- It sounds like the opening line of a joke – “A bear walks into a fire station …” – but it actually happened at Station 16 recently, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
In a video posted on social media Monday, a bear can be seen walking into the station’s bay and eventually making off with a gear bag.
Fire Department officials jokingly referred to the animal as “Smokey the Bear” but also reminded Colorado Springs residents that black bears are currently in hyperphagia, seeking to bulk up for the winter season.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials ask homeowners to be especially “bear aware” this time of year by keeping food and trash secured, taking down bird feeders, keeping pet food inside the home, and putting out trash the morning of pickup instead of the night before.
Additionally, people are discouraged from attempting to feed bears.

- One of Colorado Springs’ favorite ice cream shops has moved downtown.
The Ice Cream Lab, formerly located at 6628b Delmonico Drive, has reopened at 122 N. Tejon St.
“With us, (the ice cream) starts out as a cream and it is made right in front of you,” owner William Yeager said, adding that it freezes almost instantly because of liquid nitrogen. He estimates it is about three times creamier than fresh gelato.
The building now housing the Ice Cream Lab was previously home to Michelle Chocolatiers & Ice Cream, which operated from 1954 to 2007. It was a popular hangout in downtown, and Yeager is working on a way to honor Michelle’s legacy, he said.
“When you walk in, there’s a brick wall to the right and I’m gathering photos and anything I can find … to put together a (collage) where you can come in and see the history of Michelle’s,” he said.

- Hundreds of military aviation and history buffs gathered at the National Museum of World War II Aviation before daybreak on Thursday to witness history in the making as the only three airworthy WWII Curtiss SB2C Helldiver aircraft took to the skies over the Pikes Peak region.
Dive bombers from Fagen Fighters WWII Museum in Minnesota and the Commemorative Air Force in Texas came to the Centennial State to join Colorado Springs’ own Helldiver, whose 40-year journey from the bottom of a lake in the Pacific Northwest to the aviation museum was chronicled last year in the presentation “From Zero to Hero.”
The museum’s B-25 Mitchell “In the Mood” aircraft joined the three naval warbirds for the flight.

- After a brief pre-dawn gathering, over 40 volunteers and Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff split into teams and headed off into the high alpine.
They were on an annual mission to count and catalog the bighorn sheep population of Pikes Peak, an effort that’s been ongoing since 1988. The volunteers gathered before sunrise to take advantage of the sheep’s most active hours — usually dawn and dusk.
Ken Anderson, a longtime CPW volunteer who regularly tracks the sheep throughout the year, was a key source of information for where they might be found.
Sometimes it takes a keen eye.

Brenna decided to be a tourist in her own hometown and visit the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The Cog has been running for centuries and takes enthusiastic visitors to the peak of America's Mountain.
The venture takes around three hours round trip. While at the top, be sure to visit the Visitors Center for a peek into the history of the mountain and the events held there annually.
Do not forget to get your World Famous Pikes Peak Doughnuts. These doughnuts are made at 14,000 ft and they offer plain, cinnamon sugar, and a rotating special flavor.
Pro tip: Remember to drink plenty of water before the venture and while on top of the mountain. Outside food and beverages are not allowed, but you are allowed to bring a water bottle. This will help battle altitude sickness and keep you hydrated.

On Sunday afternoon, the arcade held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, which featured free samples, face painting, live music and more.
At the newly opened snack bar, customers can get five kinds of paninis, fresh-squeezed lemonade, smoothies and "99" ice cream cones, a vanilla cone with a Cadbury chocolate flake bar.
The roughly 200-square-foot area is based on a previous model of the snack bar, which the original arcade owners once operated in the arcade’s Skee-Ball building, according to Food and Beverage Director Carol White.

After nearly four years on Colorado Avenue, owner Clay Hapke relocated the boutique houseplant and supply shop to 101 N. Tejon St., a move he said gives the business more room to grow and a better environment for its customers and collection of indoor plants.
“I kind of became a little stagnant in Old Colorado City and wanted to try downtown,” Hapke said.
The new storefront is about twice the size of the former location and features south-facing windows, rather than north-facing. These features provide more consistent natural light, creating better growing conditions for many of the shop’s tropical houseplants. - The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo family celebrated a special milestone on Tuesday as its critically endangered Western lowland gorilla baby, Sully, turned one.
The zoo marked the occasion with a birthday party honoring Sully, inviting guests and staff to celebrate the little one.
Visitors had the chance to participate in a variety of activities at the birthday party, including a card-making station, a photo booth and more. The festivities continued with guests and staff singing "Happy Birthday" to the birthday boy.
Sully was born at The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo last July and was the first gorilla baby born there in 13 years. He was born to first-time dad, Goma, and third-time mom, Asha.
In his first year, he's achieved key milestones like chest beating and interacting with other members of the troop, according to Ashton Asbury, the zoo's lead animal keeper in Primate World.

Ice Guys offers 20 flavors of ice cream, with options like Tahitian vanilla and salty dog chocolate as well as eclectic creations like basil with blackberry swirl, seasonal and dairy-free selections.
All are made with natural ingredients including real sugar and flavoring, without extracts. Drinks and breakfast items are also on the menu.
The game selection at the downtown location is not as robust as it is in Old Colorado City, and the game space is a little smaller.

- On July 12, as hundreds of firefighters were battling the 7th-largest wildfire in Colorado history, one service member rescued one of the smallest babies in the state.
Ash the Flammulated Owl was too young to fly away when he saved from the Aspen Acres blaze, which has since surpassed 101,000-acres.
Ash is a fledgling flammulated owl, and he weighs a whopping 37 grams — just less than 2 ounces. When he arrived at the Raptor Center in Pueblo, he was taken into good hands: literally, as he fits into the palm of a hand.
The tiny youngster wasn't injured in the fire, besides maybe some smoke inhalation, Diana Miller, director of the Raptor Center at the Pueblo Nature & Discovery Center, said.

- This week, 1,100 cadets headed to Jacks Valley for two weeks of grueling Basic Cadet Training.
At Jacks Valley, the premier Air Force training facility in the United States, basic cadets went through a 14-obstacle course not once, but three times. The training is designed to introduce cadets to military life.
This year, cadets are being pushed harder than ever before, said Col. Sarah Brehm, after being directed to up the ante by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Basic cadets will continue their training until Acceptance Day, or A-Day, on Aug. 5. They started their 47-month journey on June 24, In-processing Day, or I-Day.
The 1,100 cadets represent all 50 states, along with 17 international appointees.

- Nearly two weeks after the Aspen Acres fire
exploded onto the landscape, residents are beginning
to reckon with the destruction, even as the fire burns
on.
On Saturday, the fire had charred 97,505 acres and
destroyed about 850 structures, including at least 254
homes in Pueblo County and 83 homes in Custer
County.
The fire is the seventh-largest in state history and far
more expansive than Colorado Springs’ largest fires,
Waldo Canyon and Black Forest. Waldo Canyon burned
18,247 acres and Black Forest consumed 14,000
acres.
But firefighters have made substantial progress in
recent days, with containment jumping up to 34%
Saturday from 28% on Friday.
Beulah was hit especially hard, during the first day of
the fire, which broke out June 29 and quickly grew into
a rampaging inferno.

- After overcoming a funding scare, the Pikes Peak or Bust Parade strolled through downtown Colorado Springs Saturday for its 83rd year.
A city summer staple, organizer John O’Donnell said the parade has been canceled only when the U.S. got involved in World War II and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The parade’s latest cancellation scare occurred last month over rising costs and a funding shortfall. However, the community rallied to fill the funding gap.
The parade helps kick off the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, which starts Tuesday and will run until July 18 at the Norris Penrose Event Center.

- Four men shackled at the chest were shuffled into a GEO transport van at an unmarked immigration detention facility on Thursday in downtown Colorado Springs.
After one of the individuals was seen being arrested outside the building that houses The Gazette, a black unmarked SUV was tracked to a condominium a few blocks away at 415 E. Pikes Peak Ave., which includes the Pueblo Bank & Trust, residential units and the Department of Homeland Security, a spokesperson confirmed.
According to the spokesperson, the office is used to temporarily hold alleged undocumented immigrants before they’re transferred to another facility.
“He just wanted the American Dream,” said Inez, a 22-year-old daughter of Sergio, one of the four detainees seen leaving the building. “This is our worst nightmare.”

- Richard Gibbs and his twin brother, Robert Gibbs, were at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo last month for a belated celebration of their 96th birthdays. Dozens of family members — children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom traveled to Colorado Springs from across the nation, attended.
The identical twin brothers, of Colorado Springs, retired from the military after careers that spanned 30 years and two wars.
"They're probably the two most patriotic people you'll ever meet," said Robert "Bob" Gibbs' daughter, Michele Burchfield.

- Goldie the Goat showed Colorado Springs firefighters how it's done.
The family pet showed up near Cheyenne Mountain State Park to the Rock Creek fire Wednesday, escorting personnel to the blaze, the Colorado Springs Fire Department said in a social media post. Goldie was determined to help, munching on some fuel while firefighters worked to contain the 1.5 acre fire.
"We’re not saying he’s ready for a badge… but we’re also not saying he isn’t," the Fire Department said in the post.
As of late Wednesday night, the fire is 30% contained.

- The Aspen Acres fire burned 2,115 acres overnight, bringing the total acreage burned to 96,031 and 15% containment as of Wednesday morning.
The fire made a surge to the northwest toward Greenwood and Wetmore Tuesday afternoon that led to a firefight that lasted several hours, according to an update from the Alaska Complex Incident Management Team. Greenwood and Wetmore are in northeast Custer County, near the Pueblo and Fremont county lines.
Fire activity started to calm later in the day once the winds shifted and light rain began to fall. Crews will monitor the area for flare-ups throughout Wednesday.
“Last night, we were really concerned (about that area), but we do feel like we’ve got dozer line around it. … That area is looking a lot better than we had yesterday,” Section Chief Brad Washa said in a Wednesday morning update.

Gasoline Alley, located at 28 N. Tejon Street, is a staple in Colorado Springs nightlife, but their menu doesn’t get enough attention. I call it “elevated bar food.”
We tried their Philly cheesesteak (the Rebel) and barbeque bacon burger (the Southern Rock Burger), with sides of buffalo and garlic fries, and were beyond impressed.
Gasoline Alley is open every night until 2 a.m. and makes for a great cheap lunch spot or a late night eat, which Colorado Springs often lacks. For both meals, we paid $31.
