The Far North of Queensland can expect Tropical Cyclone Jasper to make landfall later today or tonight, anywhere from about Cairns to Cooktown.
Cairns itself may well be in the firing line for some of the strongest winds and highest waves, with the highest storm surge likely to be somewhere around Cairns to Port Douglas (directly where the centre of the storm comes in).
Elsewhere it will be windy and wet - but hopefully not too problematic.
This is likely our final special update for Cyclone Jasper this week - but we have our usual 7 Day Australia outlook tomorrow/Thursday, so we'll cover the latest on Jasper there.

- It’s windy around NZ for another few days but high pressure is building in northern regions and will help encourage a warmer, sub-tropical, airflow in the days ahead for the North Island. This will boost temperatures in many northern and eastern areas from the low to mid 20s to the late 20s or even early 30s inland for eastern areas this weekend.
But the South Island is more unsettled with a couple of fronts and surges of windy weather. It’s a fairly classic El Nino set-up around NZ for the coming days.

- Cyclone Jasper is expected to make landfall around Cairns to Port Douglas on Wednesday - we break down the highest risk areas and those more likely to just get a bit of wind and rain.
The storm is gaining a bit more power today as it moves closer to Cairns and over slightly warmer waters.
Rainfall totals are significant around Cairns itself with up to half a metre of rain coming - but as we explain while this may be normal for some in the Far North the sea conditions will cause drainage issues due to storm surge and big seas. This is mostly only concern right where the storm makes landfall and within 100km of that.
It’s unclear if we’ll have another special video on Wednesday as the storm may already be basically moving in by then - but either way we’ll have an update on Wednesday even if it’s just part of our normal NZ/Australia daily weather video update.

- A colder, windiest, airflow is spreading over NZ today and Wednesday, sparking a few thunderstorms in the east and more cloud for the west. Despite the cool down, many places will be warmer by week’s end as airflows shift from exiting the Southern Ocean to instead exiting Australia and the sub-tropics. - A powerful high pressure zone in the NZ area will bring a slightly more refreshing southerly into Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and even to Fiji and Tonga… but over the days ahead easterlies kick back in further north and around Samoa to the Cook Islands a low pressure zone forms with plenty of thunderstorms and areas of rain. Basically east of Fiji is wettest, west of Fiji is driest.
In the North Pacific it’s a bit showery in Hawaii but nothing major there, meanwhile winter storms are now affecting Japan and the Pacific North-West of North America.

- Cyclone Jasper is still another day or two away from hitting Queensland more directly and rain looks like it may be the main problem as the slow moving tropical cyclone moves in.
Warmer sea conditions hugging the Northern Queensland Coastline along with the slow movement of Jasper tomorrow and Wednesday means the storm may start to deepen again. Even if it doesn’t restrengthen much Jasper looks to be a wet event with 300 to 500mm possible, depending on the precise tracking and speed, falling in just a day or two.
The Bureau of Meteorology is the official source for warnings - please follow them for local details.

- A more spring-like sou-west flow is about to kick in over NZ, usually more traditional in November but can often still flare up in December.
This means eastern areas will have warmer days - with the eastern North Island looking even drier.
Most of the rain will be on the West Coast and Fiordland.
We have a cold front today, weakening as it heads north. Another cold front this weekend. And then another one next week. All of them bring temperature drops for the lower South Island and may even see a brief dusting of snow on the Southern Alps next week.
But temperatures, generally speaking, are leaning a little above average compared to the past 40 years.

- The third South Pacific Tropical Cyclone of the early season is underway and is expected to become a Severe Category 4 storm (at least) in the coming days.
As of 8:30pm Wednesday NZDT / 5:30pm AEDT Jasper was now a Severe Category 3 Tropical Cyclone and still strengthening.
Cyclone Jasper will peak in power around Sunday and should weaken a little before landfall (based on modelling for the past few days).
The cyclone’s precise tracking and impact into Queensland isn’t yet clear - the distance where this storm could come in is almost the length of NZ! But between Cooktown and Bundaberg is the main risk, which includes both Cairns and Townsville.

- NZ’s seeing a large high roll in this Friday and Saturday, bringing with it a pulse of hotter air out of Australia’s interior. It’s short lived though, by Sunday a cold front moves into the South Island and drops temperatures by up to 10 degrees. The front will weaken as it heads north and fall apart over the South Island.
Next week sees another cold front which doesn’t look to serious - but also more powerful high pressure coming in behind it.

Wednesday, we’ll have another update on this cyclone only.
We track the storm’s path from the Solomon Islands, over the Coral Sea, and into Queensland - where exactly it will hit is still not known and may be anywhere from Cairns to Brisbane which is a large ‘cone of uncertainty’.
Across the rest of the South Pacific it’s a wetter week for Tahiti, Rarotonga and Tonga/Niue area. But drier for Fiji and Norfolk Island.

- High pressure is heading to New Zealand this Friday bringing a settled end to the week - while Queensland in Australia faces a likely a tropical cyclone later this weekend or early next week.
For NZers a shift to more westerlies in the week ahead will be good news for those in the eastern North Island sick of the rain. It should mean both a lift in drier weather and warmer weather. There will also be some parts of NZ that may well hit 30 degrees this Saturday as a pulse of hot air comes out of Australia, before NZ’s next cold front.
Meanwhile Australia is drying back out again - except Queensland now faces a direct Tropical Cyclone.

- We have NZ’s 7 day forecast + rainfall outlook, but we’re also monitoring our next tropical cyclone. The storm is forming over the Solomon Islands and will likely be a named tropical cyclone by either Tuesday or Wednesday. By Friday it will likely be a major Category 5 Tropical Cyclone in the Coral Sea, offshore from Australia.
But this storm, for now anyway, poses no risk to NZ. In fact, NZ is about to get not only an uptick in higher pressure, but also a return to westerlies - which those in the sodden eastern North Island will be very happy about.
Don’t forgot, tomorrow Tuesday we have our next 7 Day Pacific Islands update - and of course all eyes will be on this next Tropical Cyclone.

- There are 2 lows affecting the continent today and a third possible tropical cyclone worth keeping an eye on. Despite all that energy, the main focus of our 7 day forecast today is that drier weather is expanding back across Australia again.
In particular between Sydney and Brisbane a drier phase is returning after weeks of widespread downpours and thunderstorms. Heavy rain continues in the south-east until Sunday, but then also eases.
Queensland sees an uptick in thunderstorms this week.
We also track a tropical low which might become a tropical cyclone next week. It may pose some threat to Norfolk Island but for now the main risk looks to be for Queensland - but it’s not looking serious at this stage. In fact, it may be a positive if it falls apart and brings showers. Worth tracking - but nothing serious as of the time we recorded this.

- NZ is on the outer edges of high pressure for a few more days allowing a low from Australia to move in and fall apart on Sunday and Monday.
This will bring a burst of rain and wind from the west before easing next week.
There’s also a tropical low near the Solomon Islands developing which may form into our third tropical cyclone of the season next week. Currently this poses no threat at all to NZ due to high pressure also to our north. But Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Queensland should be monitoring it - and NZers should also keep an eye on it just incase that high pressure belt to the north of NZ changes (not expected to at this stage).

- El Nino peaks in December and January just in time for the hottest part of summer. Our final ClimateWatch for 2023 focuses on pattern and chaos. We can see more high pressure belts and drier areas setting in…but the chaos factor (mostly fuelled by warmer than average air and sea temperatures in many places away from NZ) means we have more chances of rain than usually would in an El Nino Summer.
For most this is a positive.
Long range data isn’t perfect at all - but the data we use is the most accurate on earth. It’s helpful at painting a general big picture of highs and lows and where they are trending - and what that means for rainfall and temperatures. For NZ we’re small in the big scheme of things we can always buck the international trend.

- Spring weather is certainly still with us as a low from Australia heads to NZ this weekend and falls apart.
The low will drop over 200mm of rain next couple of days on the coastal border of NSW and Victoria. The low will then move to NZ this weekend and will fall apart over the South Island on Sunday. This will bring a surge of windier, westerly driven weather to NZ. 100mm of rain is expected in central West Coast.
Next week some rain and showers affect Bay of Plenty and East Cape.

- Most of the Pacific Island nations have downpours and thunderstorms this week - with an area of low pressure near Samoa worth monitoring over the coming week as it drifts westwards slowly towards the Solomons and Vanuatu. Some long range modelling shows it turning into a cyclone - but nothing is expected to develop too seriously within the next 7 days. Still, it’s very much worth monitoring with 300mm of rain coming for Samoa and nearby islands. If a storm does form it will likely be in the second week of December.

- The spring weather pattern around New Zealand and Australia normally fades out over December, but at this time of year we can have strong moments of summer-like weather followed by a burst of more spring-like, colder & wetter & windier weather.
The week ahead is just that with a cooler southerly flow returning to NZ this week - only to be replaced by milder northerlies again late week or weekend.
A low from Australia could bring a SIGNIFICANT deluge to Vic/NSW coastal border with up to 200mm coming in the 3 days ahead. That same low will drift to NZ this weekend but in a much weaker state, bringing rain mostly to the West Coast.

- High pressure has dropped so south of NSW it’s allowing a vacuum of lower pressure to create daily thunderstorms and heavy showers over a large portion of Australia. Some areas may have excessive rainfall inland, especially around the NSW/QLD border. Higher elevations look to have highest totals.
There are thunderstorms in the dry west, a surge of heat for Perth, and a cool down in the south east again.

- A cold front will hack daytime highs back by several degrees to over 10 degrees from where they were over the past few days, but even if you’re in Southland it will be short lived with the risk of a frost Friday night/Saturday morning then warming up nicely under high pressure into the low 20s.
But the North Island will see a low deepening near East Cape and that will bring more wet weather into the eastern North Island - with MetService now issuing a heavy rain watch.

- If it’s been warm where you are in recent days, colder air is coming. A cold front reaches the lower South Island on Thursday PM and by Friday night it will be nationwide, bringing snow to the Southern Alps and frosts to South Island inland/higher elevation areas.

- A week of heavy downpours are on the way for dry parts of eastern Australia and while relief will again be hit and miss this is the second week full of thunderstorms and widespread showers in just the past month. El Nino tends to discourage as much rain - so right now this set up is fantastic for those who need it.
*Apologies, Phil accidentally says Mt Gambier is in Victoria...when of course it's just over the state line in south-eastern South Australia! Will make up for that next week 🙂
Of course, as we discuss, relief isn’t for everyone with some coastal areas missing the heaviest rain as it falls inland (but hopefully hits river and water catchment areas).

- There are more hints of summer coming in as the daytime temperatures around NZ continue to lift (generally speaking) and some regions are now showing signs of drying out - across both main islands.
As we go through this weekend a northern area of low pressure will move through, then is followed by high pressure.
The next week ahead isn’t so windy - and in fact from later this weekend and for the start of next week both islands will have afternoon downpours, some with thunderstorms.
There is another cold front next week in the south - but it’s weaker than previous ones. Still, it will bring another burst of showers and cooler air to the South Island.

- It may seem hard to believe but parts of NZ are now drying out - so incoming wet weather may not be a bad thing, except for the timing. A cold front reaches the lower South Island on Friday and then tracks up the country with a weak new low in the Tasman Sea this weekend. It means many southern and western areas will get some wet weather - switching around to northern and north-eastern places late weekend.
Generally speaking those in the east have lowest rainfall totals.
For now Cyclone Mal poses no threat to NZ but may fall apart near by early next week.

- A strengthening Tropical Cyclone is heading towards Fiji today and tonight and may even reach Severe Category 3 status. The latest tracking does show the centre of Mal hopefully tracking further west of Viti Levu. As our video says, it may still make a more direct hit and those in Fiji should pay very close attention to the Fiji Met Service and other weather providers across Tuesday and Wednesday.
The storm exits Fiji on Wednesday and may bring extra humidity and dangerous seas to around Tonga. Otherwise Mal should fall apart north of NZ.
Elsewhere and the tropics aren’t too active or stormy - but the Northern Hemisphere is showing signs of more life than previous months.

- Monday Evening Edit: Tropical Cyclone MAL has been named this evening. This is several hours after our video was made. The naming this evening does not mean there are any changes to the current forecast in this video.
Another busy weather week for NZ, Australia and the South Pacific with a new tropical cyclone developing today.
It was named on Monday evening by the Fiji Met Service and is the second storm of the season, which only kicked off 13 days ago on November 1st.
Fiji has a risk of a direct hit - or a close call - either way those in Fiji should be well aware of the situation with landfall (or peak severe weather) expected on Tuesday PM at this stage.
The storm then tracks towards NZ but falls apart much more than the remnants of ex-cyclone Lola did last month. For now, it poses no threat to NZ.

- The weather around NZ, Australia and the South Pacific is showing all the hallmarks of mid to late spring with frosts in the lower North Island, temperatures up to 40 degrees in Australia and a tropical depression north of Fiji worth monitoring. There’s also a storm south of the Cook Islands and well east of the Chatham Islands in no mans land.
The busy weather pattern means temperatures are especially changeable in New Zealand and Australia over the coming week.
Despite NZ’s unsettled pattern it is less intense than it was in October and weather warnings from MetService have certainly reduced compared to a month ago. Still, heavy rain and some strong winds are possible in the days ahead - and another risk of a frost tonight in some parts of NZ.

- Spring across Australia means more big temperature fluctuations and that helps spark thunderstorms. This will bring more relief to dry eastern areas, but as we point out it is very hit and miss - and a large chunk of Queensland is going to miss out on this rain.
We track who has the heat and cool (most main centres have a mixture of both) and where the bulk of the wet weather will be - and won’t be.

- A large high is moving into NZ and that means lighter winds, fewer showers but a risk of frost inland - tonight mostly for the South Island and tomorrow night for higher altitude parts of the easter North Island (eastern ranges to Central Plateau generally).
The high moves northwards and eastwards next week and that brings in a milder westerly flow for most places with rain returning to the West Coast but generally drier in the east.
Don’t forgot our Australia only forecast is also out today covering the next 7 days (which we do every Thursday now).

- As we do every Tuesday here is your 7 Day Pacific Islands forecast with a potential new tropical storm forming north of Vanuatu in the week ahead, out of a larger pool of low pressure that spills over into the North Hemisphere.
We show your in detail how this low will likely spin up a storm near Nauru and how the Solomons and Vanuatu may have plenty of rain in the coming week - but winds aren’t yet locked in.
Elsewhere tropical heat will be sliding further south with easterlies and showers - but generally not too stormy elsewhere.

- Thunderstorms and heavy showers will continue to affect inland parts of New Zealand and Australia for a couple more days, then high pressure moves over NZ for Friday and Saturday bringing much more settled weather…and a slight boost in temperatures. Sydney will be hotter by Saturday and that warmer airflow from NSW will come into parts of NZ.

- Big high pressure is headed towards NZ for the end of this week and start of the weekend but both NZ & Aussie have daily downpours continuing on, especially in the east.
They will be off and on for a few more days in NZ before high pressure clears them. However Australia looks like it will receive more hit and miss downpours over the coming week in the east - and perhaps an area of set in rain from some low pressure to the south. A great forecast for many who need rain - but perhaps not great timing for those harvesting wheat etc.

- Rain, showers and thunderstorms will help bring a wetter start to November for eastern parts of Australia - especially between Sydney and Brisbane, with spillover wet weather further south and north than that too.
The set-up for the next week is a slow one, encouraging plenty of repeat weather each day for the east.
Temperatures are again fluctuating for many in the southern half of Australia - but generally most main centres aren’t as hot or stormy as they were last week.
However excessive heat (40c+) continues along the top half - where it remains mostly dry, apart from thunderstorms through the central interior towards Alice Springs.

- Another low but this one is weaker and will fall apart over the next day or so as it moves in from the Tasman Sea bringing some rain and localised downpours. Heat plus some instability this weekend will see a few inland heavy downpours in both islands developing.
Next week isn’t too bad with west to south west winds in a number of regions… and not really under low pressure or high pressure to begin with.

- Warmer than average sea surface temperatures near Australia and north of NZ are complicating the El Nino outlook for our part of the world.
El Nino is measured at the equator and means warmer than usual sea surface conditions exist there, over towards the Americas. But marine heatwaves in the tropics directly north of NZ in October helped produced the earliest ever Southern Hemisphere Category 5 Tropical Cyclone on record... and warmer than average conditions continue along eastern Australia which may be a positive for them bringing more rain.
In fact a “broken” El Nino pattern would be very welcome in NZ by most farmers and growers who may want some drier weather to kick in - but not a major dry to kick in. The warmer than average air and sea surface conditions for this El Nino make it unlike one we have ever experienced before in our records.

- A new low is about to move into NZ but it’s fairly weak compared to the one we just had in the north (which has now entirely fallen apart) near East Cape.
Over the coming weekend we have a cooler change which will actually spark some afternoon downpours and maybe even thunderstorms.
Australia has an equally messy forecast with large dry areas but also some downpours developing - and we have some good news for parched eastern parts of Australia.

- The northern low falls apart entirely by Wednesday afternoon while a new low forms in the Tasman Sea and slowly moves in. The next low isn’t major but does bring some wet weather back to western NZ and it brings a shift back to westerly winds once it passes.
That means a colder change for the lower South Island later this week with a dusting higher up on the ranges and mountains.
Despite the wet weather this week, NZ is gradually becoming drier over the next days.
In Australia dozens of bushfires are now raging as El Nino heat and dry locks in over the continent. The good news is that some downpours are developing this week.

- More unsettled weather for NZ this week but conditions are looking to ease going into the weekend with a more traditional set up of sou’westers.A large sub-tropical low around the upper North Island has peaked in power and will bring more gales for Monday and Monday night but by Tuesday it’s weaker and by Wednesday it’s gone. But, a new low from the west comes in then - and is weaker still - but provides a bit more wet weather for this week (mainly in the west).
Australia is mostly dry - but also has gales today around Canberra and through the mountains.
