- Allora’s vegetarian tasting menu isn’t an afterthought. It’s the foundation
- Date posted
- Description
- Vegetarians and vegans needn’t be left out of the fine dining experience at this restaurant, which offers a fully realized meat-free multi-course tasting menu.
At Allora, the fine-dining Italian restaurant in East Sacramento, chef Deneb Williams begins his entire process with vegetables.
“I was raised a vegetarian. My mom was a macrobiotic vegetarian my whole entire life. She still is; I only started eating meat when I started working in kitchens,” he said. “I do enjoy a steak every once in a while, but my passion for food is 100% about vegetables.”
Allora offers three-, four- and five-course tasting menus ($99-$159) in its serene dining room. Rather than just having one vegetarian or vegan dish per course, Allora’s vegetarian menu is as fully realized as its ominvore counterpart, with multiple options to choose from — not just the requisite mushroom risotto.

- Placer sheriff’s detectives arrest suspect in 1991 murder of kidnapped mother
- Date posted

- Description
- Cinthia “Cindi” Wanner was cleaning her sister’s Placer County home 34 years ago when someone kidnapped her, taking the 36-year-old mother and leaving behind her 11-month-old daughter in a high chair where she was found later crying and alone.
Wanner was sexually assaulted and left to die among trees in the Foresthill area, where her body was found more than two weeks later.
The investigation into her murder went unsolved without any arrests for more than three decades until earlier this year, when authorities used DNA to identify a suspect. Last week, a crime analyst in Arizona used facial recognition technology to help investigators find the man believed to have killed Wanner.
James Lawhead Jr., 64, was arrested on suspicion of homicide in Wanner’s November 1991 disappearance and subsequent death, Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo announced on April 27 at a news conference in Auburn. He said investigators arrested Lawhead in the drivewa...

- Telework remains energizing force for CA state workers as July deadline looms
- Date posted
- Description
- Two years and two weeks have passed since Gov. Gavin Newsom issued his first return-to-office order, which directed state employees to begin working from government offices two days a week. Newsom upped the in-office requirement to four days last year, but subsequently postponed that mandate after facing steep push-back from state employees and labor groups. In the intervening time, unions have filed lawsuits, lawmakers have introduced legislation and state workers have continued rallying, all to push back against the governor’s mandate.
On April 22, the state workers again vocalized their opposition to the governor’s telework policy during a march from the Capitol grounds to the headquarters of the California Department of Human Resources, leaders of which met with SEIU Local 1000’s bargaining team to begin negotiations for a new contract.

The current Mother at 2319 K St. in midtown is actually its second incarnation. The original Mother opened in 2014 on the K Street Mall, and became a much-beloved institution. It closed in 2020, shortly before the pandemic lockdown.
Chef Mike Thiemann’s friend Robb Venditti was a fan of the restaurant, and after its closure the two began talking over games of tennis about bringing Mother back. When Venditti sold his catering company, it left him the money to reboot Mother.

- Maria Raine, the mother of the 16-year-old Orange County teen who killed himself last year after discussing his suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT, is appealing to California lawmakers to place additional regulations on AI “companion” chatbots.
Raine, who filed suit against ChatGPT creator OpenAI in August, came to Sacramento to support two pieces of AI companion chatbot legislation lawmakers are putting forward. Senate Bill 1119 and Assembly Bill 2023 would require chatbot creators to make their products safer for children through design changes, parental notifications, and regular audits. The bills face broad industry opposition, and their movement through the California Capitol will likely be seen as a litmus test for whether states can reign in AI companies. The federal government has signaled it is not interested in putting regulations on the technology, but will not challenge states that do so in the name of child safety.

- The man who shot and killed former public radio executive Charles Starzynski during a daylight robbery outside an East Sacramento tennis club in 2022 will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder, a Sacramento Superior Court judge ruled on April 10.
DeSean Leon Brasser Jr., shot Staryzynski at close range Oct. 20, 2022, as he reached into the trunk of his car outside the Sutter Lawn Tennis Club in East Sacramento. Sacramento County prosecutors said Brasser tracked the man from a bank’s automatic teller to the club at 39th and N streets, where he snatched a cash bag and shot Starzynski in the head.

- Do college certificate programs pay off? California must find out | Analysis
- Date posted

- When California’s free online community college, Calbright, announced a new partnership with Western Governors University in January, the message was simple: Working adults who start with a certificate could turn that training into a bachelor’s degree and a better-paying career.
Under the partnership, Californians who earn workforce-aligned certificates at Calbright could apply them toward WGU degrees in technology, health care and other fields.
For adults whose education was interrupted by work, caregiving or financial barriers, the collaboration offers a ladder back into higher education that California needs. Too many working adults start training programs, then stall before achieving degrees that unlock higher pay. But the announcement also raised a question California struggles to answer: Do these certificate programs actually lead to higher wages?

- Description
- The light snow flurries in the Tahoe area this week after a spell of record-setting March heatwaves across California were not enough to reverse the damage.
California’s water officials gathered at Philips Station near Lake Tahoe on April 1 to measure what is typically the winter’s peak snowpack. Instead, they found only thin, patchy snow and no measurable snow, marking the second-lowest April 1 snowpack in 75 years.
At the Phillips Station snow survey site, much of the field had been reduced to wet, matted grass. From the remaining patchy snow, the Department of Water Resources officials were not able to obtain any measurable snowpack using their survey pole. The devastating final snow survey of the season at Phillips Station aligned with a broader snow drought trend across the state, with the statewide snowpack remaining far below average at 18%.

She is just one of many serial litigants filing lawsuits over alleged violations like inaccessible seating or bathrooms that are too small.
Critics say lawyers who file these cases are taking advantage of a well-intentioned law and that California’s legal landscape has made it a hotbed for “predatory” ADA lawsuits.
Disability rights advocates say there’s no excuse for not following the federal mandate 35 years after its passage and that these lawsuits identify real harms.
Two competing efforts in the California Legislature are aiming to inoculate businesses against having to immediately pay damages, but both face a steep road to passage.

- Description
- The band Cake hosted a concert Sunday in Sacramento, the city where the alternative rock group formed, to fundraise in support of city Councilmember Mai Vang’s bid for California’s 7th Congressional District.
Vang is running against longtime incumbent Rep. Doris Matsui to represent Sacramento, south Sacramento and parts of Elk Grove, El Dorado Hills, Placerville, Lodi and Galt.
“I’m so excited just to be part of this and so proud to have the support of a band that sings truth to power,” said Vang, who was elected to the Sacramento City Council in 2020 and was the first Asian American woman on the council. “This is about supporting a progressive movement across our country, East Coast, West Coast, because it’s time for change.”

- Sacramento slice shops serve up a world of pizza. Find the style for you

- Description
- Sacramentans know Zelda’s Original Gourmet Pizza is the hottest place to get an authentic Chicago deep dish pie.
Founder Zelda Breslin launched her shop in 1978, after gaining culinary pizza training at a Chicago pizzeria. In 2024, her family sold the restaurant to Jon Stevenson and Beau Cornell, who have been running the still-popular shop for just over a year.
Stevenson and Cornell believe Breslin was one of the first people to bring deep dish to the Sacramento region, and possibly the entire state of California. “It’s strangely a divisive pizza, because people have very personal tastes about what pizza is, what it should be,” Cornell said. “It’s like a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing, but the people who love it are rad.”

The work stoppage meant that 25,000 students across 49 schools in Sacramento, North Highlands and Rio Linda went without their regular teachers. Union leaders say they are fighting for improved compensation, fully paid employer healthcare and smaller class sizes.
Thursday was a momentous day for the district, with teachers demonstrating at campuses, the district calling for a return to negotiations for union leaders and parents trying to determine whether to send their children to school as substitutes handled classroom duties.
