Owner Billie-Sue Mitchell walked across the park with Dennis as crowds followed along to get a selfie with the two. Joining the superheroes and dinosaurs were local vendors. Party guests also had the opportunity to color coloring pages or feed Dennis the Emu. The party culminated in a community picture with Dennis.

- A wildfire Wednesday morning has prompted a full closure on Highway 115 south of Colorado Springs.
A Colorado State Patrol spokesperson confirmed that the closure affects an area between mile markers 24 and 25, near Beaver Creek State Wildlife Area. The Colorado Department of Transportation COTrip map showed a full closure of the highway as of 10:07 a.m.
A Fort Carson spokesperson said fire crews on scene are reporting the fire may have started on the highway and traveled onto the Army base. There was no information yet available on the size of the fire.
“It’s going to be highly visible,” she said.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department and Fire Chief Randy Royal served as grand marshals for the parade in memory of Fire Captain Patrick Rogacki.
Rogacki passed last August due to an illness related to his work at Ground Zero following the September 11 terror attacks. The grand marshals also recognized the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Various floats, dances and four-legged friends made their way downtown for this longtime annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Lucky spectators were able to snag some beads and treats along the way.

- 35 teams are competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition this weekend. Each year, FIRST Robotics introduces a new game that challenges students to design and build robots for a specific purpose. The robots take the field in qualifying matches on Saturday, and teams that advance will compete in the finals on Sunday. FIRST Colorado also hosts other state programs, including FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge.
This year’s game, Rebuilt, has teams collecting balls called “fuel” and scoring points by launching them into a central hub — much like shooting a basketball into a hoop. Students control the robots during matches, while mounted cameras and an elaborate field of tags help position the robots and set their targets.
Hundreds of high school students from Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Idaho, Taiwan, and Mexico will also be working on their robots between matches and presenting to judges about their team, design, and season.

Last Saturday night, Comfort & Joy Cat Cafe hosted their first Catwalk for the Cats, a cat-themed fashion show to benefit the cafe in Colorado Springs and the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter (TCRAS) in Divide.
The cat cafe and lounge, which opened in September 2024, partners with TCRAS, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region in Pueblo and Safe Place for Pets, fostering cats and connecting the felines with their forever homes.
Local textile artist and fashion designer Autumn Olive spearheaded the cause, approaching Comfort & Joy's co-owners Carol Guinta and Sharon Mullally with the idea to produce a benefit show, Guinta said.

- Drone footage shared by the Colorado Springs Fire Department shows the moments police and firefighters rushed to rescue a man who drove into Prospect Lake Thursday evening.
The car was reportedly westbound on Airport Road when it drove into Memorial Park and then into the lake, where it became submerged in subfreezing water.
According to officials, crews arrived at the lake at 5:08 p.m., breaking the window of the vehicle to rescue the man, who was unconscious, in under two minutes.
The driver was transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Friday afternoon.
Because initial reports indicated a child might have been in the car, responders continued searching the water until it was determined no one was inside the car.

Boonzaaijer’s Dutch Bakery, 610 E. Fillmore Street, plans on making 700 of these cakes for the holiday.
King cake is made with a rich Danish dough. Cinnamon and pecans are added (making it like a coffee cake) and then it’s baked and decorated with frosting in Mardi Gras colors: purple representing justice, green representing faith and gold representing power.
Tradition holds that each person takes a piece of cake, hoping to find a plastic baby inside. The one who finds the small baby is “crowned” king or queen for the day, and that person is supposed to host the following year’s party (and supply the king cake).
If you’re not in the mood to bake your own, you can now order a king cake from Boonzaaijer’s for $15.95.

- The African-American Historical and Genealogical Society of Colorado Springs celebrated their 31st annual Black History Month Kickoff.
The event featured booths recognizing Black history and culture. Aside from the historical and genealogical booth the event had other groups in attendance such as the Front Range Buffalo Soldiers, the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center and the McAllister House Museum to name a few. The Kickoff also included a soul food luncheon and Black trivia.
This year the Black History Month Kickoff hosted the unveiling of new Black History stamps featuring author Phillis Wheatley and the Underground Railroad. Not visible at the event is a stamp of Muhammad Ali who joins the collection of stamps for this year.

The museum shop, located on the first floor, is one of just two Team USA shops in the country. Visitors can shop a variety of museum, Team USA, Olympic, and Paralympic merchandise, as well as LA28 products that were added last week.
The museum has experienced an increase in sales leading up to the Winter Games, with sales for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics collection being especially strong, according to operations manager Lori Kovacs.

- K9 Roam of the Colorado Springs Police Department has medically retired after suffering multiple stab wounds during a domestic dispute in October 2025.
Roam, a trained gun apprehension dog, required several blood transfusions and had his left hind leg amputated in response to his injuries. Officer Robert Comstock, Roam's handler, said the incident has been tough on him and his family. He did not believe Roam would survive his injuries, and every day since has “been a blessing.”
Roam will soon take on a new role as a special department ambassador, attending different events for CSPD.

- School District 49 voted 3–2 last week to suspend a policy that bars transgender students from using facilities that align with their gender identity. Proponents of the suspension say the policy, which requires students to use bathrooms based on their biological sex, violates state law.
The policy, JBAA, established clear guidelines to separate toilet, locker room and shower facilities between students of opposite sexes, regardless of gender identity. JBAA was approved by a 3-2 vote in September, and returned to the board in November.
