- Downpours are going to track from The Kimberly to central Australia and then more eastwards next week as it joins a brief wintry southerly next week in the south-east.
These downpours will bring rain relief to dry inland parts of WA, NT, SA and also NSW. It’s a bit more borderline if it brings wet weather of any value into QLD and VIC. However VIC is still caught up in the westerly to south-westerly airflow bringing in showers. TAS has heavy rain on the West Coast again, but much drier in the east as those gale to severe gale westerlies continue.
Next week another wintry southerly comes in to VIC, TAS and the ACT, then slides up coastal NSW as far north as Brisbane by Friday at the end of next week.

- A massive area of high-pressure is dominating Australia's weather for the next week ahead creating stronger easterlies right across the continent and that will lift up temperatures in the west and also keep the west mostly sunny, dry and hot. However the east will remain slightly cooler with cloudier weather and a few showers.
Tasmania looks to be most at risk from heavy rain and strong winds over the next week, with the West Coast getting over 100mm of rain and damaging or severe gales possible once more around Tassie one week from today - next Thursday Sept 19. (Not locked in).

- Severe westerly gales look to ease in the south-east after damaging weather has dominated off and on for the past couple of weeks. While it is still windy at times around Tassie and Bass Strait the general forecast isn’t as severe as it was last week or the week before.
This week rain/showers are perhaps the main feature - with hit and miss spots of wet weather across all states and territories at some stage before now and Sunday. Totals for some may not be much at all, but others may get a good drink after what has been quite dry weather for a number of places in recent weeks.
This weekend some wet weather is even likely across the outback of NSW and QLD with heavier falls in the south-east of VIC but also may a couple heavier showers around the SA/VIC border this weekend.

- A major storm, Super Typhoon YAGI, is tracking towards Hainan Province and the south-western corner of China later today/Friday and overnight into Saturday.
Some good news is that Hong Kong looks likely to avoid much of the storm. But Hainan's capital Haikou, along with Leizhou Peninsula are all in the direct path of this major typhoon - some 15 million people. Deadly/destructive winds over 150mph (240km/h gusting 300km/h) as of this update.
China has already had over 1 million people displaced so far this summer due to severe weather, mainly flooding.
Later this weekend and into next week YAGI may dump flooding rains over Vietnam and near the capital Hanoi.
This will likely be our only update on YAGI but should anything wildly change we will update again.

- Big and powerful storms continue to churn south of NZ and Australia over the month ahead and coupled with highs exiting Australia it means more windy westerlies will surge off and on from Tasmania to New Zealand. This means western areas will see highest rainfall totals, especially the further south you are (ie, Westland).

- The next week or two around New Zealand are going to be dominated by westerly quarter winds that will surge off and on from lighter to stronger to gale and even severe gale. This relentless westerly flow means that western regions of both main islands will get the most amount of rain with some spillover a little further to the east and to the south.
Over on the West Coast rainfall totals may get up to 500 mm (or more) in some places from the very north to the very south of the South Island over the next 15 days - mainly in the mountains, however for those east of the Southern Alps, in coastal Canterbury, it may only be 5 to 15 mm over the next half a month.

- Freezing air from off the ice cap is likely to spread over the South Island on Monday bringing snow to low levels in Southland, Otago and Fiordland - but before that arrives the days ahead look windier and warmer with nor’westers picking up in the days ahead for many.
The cold weather arrives on Monday and Monday night - and there may even be a time snow falls to sea level (although in NZ it’s often borderline due to our relatively mild temperatures).

- Another large high pressure zone is slowly tracking towards NZ and will push away and break up the weak low pressure zone near the North Island, bringing drier skies.
Monday kicks off with a windier SW flow across NZ, but high pressure moves in properly mid week.

- There is some wet weather over the next week, mostly in the south-west corner of WA and the eastern coastal side of QLD and NSW.
SA, TAS and VIC have some chances of wet weather, it’s more hit and miss for SA and VIC but the western side of Tassie is more exposed to showery westerlies.
We focus on where the weather is changing and moving the most.

- Patchy wet weather will continue around parts of NZ on Thursday night and Friday, mostly for the North Island and clearing the upper South Island. Over the weekend this very weak low falls apart further.
But a big high (anticyclone) is coming in behind it, locking in colder air over the South Island and lower North Island and bringing frosts back for inland areas to the south.
Next week high pressure dominates - but rain is possible later next week.

- A new low is moving in - but it’s fairly weak and shouldn’t cause much in the way of severe weather risks. There will be some heavy spots of rain, but it’s not overly widespread.
Cooler air moves into the South Island and that’s ahead of high pressure, which will tilt the airflow to a milder and windier westerly for southern NZ on Sunday, and then turns more south-west for the country on Monday next week.

- More westerlies and northerly quarter winds will help lift temperatures slight across many parts of the southern half of Australia. It won’t be anything dramatic but a slight nudge upwards following quite a cold past few weeks.
Easterlies remain for Queensland bringing in coastal showers - and a few heavier downpours may form inland for NSW and perhaps Qld - otherwise many places are drier than average this week.

- High pressure is bringing mostly settled weather to NZ for Monday and Tuesday but it moves away mid to late week for a time as a weak cold front moves in.
Apart from a few western showers for the North Island and this wetter change on Weds and Thursday, most places lean drier than average over the next week.

- The winter of “big air pressure” continues around NZ with another dominant high pressure zone kicking off the first week or two of August. In fact some modelling suggests it dominates our weather for the first half of August bringing drier than usual weather to NZ.
Behind this high might be a low with sub-tropical connections, but at this early stage it’s too far out to lock in.
The general theme for AUGUST is similar to JUNE & JULY with more slow moving, and very large, highs and lows.
The neutral weather pattern we’re in looks to remain in play for the rest of 2024.

- High pressure from Australia will cross the country over the coming days, building from the south. However low pressure remains stuck around northern NZ for a few more days driving in some rain and showers and keeping things a little milder around Northland (milder for this time of year). The colder air will spread further northwards by early next week as the main area of high pressure from Australia moves in.
This high is likely to dominate much of NZ’s weather next week bringing drier than usual weather for this time of year to a number of regions.

- High pressure will expand over NZ in the coming days which means moderate to severe frosts across the South Island, and more wintry showers for the eastern side of the South Island up to about East Cape.
A low pressure zone will remain stuck for days just north of NZ bringing rain, showers (and maybe some isolated heavy falls) to the Far North and the northern end of Northland.
Frosty weather in the South Island will expand into the North Island this weekend.
By Tuesday next week colder but drier air heads into Auckland and Northland, while a slightly milder westerly kicks into the lower SI.
Overnight lows in the South Island will be anywhere from around 0 to -10C in places where people live and farm.

- Heavy snow and wintry cold rain carries on for the eastern South Island and is moving into the lower North Island and eastern North Island over the next two days - before easing as high pressure grows.
The high pressure zone that is moving in will dry the South Island skies out by Thursday bringing heavy frosts, becoming severe into the weekend. This may bring further black ice, and cause pipe/plumbing issues for some with temperatures expected to go below -5C and -7C (or lower) through the interior of the South Island.
But the North Island has a lower risk of frost this week due to more wind, cloud and rain or snow blowing through. Snow might impact the Desert Road later on Wednesday or on Thursday.
