In his address to the academy’s 68th graduating class, Vice President JD Vance told the 931 graduating cadets to apply the skills and character they developed over the last four years as they enter “an entirely new era of warfare.”
He recalled the Air Force’s history in American conflicts in European airspaces, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, along with the “extraordinary skill and professionalism” of its servicemen and servicewomen and its ability to adapt to innovations throughout this time.
“You are the ones to ensure that our lethality in war, which is amazing and necessary, can also coexist with our heart and our conscience,” he said. “It is an incredible burden to put on your shoulders, but it is one that we entrust to you with full confidence."

Getting there: If not paid parking in town, consider the Dillon Mobility Hub at 134 Manitou Ave. From there, the free Route 33 bus runs to the Manitou Incline; follow Ruxton Avenue down to Spring Street and the Intemann trailhead.

In court last week, a prior excessive force lawsuit surfaced alleging Foster was injured by Mork during a 2023 arrest, suffering a broken orbital bone and lasting issues including nerve damage, a traumatic brain injury and memory loss. That lawsuit was eventually dismissed.
Years later, Foster would have another encounter with police. Earlier this year, officers involved in an unrelated operation reportedly observed Foster acting suspiciously. Officers approached and pursued him, and shots were fired.
Prosecutors allege Foster — who was shot five times by second officer — initiated the gunfire.
Foster faces charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and disarming a peace officer. He is being held on a $1.1 ...

The Carson Connector is a new transit service for Fort Carson. Instead of shuttles on fixed routes, the new program is similar to a ride-share, with on-demand rides to destinations on base. Soldiers and their families can use it for free.
Riders can also get to two destinations off-base: Pikes Peak State College and the Walmart near Venetucci Boulevard.
The city of Fountain is running the program in an intergovernmental agreement with the military. Its soft launch is May 26.

- Gazette reporter Nick Smith steps in as the new host of our “Next on the Docket” series, and this week, he's breaking down the case of the man sentenced to 224 years in prison for killing a UCCS professor in her home.
On Wednesday, Ceasar Wilson, 54, received what amounts to a life sentence for the 2024 killing of Visual and Performing Arts professor Haleh Abghari during what prosecutors described as a robbery gone wrong.
Wilson’s sentencing came after a jury determined he should face enhanced punishment as a habitual offender.
Court records show Wilson has spent much of his adult life in prison and has prior felony convictions dating back to the 1990s in North Carolina, including armed burglaries.
Wilson’s attorneys, Beau Worthington and Michael Stuzynski, said Wilson plans to appeal the decision.

- The Out Loud Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus is marking 20 years of musical representation in Colorado Springs with its upcoming anniversary performance, “The House We Built.”
Led by Artistic Director Abby Carcich, the ensemble describes itself as a safe haven for the LGBTQIA+ community. The chorus is open to anyone who can sing in the tenor or bass range. Assistant Artistic Director Kai Brown has also returned for the anniversary, helping bring the performance together.
The 20th anniversary concert will take place May 8 at 7 p.m. and May 9 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave.
The program will honor past directors, feature interviews with chorus members, and highlight key musical moments from Out Loud’s two decades. The show will also include selections from “Wicked” and “K‑Pop Demon Hunters.”

- A Falcon couple discovered an unexpected guest in their home on Tuesday morning after a 250-pound black bear fell asleep in their window well.
Kristen Nedbalek and her boyfriend told The Gazette several of their neighbors stopped by to watch the bear behind the window before it was lifted through the home by three Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers and two others.
Wildlife in the Meridian Ranch area usually is limited to birds, rabbits and cats, not large mammals, the couple said. The rare phenomena prompted Nedbalek to sit near the slumbering bear for a while contemplating its larger significance.
The bear did not seem to mind as Nedbalek soon was joined by neighbors watching the “bear enclosure in your own house,” as it looked at them several times before falling asleep again.
For some reason, the bear did not want to lift itself out of the well despite having the upper body strength to do so, officers told Nedbalek.

After 51 years in business, owner and founder Richard Skorman with wife and business partner Patricia Seator passed the four-part business to couple Joe Cole and Sarah Gibeau-Cole. Skorman and Seator listed Poor Richard’s for sale in fall 2024. The couple wanted to pass the business down to someone who would maintain its ‘heart and soul’.
During the Block Party guests had at the chance to meet Cole and Gibeau-Cole. The event featured live music from Grapefruit Moon, free food and family-friendly activities.

The Brit Pub is conveniently located in the walking alley just south of Weidner Field and offers the perfect matchday atmosphere, offering pints, fish and chips, scotch eggs and so much more.
The Switchbacks battled back for a 1-1 tie against Lexington SC at Weidner Field on April 4. Lexington found the net in the 11th minute as Xavier Zengue struck and helped his team to a 1-0 lead. Although the Switchbacks matched Lexington’s three first-half shots, none were on goal and Colorado Springs didn’t manage a shot on goal until the 51st minute.

- A recent land transfer is sending signals that Buc-ee’s may be committed to building its second Colorado location at a controversial site near Monument Hill.
The property on I-25 at the northern border of unincorporated El Paso County has long been eyed for the Texas chain of travel centers known for clean bathrooms and brand merchandise. From the project’s announcement in 2024 to this year, the owner of the land has remained Monument Ridge West, LLC.
According to El Paso County records, ownership of the property changed this month. The new owner is Buc-ee’s EPCO, LLC, a company that appears to be connected with the larger Buc-ee’s company.
The land purchase is the latest in a series of legal maneuvers suggesting the company will pursue its original plan – this time without Palmer Lake’s involvement.

- The Colorado Springs Fire Department and a Colorado Parks & Wildlife team worked together Tuesday night to remove a bear from a tree on the city’s east side.
Parks & Wildlife received calls for days about a young black bear wandering through town. Three officers found the bear around 7 p.m. and chased it up a tree near Crooked Arrow Lane, near Palmer Park and Powers boulevards.
The wildlife officers tranquilized the bear, but it wedged itself into the tree branches and couldn’t be reached. A fire truck was called in to set up a ladder, which a wildlife officer climbed to secure the bear and lower it down on ropes.
The bear was tagged and stayed overnight in a Parks & Wildlife vehicle. Wildlife officer Tyson Floersheim drove it two hours southwest of the city Wednesday morning to release it into the wild.

Palmer High School’s halls are filled with memorabilia that show its 150-year history. From past yearbooks to former band uniforms, so much was on display for guests to view during the celebration. Alumni even had the chance to write notes of encouragement for current students.

- A rally was held downtown Saturday for the El Gamal family.
The Colorado Springs-area family, released from a Texas immigration facility following a federal judge’s order on Thursday, was detained again by federal agents and put on a private jet in Denver bound for Egypt, attorneys for the family said Saturday.
As of early Saturday evening, it was unclear whether Hayam El Gamal and her five children would be allowed to return to the U.S.
Federal agents took the El Gamal family, who emigrated from Egypt, to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, in early June 2025, following the arrest of Hayam El Gamal’s then-husband, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, in connection with an antisemitic attack in Boulder.
They were detained for 324 days at the immigration facility despite a decades-old federal settlement that states children are not allowed to be detained for more than 20.

For more than 30 years, Best of the Springs has surveyed Gazette readers to determine local favorites across categories including Food & Drink, Shopping and Arts & Entertainment. Over a seven-month process, readers across Colorado Springs submit nominations, vote for finalists and ultimately help determine the winners announced each April.
Hundreds excitedly gathered in anticipation of the new edition. Services and foods showcasing the best Colorado Springs has to offer were also on hand for guests to try. This year’s event featured live music from Karson with a K and WireWood Station, along with free massages, a photo booth and tarot card readings.

- As University of Colorado Colorado Springs prepares to make a series of painful budget cuts, it’s also looking ahead at its future identity and growth.
University leadership says it plans to gather public feedback on a potential rebrand toward “CU Colorado Springs,” aligning more closely with other campuses in the University of Colorado system.
Officials say the goal is to strengthen statewide recognition and support student recruitment, based on feedback from a survey conducted last year. Other campuses in the system include CU Boulder, CU Denver and CU Anschutz in Aurora.
While the university does not plan to use an acronym, CUCS, in any official capacity, some students say the informal shorthand could emerge in everyday conversation.

Leon Gessi emerged victorious after fans rallied behind the longtime pizzeria, helping them cross the finish line to take the title of Colorado Springs’ favorite pizza spot.
“It’s really nice to see all the love from the community and to see people voting for us to be the top,” said one of Leon Gessi’s general managers, Carter Jones.
The March Madness–style food bracket launched in early March with a Sweet Sixteen. Local pizza spots competed through four rounds of voting via website polls and Instagram Stories, tallying nearly 14,000 votes overall.
