- A more changeable forecast is likely for NZ over the coming 10 days as we start to see an Autumn weather pattern shifting more nationwide. This doesn’t mean the summer weather is over, but it does mean there will be more unsettled days in the mix - which is good news if you need rain.
We break down the highs and lows over the next 10 days plus a long range rain forecast.

- As we’re doing every Friday now, here’s the latest on the upcoming wet weather for the weekend. The cold front will be heaviest in the west of both islands, especially the lower half of the South Island. But the western North Island has the chance of 20 to 40mm in some locations. The front is patchy which means it’s “hit and miss” - other may have less than 15mm.
Eastern areas of both main islands look driest with perhaps only 1 to 15mm coming over the weekend.
Next week another weak front moves into the South Island around Tuesday - but it gets pushed eastwards before it has a chance to really come into the North Island.
We also take a look at the general 7 day rainfall forecast for New Zealand.

- Ex-Tropical Cyclone Lincoln may reform into a cyclone near Western Australia over the coming week, then looks to again fall apart as it moves in anywhere on the western coastline from around Carnarvon to Perth. Either way it’s expected to bring some welcome wet weather to the region.
A big high south of Australia ushers in some cooler weather for southern states in the days ahead, but it’s a hot one today in Tassy.
We have your 7 Day Rainfall Total and we also take a look at Ceduna - as our place of the day (although our focus is on something much bigger just inland).

- A huge high covers the country for Thursday but it slides east on Friday - and slides even further east at the weekend. As it does so it allows a cold front to move up the country bringing some wet weather, which falls apart on Sunday PM/Monday AM as it moves into the upper North Island.
It’s followed by more high pressure - although a weak cold front looks to brush the lower South Island on Monday/Tuesday.

- Some cooler nights will give way to sub-tropical air again this weekend, especially in the North Island ahead of a fairly weak cold front moving up the nation.
By next week the front falls apart over northern NZ and a weak area of low pressure may form.
This brings some wet weather chances to “hit and miss” parts of both main islands - ahead of the next high pressure zone later next week.
We also look at the weather around some parts of Australia - including a low in the Coral Sea to just “keep an eye on”.

- Several low pressure centres will control the weather around the South Pacific nations in the coming week with plenty of rain around Vanuatu, parts of Fiji, Niue and the Cook Islands with potentially 100 to 300mm in some of these places. Driest places look to be Tonga and Norfolk Island. Samoa and French Polynesia have a very tropical week ahead but not as wet as the other places.
In the Northern Hemisphere Hawaii is mainly dry - despite an offshore low to the west. In Japan a cold front and a couple of low pressure zones move through, whilst the western USA (in particular normally dry southern California) has another burst of wet weather in coastal areas and snow in the mountains.

- High pressure is moving into NZ and will bring a slight dip in overnight lows before leaving our shores this weekend and ushering in hot, windy, conditions behind it. The windy weather this weekend may reach severe gale and with this air coming out of both Australia and the sub-tropics it’s going to be hotter and more humid for a number of places.
It will also drive in West Coast rain and a weak front for the North Island going into Sunday and Monday.
The next 48 hours also sees some wet weather around the north eastern North Island and a few showers in Southland with that cooler airflow.
The south-east of Australia remains just as unsettled as the south of the South Island, with cooler airflows at times off the Southern Ocean.

- We take a long range look at NZ’s weather right up to the end of this month as high pressure dominates but cold fronts are trying to move in once a week now.
There is a cold front for Monday and Tuesday trying to move up NZ, then high pressure rolls in on Wednesday and Thursday, with hotter nor’westers by Friday and Saturday.
Another cold front moves up NZ this weekend but takes until next Monday to reach northern NZ where it falls apart.

- Eastern Australia has plenty of cloudy and showery weather on the way, putting a cap on temperatures there - but that easterly flow will boost temperatures in Western Australia with some places pushing towards 50 degrees next week. Perth is in the 40s today and again at the weekend - although Friday sees a brief cool down.
SA, VIC and TAS aren’t as hot - neither is the ACT - but there will be some hot weather in the mix when the cloud and showers aren’t around.

- It’s one low pressure system after the other in the South Pacific over the coming week with some cyclone potential - but for now it’s a lot of rain coming with places like Samoa potentially getting over 300mm and parts of Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands getting plenty of low pressure and areas of rain, thunder and downpours. It’s hot and humid for everyone in this group, but easterlies between the tropics and New Zealand mean that some nations further south (like Tonga and New Caledonia) may not have non-stop tropical air.
In the Northern Hemisphere it’s mostly settled in Hawaii, stormy around Alaska and Japan has some cold fronts - but actually quite pleasant temperatures in Tokyo.

- A cold front is about to move up the South Island - but it will give up trying to reach the North Island due to so much high pressure. It’s this stubborn high pressure zone(s) that are, for the first time this summer, causing people from multiple regions to ask us “When are we next getting rain?”. Unfortunately, for many places, not much is on the way - in fact less than 5mm for many regions for the rest of this month. We have a special 15 day rainfall map to make sense of incoming wet weather. The most likely weather to “break” this dry forecast will be isolated thunderstorms or downpours.
Warm to hot weather remains around most of the North Island this week and the weekend.
It’s a bit windy through Cook Strait / coastal parts of central NZ.
Southland and Coastal Otago have Autumn like temperatures, with maximum temperatures on Thursday around 10 degrees lower than they are today Wednesday…but by Friday they bounce back up about...

- Despite a lot of high pressure coming into the NZ area for the next 10 days we still have two cold fronts on their way. One is this Thursday for the South Island and the other goes more nationwide next Monday.
However many places will be settled, sunny and hot this week thanks to high pressure smothering the nation. Even next week after Monday’s next cold front there is another enormous block of high pressure, followed by hotter north to north west winds.
Southland and Otago will see the biggest temperature drop this week, with Thursday’s maximum temperature around 10 degrees cooler than Wednesday (mid to upper 20s on Wednesday, mid teens on Thursday).
The North Island looks set to be driest, whilst West Coast looks to be wettest.
We also take a look at the tropics where the next tropical cyclone is possible around the Cook Islands this weekend - but due to high pressure in the NZ area it is not locked in.

- Temperatures will drop nationwide by the end of this weekend, but Saturday be hot in the eastern North Island. The cold front clears away quickly on Sunday and Monday with high pressure rolling in over NZ bringing traditional summer weather back for next week.
A new tropical cyclone has also formed near Vanuatu. It’s a messy system and at the time of recording this it hadn’t officially been named by the Fiji Met Service - but that has no impact on the maps or forecasts in the video. The cyclone is lower end but may directly cross Port Vila. There is still a lot of uncertainty in the tropics due to the really large low pressure zone stretching thousands of kilometres from the Coral Sea west of Vanuatu to east of Tahiti. There’s a high risk of cyclone development next week anywhere from about Fiji to Samoa.

- Temperatures in the southern half of the continent are swinging up and down this week with cooler airflows for Sydney and other eastern coastal areas. Even Brisbane, which is still hot and humid around 29 degrees, may notice the south-east airflow from the NZ area is slightly more refreshing than the airflows dragged down by recent Cyclone Kirrily.
Excessive heat continues in Perth and other parts of Western Australia as that cooler easterly from NSW and VIC heats up as it tracks westwards towards you over the desert, pushing temps into the high 30s or even low 40s.
40 degree temperatures are also expected through inland parts of NSW and QLD next week.
However a cool down arrives in the south next week. Adelaide has a high of only 26 on Tuesday whilst Melbourne’s high next Wednesday may only be 18 degrees (give or take a couple degrees).
Cairns and FNQ look much drier than recent weeks - but around Darwin thunderstorms set in next...

- The high temperatures this week across NZ will take a bit of a break over the coming days as a couple of cold fronts move in - ahead of the next two high pressure zones. These highs promise more hot, dry, summer weather - but as they move in the anticyclone airflow draws up a southerly from the Southern Ocean area - and this will help ease the heat and humidity. But it also brings in colder air for the lower South Island with another dusting of snow on the ranges Friday or Saturday.
Next week sees another big high moving in - and it should cover the entire country by Tuesday and Wednesday.
Up in the tropics - at the time we recorded this on Thursday morning in NZ - there were TWO named Tropical Cyclones, both Category 1. TC Nat and TC Osai. Neither pose a threat to NZ or a direct threat to any major centres, but those in Tahiti and the Cook Islands should be monitoring conditions closely today and next few days.

- A Tropical Cyclone is tracking eastwards towards Tahiti and French Polynesia, and whilst the cyclone is expected to be downgraded before it moves in it is likely to bring a burst of heavy rain to the main island group, before lingering over French Polynesia for a number of days.

The cyclone likely peaks today in strength wind-wise.
Dangerous seas and heavy rain will be the main threat to those in the region - with the bulk of the weather passing through south of Bora Bora over the next 24 hours, and then clearing Papeete by Thursday night (local times).
This may only be a one off update on Nat, but we’ll be tracking it closely incase anything changes and may update again on Thursday,

- The weather around NZ and Australia is quite similar over the coming with a lot of high pressure (especially south of Australia and tracking eastwards towards New Zealand). However the highs aren’t very tall from north to south - which means cold fronts from the Southern Ocean will continue to “nip at the heels” of both nations. Southland, Fiordland and Tasmania, for example, will notice this the most.
For those in Hawke’s Bay and surrounds there will be some patchy wet weather (hit and miss) in the days ahead.
But for the most part NZ is dominated by a lot of high pressure over the coming week or two, with many dry areas becoming drier.
There’s also a Tropical Cyclone today in the South Pacific named “Nat” - Cyclone Nat is heading towards Tahiti and Papeete. We have a special video about that also out today.

Many of us may imagine February has the hottest, most settled, month of the year - but NZ's location on earth (halfway between the equator and Antarctica and partially in the Roaring Forties) means every single year is different...and it's all down to the lay of air pressure at the time.

- Severe gales and a significant temperature drop are coming for New Zealand, starting this Friday and peaking on Saturday. By Sunday it’s easing and by Monday summer warmth and calm returns to NZ.

- There’s no shortage of low pressure around the South Pacific this week with yet another tropical cyclone possible in the Coral Sea area either later this weekend or a week from now. It’s not 100% locked in but modelling has been consistent showing it for days now.
Meanwhile, east of there and across the rest of the South Pacific there are at least two other low pressure zones and the monsoon trough all encouraging rain and thunderstorms here and there - but not everyone gets hit and there are some good dry spells in the mix too.
The Northern Hemisphere looks stormier towards Alaska, North America and Japan… however Honolulu and Hawaii are in more of a protective bubble with just a few showers about.

- 6:30pm NZDT / 3:30pm AEST edit: Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is now a SEVERE CATEGORY 3 CYCLONE. Please note at the time this video was recorded BoM and international modelling had it as a strong Cat 2 storm. A few km/h stronger now places KIRRILY as a "Severe" cyclone and means winds will be STRONGER than what Phil talks about in the video. The rest of the update remains the same.

Around quarter of a million people are directly in the path of Cyclone Kirrily as it aims towards the Queensland coast, with landfall likely late tonight.
The storm may be Category 2 when it makes landfall.
One positive is the storm is moving fairly quickly - limiting rainfall damage.

- It’s still the middle of summer but the weather pattern is about to become more unsettled in NZ as at least two large low pressure zones move through over the next 8 days. One will be partially sub-tropical, the other will be Southern Ocean focused.
Dry areas may still get drier and despite a surge of patchy rain and warmer/hotter winds this weekend, another cooler southerly kicks in next Monday.
But heading into February may mean more lows - with storms across the tropics and the Southern Ocean… NZ’s narrow area of high pressure may not be enough to completely protect us from severe weather.

This week’s video is a day early as we track the cyclone heading towards Queensland later on Thursday and into Friday. We cover the rest of Australia too as we focus on warmest and coolest days across the states and territories over the coming 7 days.
For Queensland the next cyclone is taking longer to be officially named but that should happen later Wednesday or at the very latest early Thursday. It’s expected to continue strengthening right up to landfall.

- A colder start to Wednesday but high pressure is crossing the country over the next day or two, bringing settled weather into the South Island and western North Island in particular. However westerly winds out of Australia do return in the days ahead pushing temperatures back up - ahead of the next cold front this weekend.
The next cold front isn’t as significant as the one we’ve just had - but it will bring in cloud, showers and patchy areas of rain over the coming weekend.
Next week, a low east of the North Island and a high west of NZ may bring in some wind and rain for a time, especially in the North Island. We’ll have more details about that in our Thursday weather video.

- In our first 7 Day Pacific update of 2024 all eyes are on Queensland, Australia as yet another cyclone moves in. At the time of recording this the tropical storm wasn’t named.
It’s likely to make landfall south of Townsville (or near there) on Thursday PM. We’ll have a SPECIAL CYCLONE VIDEO out on Wednesday afternoon for this.
Elsewhere and FIJI, TONGA, NIUE and SAMOA have plenty of thunderstorms and downpours - both the further south you are the better chances you have of a cool change out of NZ slightly dipping temps and humidity.

- Tuesday is another 30+ day for some parts of the North Island but the lower South Island may struggle to reach the teens in some places today (or even double digits higher up!) as a wintry cold front moves north. The front will drop temperatures by 12 degrees in the South Island and several degrees for the north. It will be like a giant air conditioning unit has been switched on for NZ - but as the week wears on the heat will slide back, especially during the day. Also, even if it’s cold, don’t forget that does NOT impact UV levels which remain high to extreme even if you feel cold.

- A dusting of snow and sub-zero temperatures above a few hundred metres for the South Island later on Tuesday as a dramatic cold front sweeps through and drops temperatures by over 12 degree in some places. While the cold front does move into the western side of the North Island on Tuesday it will still get up to the late 20s and low 30s for some places. Meanwhile the next Tropical Cyclone threat for Queensland is here. The new cyclone is expected to be named within 24 hours and will likely make landfall around Townsville on Thursday - however exact landfall is not yet known.

- We’re back for 2024 with our Thursday Australia-only 7 Day outlook. We’re tracking the next Tropical Cyclone forming in the Coral Sea and posing a threat to Queensland next week. We’re also monitoring the many thunderstorms and daily downpours still occurring.
Australia has mixed temperatures at the moment, some places around 40c others only in the mid teens. We track the ups and downs.

- A cold change, heavy West Coast rain and a tropical cyclone are both in the forecast next week although, for now, the cyclone is more immediately a Queensland problem.

For New Zealand the main headline will be the heat and humidity, which is pretty “full on” for some places finally easing back more from Sunday or Monday.
In fact Tuesday and Wednesday look significantly cooler in some parts of the country as the next high pressure zone moves in.
But also around this same time the next tropical cyclone of the season may be turning into a “severe” storm in the Coral Sea area. We’ll keep you posted.

- In our final video update of 2023 we take an extended 10 day look into January 2024 as NZ finally gets the weather pattern shift holidaymakers have been wanting.
However the new change to more a traditional El Nino set-up (with high pressure over the Tasman Sea and north of NZ and plenty of W to SW winds for NZ) means eastern and inland areas will start to dry up more in the coming weeks.
We also have a special 10 day rainfall map out to January 8.
NZ’s generally leaning into a much more traditional weather pattern…but eastern and south-eastern Australia is still caught under a lot more low pressure and wet weather.

- In our last Pacific-wide video update for 2023 we track the strong easterly flow from South America, over the South Pacific, over Australia and out into the Indian Ocean. North of this easterly flow lies a lot of low pressure, mostly bringing rain and thunderstorms from Samoa to Tahiti in the week ahead.
High pressure from NZ will bring a slightly less humid and slightly drier airflow into the Cook Islands, Niue and Tonga. Fiji and Vanuatu aren’t too stormy but do have some traditional weather for this time if year.
And in Norfolk Island some much needed rain is coming after a dry past few months.
In the Northern Hemisphere showers and windy easterlies for Hawaii, colder and snowier for Japan and stormy in Alaska and the Pacific North West of North America.

- We’re monitoring sub-tropical winds, warm nor’wester, high pressure and low pressure as we move towards Christmas Day.
The forecast for NZ is still not locked in but it’s fairly safe to say that rain from some weak low pressure will brush the West Coast before, potentially, weakly crossing central NZ on Christmas Day itself bringing warmth, cloud, showers, drizzle and dry areas.
We have no video on Friday - and due to the messiness of the forecast we’ll do a special Christmas Eve Video update this Sunday.

- High pressure is dominating NZ but low pressure is certainly trying to have a go at moving in. This week has windy nor’westers returning, lifting temperatures for many in the east over the coming day or two. But going into the weekend a low from the Tasman Sea may get involved, splitting two nearby high pressure zones apart and bringing some wet weather into the NZ area for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
We take a look the risks for wet weather around NZ over the coming 8 days - and remember the Christmas Day forecast is not yet locked in, we expect by Wednesday this week to have a more certain outlook for many places.
We have regular updates this week and will update Christmas and Boxing Days each day we update - but this is our last week of regular videos for 2023.

- Gales for Perth, spring-like in the south east and heavy rain in the tropics - with showers connecting it all up. That’s the 7 Day Australia forecast in a nutshell.
Generally speaking SA and VIC are much drier than they’ve been in recent weeks. NSW is also fairly dry but showers and thunderstorms bubble up in the north east and bordering into southern and central Queensland. ACT looks mostly dry but a few showers may form.
Queensland still has plenty more rain thanks to Jasper - and the leftovers are not done with the state yet, with days of rain to come and then potentially the storm reforming in a week (not locked in, but worth watching).

- It’s possible eastern NZ will reach 30 degrees this weekend - certainly the mid to late 20s are likely as nor’westers crank up from both Australia and the sub-tropics. The milder airflows are mixed in with cold fronts from the south though, bringing a truly spring-like weather pattern to the South Island and lower North Island. For northern NZ it will be more settled thanks to high pressure nearby - but may still be a bit cloudy and windy around Auckland.
Heavy rain is expected on the West Coast but minimal spillover into other regions - although the lower western North Island (Kapiti to Horowhenua) and Mt Taranaki will likely get some rain. A few showers may also affect the upper South Island for a time.
