- In a governor's race with no clear frontrunner, dozens of outsider candidates are betting they can pull off the political upset of a lifetime.
LivingforGod AndCountry DeMott — yes, that’s his real name — doesn’t remember when exactly he decided to run for California governor. The interdenominational chaplain has no campaign to speak of in his hometown of Redding. No staff, no political party, no social media presence and no budget beyond the $10,000 personal loan he took out to help get his name on the ballot.
Still, as better-known candidates pour millions of dollars into the race, DeMott, the former owner of a Northern California pest control empire, and several dozen other low-profile gubernatorial hopefuls are betting they can defy the odds and pull off a June 2 primary day miracle. Only two candidates, regardless of party, will advance from the primary that includes 61 names.

- The largest home for sale in the coveted Sacramento suburb of Granite Bay — rising three stories and spanning 12,000 square feet — commands a hilltop perch and imbues the quiet landscape with French chateau elegance.
At 9300 Touchstone Court, first impressions say it all.
“When you come down the court and see this house — a three‑story home on the hillside — it isn’t like anything else you’ve ever seen,” listing agent Samantha Gray of eXp Realty said. “It’s not your traditional Mediterranean home, it’s not the modern farmhouse you see every day. It is truly spectacular.”
The sprawling estate — with six bedrooms, nine bathrooms — is on the market for just under $5 million. The home sits on 4.1 acres and comes with an additional 1.9-acre parcel.

- Description
- After an explosion tore through a fireworks warehouse in Esparto last July 1, killing seven workers, it prompted investigators from multiple agencies to descend on the small farming town to determine how it happened.
Cal-OSHA, the agency charged with investigating workplace safety and finding out what happened, was one of the agencies on the site. Sources familiar with the investigation said Cal-OSHA’s team was repeatedly prevented from doing its job by Cal Fire, another state agency.
According to multiple officials and emails, a unit of four arson and bomb investigators from Cal Fire’s Office of the State Fire Marshal — which regulates fireworks in California — told witnesses at times not to talk to Cal-OSHA investigators and did not provide documents vital to Cal-OSHA’s investigation.

- Assembly Bill 3074, an expansion of the California Racial Mascots Act, was passed by the Legislature in 2024 and goes into effect July 1 of this year. It bars California public schools, except those operated by an Indian tribe or that have obtained the written consent of a local tribe, from using a “derogatory Native American” term in school nicknames or mascots.
The Hiram Johnson Warriors and their use of Native American imagery throughout the Sacramento City Unified School District campus have come into the spotlight recently. The district’s trustees in a board meeting last week directed staff to initiate the process of removing offensive imagery from the campus as soon as possible.
Hiram Johnson’s principal, Garrett Kirkland, defended the Warriors name as one that students and alumni take pride in and said the large mural in the school’s gymnasium depicting a Native American man wearing a bonnet and regalia is not offensive.

- On May 5, the California Capitol's event to preview the Calaveras County Fair’s famed frog jumping competition hit its 50th year.
Frog jumping is a uniquely California sport. It grew out of a late 1800s fictional story by the author Mark Twain — one credited with launching the writer’s career. Frog jumping’s Superbowl is the Calaveras County Fair, occurring later this month. A frog is set down upon a designated jumping point and from there, winners come down to the exertion of that frog to jump and jump far. At the fair, participants are not allowed to touch their frog once it’s set on the jumping off point and rely instead on shouts, whistles or menacing leaps in the frog’s direction to make it jump.
At the Capitol, participants — which included journalists, lawmakers and members of their staffs — were allowed to poke and prod the frogs to get them to move.

Sacramento County prosecutors said Brasser tracked the man from a bank’s automatic teller to the club at 39th and N streets, where he snatched a cash bag and shot Starzynski in the head.
Alexander Asterlin, the defense attorney, said Brasser showed remorse and was ready to apologize for Starzynski’s killing, saying the murder was not planned and was committed out of panic. Brasser interrupted his attorney. “I didn’t do anything to be sorry for,” Brasser said. “I’m not a ‘sorry’ person.”

- Description
- On April 10, Yolo County prosecutors unveiled sweeping grand jury indictments charging seven men and one woman in connection with a July 1, 2025, warehouse explosion near Esparto, Calif. that killed seven people and was tied to an alleged “massive” illegal fireworks importation, manufacturing and sales operation.
Five of the men face second-degree murder charges, accusing them of being criminally responsible for the deaths of workers killed when fireworks ignited at a rural compound at County Roads 23 and 86A just days before the Fourth of July.
At a news conference in Woodland following a monthslong investigation, prosecutors described the site as a “hub of illegal fireworks,” alleging the group repurposed and sold explosives marketed across California as consumer-grade fireworks under the guise of a legal display fireworks business well known across Northern California.
The indictment — handed up 276 days after the blast and unsealed ...

- Do college certificate programs pay off? California must find out | Analysis

- Description
- When California’s free online community college, Calbright, announced a new partnership with Western Governors University in January, the message was simple: Working adults who start with a certificate could turn that training into a bachelor’s degree and a better-paying career.
Under the partnership, Californians who earn workforce-aligned certificates at Calbright could apply them toward WGU degrees in technology, health care and other fields.
For adults whose education was interrupted by work, caregiving or financial barriers, the collaboration offers a ladder back into higher education that California needs. Too many working adults start training programs, then stall before achieving degrees that unlock higher pay. But the announcement also raised a question California struggles to answer: Do these certificate programs actually lead to higher wages?

- Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, the man shot by ICE on April 7 when he allegedly weaponized his SUV while attempting to flee, was acquitted of homicide in El Salvador, his attorney said.
Documents by the Salvadorian government confirm he was accused of aggravated homicide against a man named Christopher Alexander Melgar Duran but was acquitted in 2019.
Immigration lawyer Patrick Kolasinski, who’s representing Patterson resident Hernandez and his family, held a news conference at his Modesto office Wednesday morning. The attorney said neither he nor Hernandez’s fiancee — who joined Kolasinski at the conference and was identified only as Cindy — has been allowed to talk with the man. Hernandez was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto on Tuesday for treatment, and the only report given on his condition is that he’s “stable.”

- Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot a man in Patterson, Calif. on April 7, describing him as a wanted gang member who tried to run over an officer during a traffic stop. The subject was taken to a Modesto hospital, and as of early afternoon there was no information on his condition.
A news conference by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI was held at about 3:40 p.m. and lasted three minutes. Sheriff Jeff Dirkse said that at about 6:30 a.m., dispatchers received a report from ICE about the shooting. Heflin's husband died in 2018, she takes care of an adult son with diabetes and she has her own health issues. She said she has an aortic aneurysm and blocked arteries and is reluctant to have the bypass surgery she needs.
She needs the joy her tortoise brings, but not the trouble. Slim Shady needs a new home. She will miss him dancing, which she taught him to do. She will miss him responding to her call and following her. She will just miss him.

- Scorching March heat drops California snowpack to second-lowest mark in 75 years

- Description
- The light snow flurries in the Tahoe area this week after a spell of record-setting March heatwaves across California were not enough to reverse the damage.
California’s water officials gathered at Philips Station near Lake Tahoe on April 1 to measure what is typically the winter’s peak snowpack. Instead, they found only thin, patchy snow and no measurable snow, marking the second-lowest April 1 snowpack in 75 years.
At the Phillips Station snow survey site, much of the field had been reduced to wet, matted grass. From the remaining patchy snow, the Department of Water Resources officials were not able to obtain any measurable snowpack using their survey pole. The devastating final snow survey of the season at Phillips Station aligned with a broader snow drought trend across the state, with the statewide snowpack remaining far below average at 18%.
