- A quiet mountain compound near Sugar Bowl Ski Resort has hit the market for $1.3 million, offering 22 acres of privacy along a 1,000-foot stretch of the Yuba River and an outdoor lifestyle that blends rustic charm with comfort.
In a market where many luxury buyers chase views and square footage, the Sierra Nevada property offers something harder to find: a fully off-grid retreat with river frontage, guest cabins and a luxury saloon built for entertaining.
The 3,200-square-foot residence at 10825 Lola Montez Road in Soda Springs, about 90 minutes from Sacramento via Interstate 80, includes three bedrooms and four bathrooms, but the listing describes it more like a private Sierra camp than a conventional home. The estate sits within the gated Towle Mountain community and includes three cabins, a workshop, a 1,000-square-foot apartment above a saloon and direct access to the Yuba River.

- The city of Sacramento opened a new “safe camping” site, located in the River District just north of downtown, with space for 96 tents on raised wood platforms under shade canopies. It’s missing some of the amenities offered at most of the other Sacramento shelters, such as air conditioning, heat or meals. However, the site does offer security, shade, showers, porta-potties and case managers.
“It’s not perfect,” Mayor Kevin McCarty said Tuesday during a news conference. “But I’d like to go down the street and ask if it is better than being outside. We can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
The city paid $2.5 million to construct the shelter, which is on a property the city already owned, said City Manager Maraskeshia Smith. That cost included a contract with Livermore-based G&G Builders. The city is also paying $1.2 million annually to contractors to run the shelter, including Santa Monica-based nonprofit Step Up on Second Street.

- A $39,000 price tag doesn’t usually buy much in California real estate. But in the heart of the San Joaquin Delta, it buys something few people can claim: an island.
The 5.6-acre private island in the tranquil waters off West Eight Mile Road, between Correia and Potato roads, has hit the market near Stockton, 48 miles south of Sacramento.
The triangular property is sparse on improvements — because there really aren’t any — but that’s part of the appeal. The land is surrounded entirely by water, making it a blank slate that’s less about a house and more about the idea of getting away from everything.
“Spend your days exploring the Delta waterways, casting a line at sunset, or simply enjoy the kind of privacy that’s becoming harder and harder to find,” the MLS description reads.

- Four mothers with young children are afraid they will be sleeping outdoors starting June 3, due to an issue that occurred when the city of Sacramento made a change to its longstanding homeless motel shelter program.
The City Motel Program, which has sheltered over 2,000 children since 2020, is being run differently as of June 1, through what is now called the Emergency Shelter Voucher program. The new program, like the last, has 200 rooms, but some of the guests will now need to pay to stay there, said Julie Hall, a city spokesperson.
According to Hall, the plan had been for all current participants to keep a room, even if they had to move motels. But as of June 2 at 5 p.m., the city was still figuring out where at least 20 families could stay. Four of those families have been living in cottages at the Arden Acres motel in North Sacramento, with children ranging from four months to 15 years old. A close community, they’ve lived there between four months an...

Unofficial ballot returns show Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra appear poised to advance to the November general election, The Sacramento Bee said. Democrat Tom Steyer is trailing the front-runners in third place.
But the race has not been called with an estimated 55% of the vote remaining to be counted. #californiapolitics #election #sacramento #politics

- Description
- Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, a comfortable frontrunner in polls ahead of the primary election on June 2, seemed relaxed as he handed out baked goods to supporters at a Planned Parenthood office in downtown Sacramento. It was his last stop in a get out the vote tour that has taken him around California.
Billionaire financier and climate activist Tom Steyer spent his final day of campaigning in Los Angeles, speaking to college Democrats at the University of California, Los Angeles in the morning and attending a West Hollywood Pride event in the evening.
The top two Democrats, who have in the last few weeks engaged in a pitched one-on-one battle against each other, continued to snipe in the final days of the race. Over the weekend, an attorney for Becerra threatened to sue Steyer’s campaign if the latter did not drop an attack ad that tied Becerra to a corruption scandal involving his former chief of staff and advisor.

- A tucked-away pocket of Lake Tahoe’s East Shore has long been the place where the shoreline turns wilder.
Granite boulders pile up like sculpture. The water is so clear you can see when it shifts from pale turquoise to deep cobalt. Here, the lake’s coves feel more like a secret than a destination.
Now, one of the area’s most elusive retreats is for sale. The property, at 2170 Highway 28 in Carson City, Nevada, is only accessible by boat, or by an unpaved private road during warmer months.
Secret Harbor, a nearly century-old, off-the-grid compound set on about two acres of grandfathered lakefront in the national forest has hit the market for $18 million.
The residence combines the kind of “Old Tahoe” setting that can’t be replicated with upgrades aimed at modern lake life: a private pier, a boathouse, two buoys, a boat lift and an automated solar system that allows the compound to operate off grid, according to marketing materials and online interview...

- “This is not the final word on election integrity.” Gov. Gavin Newsom said after signing legislation into law.

✍️ Lia Russell 🎞️ Hector Amezcua | David Caraccio
Citing Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco’s seizure of election ballots last month, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Wednesday curbing law enforcement’s access to California voter rolls ahead of next week’s gubernatorial primary. Last week, the Legislature passed a bill from Sens. Sabrina Cervantes, D-Riverside, and Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, that bans uniformed officers from inspecting election equipment, including ballots, without a court order or cooperation from local elections officials. The law makes any violation a felony punishable by up to three years in jail and a $1,000 fine and refines the attorney general’s guidance for local elections officials’ interactions with law enforcement.
