially even here (although an announcement is expected any day or week now).

Low pressure forms in the tropics this week around Vanuatu and New Caledonia - but it won’t spread much further afield.

Most of Australia is settled and dry this week - but Perth and southern WA is stormy thanks to a huge Southern Ocean low.
