- New Zealand has a somewhat unsettled weather pattern for the next week as we lie between both high pressure and low pressure - and this encourages plenty of westerlies into NZ, sometimes warm north-west, other times cooler south-west.
We track the cold blip coming in for Wednesday and Thursday - mostly for the South Island, along with the wet weather.
Later this week and weekend high pressure is close over the central Tasman Sea - but perhaps not close enough to shut down the westerlies for NZ, and may keep them going into next week.

- Most states get some good downpours over the coming week, but Victoria and SA look to miss out the most. Victoria’s High Country has the best chance for wet weather in the south-east.
But thunderstorms and showers (perhaps not as severe as the past 7 days) are forecast right across Australia with WA getting the most widespread wet weather of all - and the deserts there are getting more rain than populated places that normally get much more than they’ve had in recent months.

- A low from the Tasman Sea moves in to the South Island and western North Island tonight and into Friday bringing rain from the west with some heavy falls and maybe some isolated thunderstorms.
The warm (or mild) nor-east flow turns colder southerly quarter over Friday and into Saturday - then high pressure comes in behind it for Sunday (and this brings a frost risk though the South Island’s interior).
By next week the westerlies return - pushing temperatures up again.
We also take a look at an erupting volcano in Indonesia now causing flight cancellations to Bali from NZ and Australia due to the ash clouds.

Warmer winds give way to a colder/cooler southerly later on Friday in the South Island and more nationwide on Saturday.
It’s possible there will be some inland southern frosts on Sunday morning - but on Sunday high pressure covers NZ with lighter winds.
That high pressure zone shifts east on Monday and Tuesday, allowing for a westerly to return - lifting temperatures again in the east but bringing another burst of West Coast rain and showers into Southland.

- New Zealand has true spring weather over the next 7 days with 30 degrees possible today and Saturday for some in the east of both main islands, then a colder change on Sunday and Monday hacks back those temperatures and brings a dusting of snow along the Southern Alps.
Areas most likely to be in the upper 20s or even the lower 30s will be from mid Canterbury to Gisborne and that chance is on both Friday and Saturday afternoons. Western areas aren’t as hot. The top of the North Island may also be in the mid to late 20s for a time (if sunny conditions prevail where you are).
Windy nor-westers with sub-tropical connections fuels the heat initially - but lighter winds from the south make for cooler conditions with low single digit temperatures overnight for some inland parts of the South Island on Sunday and into early next week.
Later next week those warmer, windier, nor’westers return - ahead of the next Tasman Sea cold front.

- There are large areas of low pressure forming across Australia’s interior this week and these will produce a number of random downpours and severe thunderstorms. Generally speaking the heaviest downpours are more isolated, but WA and central parts of Australia (where NT, SA and WA all meet) may see 80mm or more in some locations. This may cause localised flooding and damaging hail.
We do see some thunderstorms and downpours around eastern Australia too, especially around the coastal side of NSW and Qld.
But most populated parts of Australia are fairly dry and quiet this week - we break down the weather until Sunday.

The month of November is with us and we are still seeing a spring weather pattern carrying on in the New Zealand area, bringing surges of windy Westerlies and some further rain to the western and southern sides of the south Island.
The North Island may now be entering a drying out phase - which for Hawke’s Bay means a continuation of what has already been drying out over the past month.

- More and more downpours and thunderstorms are being forecast around parts of Australia, including Queensland which has not had a lot of rain activity in recent months. The rain will form mostly in the afternoon and evenings across the northern half of the nation - and aren’t overly widespread, although the south-eastern side of Qld looks most exposed.
Showers elsewhere with long dry spells, still some windy westerlies for Tasmania too.
But those in the southern half of Australia are more exposed to spring-like temperature changes with some 10 degree swings in the coming week.

- Windy weather will surge off and on for NZ over the next several days with windiest weather in central and southern parts of the country.
A few cold fronts are coming in - with the bulk of the wet weather for the West Coast, Southland and parts of Otago - then some rain and showers into the western North Island. Lower totals for the North Island and driest in the east of both islands with all those westerlies.
High pressure briefly calms things on Sunday - ahead of severe gales possible in the lower South Island on Monday next week due to a major storm over the Southern Ocean.
TYPHOON KONG-REY
A major typhoon is approaching Taiwan and will make landfall there later on Thursday in a direct hit.
At its peak Kong-Rey will have sustained winds of 250kmh, gusting 305kmh. It is currently producing waves at sea as high as 14 metres.

- High pressure is finally returning to NZ this week bringing dry weather back to Southland, Westland and many other parts of the country.

A low near Fiji will deepen south of Tonga this week and will likely become a sub-tropical storm. Despite it tracking towards NZ current modelling suggests it may get close to the North Island but fail to get here. It is worth monitoring.

- The weather forecast for much of Australia is quite a messy one over the next week with areas of rain and heavy downpours forming across the continent in every state and territory.
Heaviest rain looks to be just north of Brisbane and around the Brisbane area and also through some central parts of Western Australia, however it's also worth noting that South Australia and Victoria and also much of New South Wales may get chances of rain or downpours this weekend and going into next week, including the outback.
There's no particular storm or large low that's dominating the weather within the next seven days but we are seeing a bit of a break in the high-pressure and that's allowing for some of these wet weather events to occur. One week from today there may well be a large rain maker moving into SA and VIC, but it’s too early to lock it in (but we show you the map).

- For all the talk in news outlets of La Niña this year we’re now in the tenth month of 2024 and long range modelling is still on the fence about it - and potentially time is running out with many long range Government forecasters picking any possible La Niña event looking short lived (if at all). We have the latest on that.
In a nutshell WeatherWatch.co.nz sees the next month ahead as generally warmer than average - but due to storms and lows still remaining active south of NZ we maintain an elevated risk of a snow or frost event this month.
The tropics aren’t too active just yet, but as we go through the month we do see a bit more low pressure forming and tropical rain and convergence zones expanding ... and that is normal as we head into the wet season for tropical parts of Australia and the tropical islands north of New Zealand - but the high pressure belt north of our country needs to clear away before we notice any change to the current NZ and Aust...

- A large low is developing along western NZ over the next day or two before falling apart this weekend. Along with the departing high pressure zone this feeds in more rain to the lower south-eastern corner of the South Island - and into a number of other regions too.
As it falls apart this week it is replaced by westerlies and showers.

- An area of weak low pressure off the coast of Brisbane Qld and Grafton NSW is driving in some heavy coastal rain.
High pressure exits Australia for NZ this weekend bringing a westerly wind back to Tassie and a burst of showers and patchy rain next week for a time in the south-east - but low rainfall totals for most parts of Qld, NSW, ACT, Vic, Tas and SA.
However WA may see some widespread heavier rain and downpours over the coming week - we break it all down for you.

- A west to south-west wind will blow over NZ this weekend, easing on Sunday night as high pressure rolls in for Monday.
Monday looks especially settled nationwide.
But over Tuesday and Wednesday that high slinks away to the east - allowing a low pressure zone and some wet weather to come in.

- Hurricane Helene is tonight going to make landfall around Florida’s Big Bend as a major tropical storm, bringing “unsurvivable conditions” due to a coastal storm surge near the centre of the hurricane up to 20 feet (6 metres). Destructive large waves are on top of that 20 foot storm surge.
At the time of recording this (6pm Thursday, ET/10am Friday NZT) Helene had sustained winds of 125mph (200kmh) and gusts to 155mph (250kmh).
The storm is very large, covering 400 miles (645km) across with tropical storm force winds.
Helene is also tracking very quickly northwards overnight tonight.
Keep up to date with official warnings from local authorities and the National Hurricane Center as tracking, maps, totals and timings may still change in the coming hours. This was a snapshot of conditions and forecasts just as severe weather was setting in and ramping up on Thursday PM Eastern Time.

- A cold front will sweep up and over New Zealand across Thursday and Friday, clearing the country on Saturday with a cooler airflow.
Heavy rain on the West Coast, lower totals for the North Island - and a southern dusting of snow on the ranges and mountains.
But high pressure isn’t finished with us - it tries to move in this weekend and then sets in better early next week, bringing drier weather and calmer winds for a time.

- High pressure is coming in for Wednesday, easing winds and showers and bringing settled weather for most of New Zealand.
It’s short lived though, with windier westerlies on Thursday ahead of a cold front moving up the South Island - and then up the North Island on Friday.
But the good news is that NZ is done with the high pressure - the next one rolls in this weekend and helps kick off the School Holidays with better weather.

- Rain relief is on the way for dry parts of NSW, the A.C.T and VIC as a large area of instability (currently over WA) drifts across the NT & SA and eastwards towards more populated centres.
The A.C.T, the Alps and Blue Mountains will all get rain, with snow for a time at highest elevations.
Elsewhere the weather isn’t too active - apologies if we’re not talking about where you live if conditions are quiet there!

- Two bursts of windier, colder and wetter weather are coming this week, with the main event on Thursday/Friday.
High pressure briefly moves in for Wednesday nationwide and then remains over the top of NZ on Thursday.
Temperatures will be up and down this week but starts milder and ends cooler - generally speaking.

- More westerlies are blowing through NZ over the weekend and into next week, bringing more wet weather to the western side of the nation. Rainfall totals increase the further south you head down the western coastline. Eastern areas are mostly dry with both northern and eastern NZ mildest.
Next week high pressure (remember that?!) rolls back in for a couple days - ahead of another cold front later next week for the country.
