- The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo family celebrated a special milestone on Tuesday as its critically endangered Western lowland gorilla baby, Sully, turned one.
The zoo marked the occasion with a birthday party honoring Sully, inviting guests and staff to celebrate the little one.
Visitors had the chance to participate in a variety of activities at the birthday party, including a card-making station, a photo booth and more. The festivities continued with guests and staff singing "Happy Birthday" to the birthday boy.
Sully was born at The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo last July and was the first gorilla baby born there in 13 years. He was born to first-time dad, Goma, and third-time mom, Asha.
In his first year, he's achieved key milestones like chest beating and interacting with other members of the troop, according to Ashton Asbury, the zoo's lead animal keeper in Primate World.

Brenna spoke with three of the over sixty vendors that supply their own special touch to Circa. Among their vendors, they have stylists, vintage finders, artists and more.
Trejo says that the best part of owning the store is the community that it has created and all the love that people have for vintage in the city.

- The Project Taurus data center planning commission meeting is Thursday, and it's expected to be an all day ordeal.
With a 9 a.m. starting time, organizers believe it will wrap up around 9 p.m., with six hours dedicated to public comment, starting at around 1 p.m.
The meeting will be concluded with a vote by the commission, and those who wish to appeal the decision have 10 days to submit the appropriate paperwork.
City planners believe a final decision will hit city council's desk in early September.

An extension of the gaming store and ice cream shop in Old Colorado City, the new downtown location of Dice Guys and Ice Guys leans more heavily into the ice cream portion of the business.
Ice Guys offers 20 flavors of ice cream, with options like Tahitian vanilla and salty dog chocolate as well as eclectic creations like basil with blackberry swirl, seasonal and dairy-free selections.
All are made with natural ingredients including real sugar and flavoring, without extracts. Drinks and breakfast items are also on the menu.
The game selection at the downtown location is not as robust as it is in Old Colorado City, and the game space is a little smaller.
Still, you will find the most popular board and card games: Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Exploding Kittens, Magic the Gathering and Pokémon.

- On July 12, as hundreds of firefighters were battling the 7th-largest wildfire in Colorado history, one service member rescued one of the smallest babies in the state.
Ash the Flammulated Owl was too young to fly away when he saved from the Aspen Acres blaze, which has since surpassed 101,000-acres.
Ash is a fledgling flammulated owl, and he weighs a whopping 37 grams — just less than 2 ounces. When he arrived at the Raptor Center in Pueblo, he was taken into good hands: literally, as he fits into the palm of a hand.
The tiny youngster wasn't injured in the fire, besides maybe some smoke inhalation, Diana Miller, director of the Raptor Center at the Pueblo Nature & Discovery Center, said.
When he arrived, he was timid and exhausted.
"He's starting to get spicy, which is a good thing," Autumn Waylan, a raptor rehab specialist at the Raptor Center, said.

This is Rizuto's Ice Cream South, the newest location from a local ice cream shop that's been serving Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. It opened in the Chelton Crossing Community Hub in the area formerly occupied by Stompin’ Groundz Coffee, which shut down in January.
They have 31 flavors by the scoop, specialty treats, and a rotating flavor of the day. Gazette digital producer, Amelia Herman stopped in to try their recommended coffee ice cream. In a medium waffle cone, this totaled $7.77 (with tip!).
Soft-serve starts at just $1.25, making this one of the most budget-friendly options for ice cream in Colorado Springs.
Rizuto’s South is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 2050 Jet Wing Drive.

- This week, 1,100 cadets headed to Jacks Valley for two weeks of grueling Basic Cadet Training.
At Jacks Valley, the premier Air Force training facility in the United States, basic cadets went through a 14-obstacle course not once, but three times. The training is designed to introduce cadets to military life.
This year, cadets are being pushed harder than ever before, said Col. Sarah Brehm, after being directed to up the ante by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Basic cadets will continue their training until Acceptance Day, or A-Day, on Aug. 5. They started their 47-month journey on June 24, In-processing Day, or I-Day.
The 1,100 cadets represent all 50 states, along with 17 international appointees.

A city summer staple, organizer John O’Donnell said the parade has been canceled only when the U.S. got involved in World War II and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The parade’s latest cancellation scare occurred last month over rising costs and a funding shortfall. However, the community rallied to fill the funding gap.
The parade helps kick off the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, which starts Tuesday and will run until July 18 at the Norris Penrose Event Center.

- Four men shackled at the chest were shuffled into a GEO transport van at an unmarked immigration detention facility on Thursday in downtown Colorado Springs.
After one of the individuals was seen being arrested outside the building that houses The Gazette, a black unmarked SUV was tracked to a condominium a few blocks away at 415 E. Pikes Peak Ave., which includes the Pueblo Bank & Trust, residential units and the Department of Homeland Security, a spokesperson confirmed.
According to the spokesperson, the office is used to temporarily hold alleged undocumented immigrants before they’re transferred to another facility.
“He just wanted the American Dream,” said Inez, a 22-year-old daughter of Sergio, one of the four detainees seen leaving the building. “This is our worst nightmare.”

The identical twin brothers, of Colorado Springs, retired from the military after careers that spanned 30 years and two wars.

The family pet showed up near Cheyenne Mountain State Park to the Rock Creek fire Wednesday, escorting personnel to the blaze, the Colorado Springs Fire Department said in a social media post. Goldie was determined to help, munching on some fuel while firefighters worked to contain the 1.5 acre fire.
"We’re not saying he’s ready for a badge… but we’re also not saying he isn’t," the Fire Department said in the post.

- The Aspen Acres fire burned 2,115 acres overnight, bringing the total acreage burned to 96,031 and 15% containment as of Wednesday morning.
The fire made a surge to the northwest toward Greenwood and Wetmore Tuesday afternoon that led to a firefight that lasted several hours, according to an update from the Alaska Complex Incident Management Team. Greenwood and Wetmore are in northeast Custer County, near the Pueblo and Fremont county lines.
Fire activity started to calm later in the day once the winds shifted and light rain began to fall. Crews will monitor the area for flare-ups throughout Wednesday.
“Last night, we were really concerned (about that area), but we do feel like we’ve got dozer line around it. … That area is looking a lot better than we had yesterday,” Section Chief Brad Washa said in a Wednesday morning update.

The Sportsbook Bar & Grill features a state-of-the-art audio-visual system with dozens of massive, high-definition televisions, including a “video wall”; interior and patio seating; and an outside ordering area, offering guests a comprehensive game day atmosphere each time they enter.
Patrons can catch any sports game, Malone promises, from matches in the upcoming FIFA World Cup to NFL, MLB, NHL or NBA league games and college sports.

A Colorado Springs fire engine collided with a private transport bus at about 10 a.m. Saturday, sending nine people to the hospital and shutting down the entire block between Tejon and Bijou streets for several hours.
Four firefighters and five bus passengers were injured in the crash, Fire Department spokesperson Ashley Franco said. The extent of injuries and the cause of the crash were unknown.
As of noon, police expected the area to be closed for another three or four hours.
With lights and sirens blaring, the fire engine was responding to a possible overdose call when the collision occurred, Franco said.
The doors to the bus were pinned, so firefighters had to pry them open to get people out of the bus. The fire engine was pushed into a parked vehicle, which also sustained damage.

Everyone escaped a fire Friday that destroyed a historic home in Manitou Springs, city spokesperson Alex Riegelmann said.
Firefighters responded to the blaze around 2 a.m. at 30 Burns Road near the SunWater Spa. The home was engulfed in flames, which were spreading to nearby vegetation, Riegelmann said.
At least one person was home when the fire broke out, but everyone made it out safely. The fire threatened three nearby homes, and a damaged powerline caused other residents to be displaced, Riegelmann said.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
