- Description
- One woman filed 47 lawsuits against small businesses and eateries in Sacramento since March 2023. She alleges the businesses have violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, a 1990 civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities.
She is just one of many serial litigants filing lawsuits over alleged violations like inaccessible seating or bathrooms that are too small.
Critics say lawyers who file these cases are taking advantage of a well-intentioned law and that California’s legal landscape has made it a hotbed for “predatory” ADA lawsuits.
Disability rights advocates say there’s no excuse for not following the federal mandate 35 years after its passage and that these lawsuits identify real harms.
Two competing efforts in the California Legislature are aiming to inoculate businesses against having to immediately pay damages, but both face a steep road to passage.

- An emotional reunion unfolded outside the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing on March 30 as Maria de Jesus Estrada Juarez, who has DACA status, was reunited with her daughter, Damaris Bello, seconds after Estrada Juarez returned to the U.S. on humanitarian parole.
Forty days earlier, Bello had watched immigration agents arrest her mother at a routine green card appointment in downtown Sacramento. Estrada Juarez was deported to Mexico by the next morning.
What followed was a weekslong, nationwide effort to bring back the 42-year-old mother, whose removal sparked outcry from federal, state and local officials, including in testimony at a U.S. Senate congressional hearing.
Last week, following a federal lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, a judge ordered the U.S. government to return Estrada Juarez in seven days.
On Monday, the deadline, Immigration and Customs Enforcement finally granted her permission to reenter. The m...

Stevenson and Cornell believe Breslin was one of the first people to bring deep dish to the Sacramento region, and possibly the entire state of California. “It’s strangely a divisive pizza, because people have very personal tastes about what pizza is, what it should be,” Cornell said. “It’s like a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing, but the people who love it are rad.”

Jurors in July convicted Daniel Serafini, 51, of first-degree murder in the death of his father-in-law, Gary Spohr, 70, and found the former pitcher guilty of attempted murder in the shootings that severely wounded his mother-in-law, Wendy Wood, 68.
Serafini reportedly hated his wife’s wealthy parents, Placer prosecutors said, telling friends that he would offer $20,000 to whoever would carry out their killings. Ultimately, Serafini took the task into his own hands.

- 102-year-old Jim Tanimoto is the last living member of a group known as the Block 42 resisters, a collection of Japanese Americans who refused to answer questions on a “loyalty questionnaire” that implied they, while incarcerated, had maintained allegiance to Japan.
That was 1943, near the peak of World War II and partway through the forced confinement of nearly 120,000 people of Japanese descent, the majority of whom were American citizens.
Their refusal to affirm what those questions asked of them resulted in their transfer to a separate nearby facility called Camp Tule Lake — the most populated and, by many historical accounts, the harshest of the internment camps — and earned them the moniker “no-no boys,” for their responses to those two loyalty questions.

- Description
- Caltrans’ District 3 Regional Transportation Management Center monitors hundreds of traffic cameras and real-time data to help keep travelers and freight moving safely and efficiently across Northern California’s state highway system. They also help manage traffic meters on California highway onramps.
The meters are intended to control the flow of traffic onto state highways to diminish slowdowns and collisions, said Nick Liccardo, a senior transportation engineer with the state Department of Transportation.

- Description
- Mental health crisis centers, which formerly received calls directed from the national suicide hotline, now answer calls, chats and texts sent to 988, a nationwide suicide and crisis line that is available 24/7 to those in emotional distress. The easy-to-remember number has seen a significant uptick in use over the last five years, alleviating some of the need for police, fire and other emergency services to respond to mental health crises.
Chief Operating Officer Christie Gonzales of WellSpace Health explains the difference between calling the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and 911, and why it’s important to know the difference.

- How a Sacramento woman’s grandad made it possible for Trump to threaten Greenland

- Description
- When President Trump threatened to annex Greenland last month, a woman in Sacramento thought of her grandfather, whose audacious move 85 years ago inadvertently opened the door to U.S. aggression that startled her and the world.
The first time Bettina Redway really felt her grandfather Henrik Kauffman’s shadow fall across the present, it wasn’t in an archive or a classroom. It was in the headlines. Greenland. Again.
For most of her life, Greenland had been a strange family word — half legend, half footnote. It floated through conversations the way old wars do in families that survived them: enormous, settled, safely in the past. The largest island in the world, nestled between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, Greenland is a territory of Denmark rich in precious minerals and strategic value.
Kauffmann had been Denmark’s ambassador to the United States during World War II. He had done something bold then, so bold that even now it sounds un...

- Description
- Anthony Ferrari began selling his catch out of his truck. Now he sells to San Francisco and Sacramento restaurants, reserving a portion for direct customers which he sells to from his business in West Sacramento.
Initially Ferrari took people’s numbers and would text them individually when he brought in his catch. As the list grew to 300 people, that became untenable. They built a website so customers could sign up to be notified by text or email when the next catch will come in. Today, the alert list is approaching 7,000 customers, nearly entirely all by word of mouth.
