- The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo celebrated a milestone Tuesday with the grand opening of its new giraffe center.
The new International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe, a 12,000-square-foot giraffe barn and renovated and expanded giraffe yard, offers new ways for guests to interact with the iconic herd.
The grand opening gave guests a chance to explore the new habitat and featured free interactive and educational activities, as well as remarks from the zoo’s president and CEO, Dave Ruhl.
“This new space gives giraffe more choice about where to stand, where to rest, who to be near and where to engage with our guests. Choice matters because it gives animals even more control over their own lives,” Ruhl said.

- The Project Taurus data center meeting ground to a stunned halt after an audience member was hit with a stun gun and escorted from the building by Colorado Springs police officers Thursday.
The man who got into a fight with the police officers had attempted to get between them and a woman holding a portable megaphone. The woman had signed up to give comment but when her turn in the order was skipped, she returned to the mic to ask for another time.
Council staff refused to go backwards to previous places in the list, leading to a shower of boos from the audience and a break called by Council President Lynette Crow-Iverson. It was during the meeting that security approached her to be removed and the altercation began.
The woman was not removed from the auditorium. The identity of the man who was hit with the stun gun and removed has not been confirmed at this time.

The homer gave Torres her fourth of the season — she had none as a freshman — and her four hits marked the fifth time through 12 contests the Fountain-Fort Carson sophomore had three or more hits in a game.
This year, Torres is batting .561, has 23 hits, 20 RBIs and eight doubles. In the circle, Torres has collected five wins along with 39 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings pitched.
“I worked a lot over the summer during club and preparing for high school just to find my pitch and be able to hit the ball hard,” Torres said.

Brenna ventured out for breakfast and tried their bananas foster latte, stuffed strawberry French toast and barbeque waffle.

A mix of family fun and healthy competition, the teams competed with part of the proceeds going to the debra of America charity. debra is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), according to their website.
The match has taken place since 2018 and was held before the Switchbacks 9/11 remembrance match.
The game ended in a 2-2 tie with fun and good sportsmanship felt throughout the stadium.

From Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station to Mitchell High School to the top of the Manitou Incline, the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11 were honored with music, speeches, prayer and moments of silence.
At the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Memorial Park, the community also honored a local firefighter who died last year from toxic exposure he experienced while assisting with the recovery efforts.
More than 600 firefighters have died from illnesses linked to toxic exposure at the World Trade Center site since 9/11, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters.

- Before sunrise on Friday, firefighters from across the U.S. gathered at the Manitou Incline to walk the more than 2,700 steps in honor of the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives trying to save others in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Some Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs firefighters showed up despite having just completed their shifts. Others had a shift to look forward to after the ascent.
Many were dressed in full turnout gear, making an exhausting climb even more difficult. Others had not yet been born when the attacks took place 25 years ago.
“We already have a generation of people – adults – who were either too young to remember 9/11, or weren’t even born,” said Mark Tonin, who drove in from Montana. “I’m glad some of them showed up today.”

Banks, this week’s Gazette Preps Peak Performer, ran 10 times for 222 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-6 victory against Mitchell last week.
The Sierra halfback ran well past his total yardage from his freshman year, where Banks finished with 80 yards on 35 carries. Banks, who averaged 22.2 yards per attempt against the Marauders, shook loose from the defense for a 68-yard score in the game, which surpassed his previous longest of 54 yards Aug. 29 against Alameda.
Following Banks’ performance against Mitchell, the Stallions sophomore is tied for second in the state with eight rushing touchdowns. The Stallions also own a 2-1 record and have a two-game winning streak for the first time since 2023.

- The Cucharas is not a mighty river, but the people of La Veta knew they had a problem brewing when it ran dry at the beginning of June.
“We’re getting by,” said La Veta Mayor Doug Brgoch. “It’s not great.”
There are signs all around La Veta of moisture drawing away from the land: wells are drying up, creek beds are dusty. On the outskirts of town, the Wahatoya and Daigre reservoirs, both state wildlife areas, have been drained to the dregs to send to downstream users. Stranded, dying crawfish are the only signs of life on the cracked lakebeds.
Huerfano County, which contains La Veta and much of the Cucharas River, is in an extreme to exceptional drought. 2026 is the second worst drought year the county has experienced in the last 132 years.
Neighboring counties, especially west into the San Luis Valley, are in a similar condition.

On Friday (9/4/26), the store hosted its soft opening - and the store was busy within minutes.
The store, at 327 N. Tejon St., formerly operated out of CO.A.T.I. downtown under the name Vintage and Vinyl. For two years, the couple had roughly 300 square feet of space to sell old and new records,
vintage T-shirts and other music media.
Now they have four times the space.
On North Tejon, the new shop is close to new apartments, Palmer High School and Colorado College, which the two hope will be big drivers for
sales. They say they want to create a community space for music enthusiasts, nerds and fans to gather.

When he arrived in Colorado for the first time this past winter, he was told to hate Wyoming — so he did.
On Saturday night, as over 17,000 of his new classmates came pouring onto the field at Canvas Stadium after his team’s convincing 35-13 win over the Cowboys, he finally understood why.
“I’m not really used to rivalries,” the linebacker who had 11 tackles in the game said.
He certainly is now, though, and he wants the rest of the new-look Pac-12 to know that Colorado State’s first season-opening win since 2017 was for real.
“We’re coming,” Diomande said. “We’re building something special and we won’t go down that easy.”

- The Wells Fargo Tower and FirstBank buildings, the two tallest and most prominent in Colorado Springs, have fallen into foreclosure.
The owners have an unpaid principal balance of about $59 million on a loan of $74 million, records show. It's unclear what factors contributed to the foreclosures.
Several other business suite properties, accessed via either building or the adjacent The Antlers hotel, are also in foreclosure, El Paso County Public Trustees Office records show.
The Antlers has not fallen into foreclosure.
Construction on the 250-foot-tall Wells Fargo Tower was completed in 1990. It's currently the tallest building in Colorado Springs.
The FirstBank building, completed in 1967, was the city's first high-rise development. It was known for decades as the Holly Sugar Building, serving as the headquarters for the Holly Sugar Corporation, a beet sugar refinery that operated locally from 1923 until 1997.

Flammulated owls are Colorado’s smallest species of owl. Ash was a fledgling, just around 4-6 weeks old, when he was rescued by a firefighter and taken to the Raptor Center in Pueblo, a branch of the Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center.

The Ice Cream Lab, formerly located at 6628b Delmonico Drive, has reopened at 122 N. Tejon St.
“With us, (the ice cream) starts out as a cream and it is made right in front of you,” owner William Yeager said, adding that it freezes almost instantly because of liquid nitrogen. He estimates it is about three times creamier than fresh gelato.
The building now housing the Ice Cream Lab was previously home to Michelle Chocolatiers & Ice Cream, which operated from 1954 to 2007. It was a popular hangout in downtown, and Yeager is working on a way to honor Michelle’s legacy, he said.
“When you walk in, there’s a brick wall to the right and I’m gathering photos and anything I can find … to put together a (collage) where you can come in and see the history of Michelle’s,” he said.

They were on an annual mission to count and catalog the bighorn sheep population of Pikes Peak, an effort that’s been ongoing since 1988. The volunteers gathered before sunrise to take advantage of the sheep’s most active hours — usually dawn and dusk.

Brenna decided to be a tourist in her own hometown and visit the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The Cog has been running for centuries and takes enthusiastic visitors to the peak of America's Mountain.
The venture takes around three hours round trip. While at the top, be sure to visit the Visitors Center for a peek into the history of the mountain and the events held there annually.
Do not forget to get your World Famous Pikes Peak Doughnuts. These doughnuts are made at 14,000 ft and they offer plain, cinnamon sugar, and a rotating special flavor.
Pro tip: Remember to drink plenty of water before the venture and while on top of the mountain. Outside food and beverages are not allowed, but you are allowed to bring a water bottle. This will help battle altitude sickness and keep you hydrated.

On Sunday afternoon, the arcade held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, which featured free samples, face painting, live music and more.
At the newly opened snack bar, customers can get five kinds of paninis, fresh-squeezed lemonade, smoothies and "99" ice cream cones, a vanilla cone with a Cadbury chocolate flake bar.
The roughly 200-square-foot area is based on a previous model of the snack bar, which the original arcade owners once operated in the arcade’s Skee-Ball building, according to Food and Beverage Director Carol White.

After nearly four years on Colorado Avenue, owner Clay Hapke relocated the boutique houseplant and supply shop to 101 N. Tejon St., a move he said gives the business more room to grow and a better environment for its customers and collection of indoor plants.
“I kind of became a little stagnant in Old Colorado City and wanted to try downtown,” Hapke said.
The new storefront is about twice the size of the former location and features south-facing windows, rather than north-facing. - The mustangs of the San Luis Valley defy easy definitions. Despite a credible link to some of the first Spanish expeditions into North America, the animals are not considered true wild horses under U.S. law, nor are they protected by private ownership. They exist in a legal no-man’s land, living by the goodwill of off-grid homesteaders and the tolerance of ranchers.
One of Colorado’s most recognizable works of sculpture, the infamous blue horse nicknamed “Blucifer” at Denver International Airport, was partly inspired by the mustangs in the San Luis Valley. Yet, depending on where they graze, the horses can be loaded up to sell at slaughterhouses or shot where they stand without legal repercussions.
For nearly 30 years, their fiercest advocate has been Judy Barnes. From an off-grid cabin on top of a mesa, Barnes has tracked, protected, fed and doctored wild horses through multiple generations. She identifies many by name.

Lorenzo's French Fry Palace has opened in Colorado Springs, and it's a dream spot for French fry enthusiasts. Located at 1755 S 8th St D, the menu features signature fry creations, customizable options, and fresh-squeezed lemonades.
Amelia and Brenna tried the pineapple mango and blueberry lemonades, along with the Louisiana gumbo fries and green chile fries. The gumbo fries offered rich, layered flavors with a kick of heat, while the green chile fries captured the bold, comforting flavors Colorado is known for.
Lorenzo’s French Fry Palace is open 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon-8:30 p.m. Sundays.

Hangang Ramen opened its second location in the state last month at 4435 Centennial Blvd.
The Korean-style convenience store
features a ramen station, where customers prepare their own noodles and add their own toppings.
The cozy spot has a ramen wall, displaying a wide range of instant noodle options, including Buldak, Jin and more.
Customers can also find a variety of Korean snacks, such as the viral peach ice cream and ice cups.
Hangang Ramen is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Surf Shack is bringing surfing to the landlocked Polaris Point commercial and retail development, with a grand opening held Saturday at 13208 Touchstone View.
“It should be fun,” said owner Dr. Michael Kofford, a Springs orthodontist who began planning and constructing the $10 million facility nearly three years ago. “We’re excited about it. We have had a lot of interest in it, people calling and asking when we will be open.”
Saturday’s opening was the culmination of a demanding yearslong process to bring the two-story, 12,000-square-foot recreation center to fruition. Budget and permitting issues delayed Surf Shack’s opening several times.

- Hundreds gathered on Pikes Peak Saturday for a unique Guinness World Record attempt in honor of Colorado's 150th birthday.
Participants tried to set the record for the most people simultaneously dunking donuts in coffee. The high-altitude donuts on the summit are "world-famous" and made with a special recipe.
The results of the record attempt have yet to be announced.
The event was one of many Colorado Day celebrations held across the state this weekend — including an attempt by the Colorado Mountain Club to have hikers on every 14er in the Centennial State ⛰️

- The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo family celebrated a special milestone on Tuesday as its critically endangered Western lowland gorilla baby, Sully, turned one.
The zoo marked the occasion with a birthday party honoring Sully, inviting guests and staff to celebrate the little one.
Visitors had the chance to participate in a variety of activities at the birthday party, including a card-making station, a photo booth and more. The festivities continued with guests and staff singing "Happy Birthday" to the birthday boy.
Sully was born at The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo last July and was the first gorilla baby born there in 13 years. He was born to first-time dad, Goma, and third-time mom, Asha.
In his first year, he's achieved key milestones like chest beating and interacting with other members of the troop, according to Ashton Asbury, the zoo's lead animal keeper in Primate World.

Trejo says that the best part of owning the store is the community that it has created and all the love that people have for vintage in the city.

The meeting will be concluded with a vote by the commission, and those who wish to appeal the decision have 10 days to submit the appropriate paperwork.

An extension of the gaming store and ice cream shop in Old Colorado City, the new downtown location of Dice Guys and Ice Guys leans more heavily into the ice cream portion of the business.
Ice Guys offers 20 flavors of ice cream, with options like Tahitian vanilla and salty dog chocolate as well as eclectic creations like basil with blackberry swirl, seasonal and dairy-free selections.
All are made with natural ingredients including real sugar and flavoring, without extracts. Drinks and breakfast items are also on the menu.
The game selection at the downtown location is not as robust as it is in Old Colorado City, and the game space is a little smaller.
Still, you will find the most popular board and card games: Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Exploding Kittens, Magic the Gathering and Pokémon.

- On July 12, as hundreds of firefighters were battling the 7th-largest wildfire in Colorado history, one service member rescued one of the smallest babies in the state.
Ash the Flammulated Owl was too young to fly away when he saved from the Aspen Acres blaze, which has since surpassed 101,000-acres.
Ash is a fledgling flammulated owl, and he weighs a whopping 37 grams — just less than 2 ounces. When he arrived at the Raptor Center in Pueblo, he was taken into good hands: literally, as he fits into the palm of a hand.
The tiny youngster wasn't injured in the fire, besides maybe some smoke inhalation, Diana Miller, director of the Raptor Center at the Pueblo Nature & Discovery Center, said.
When he arrived, he was timid and exhausted.
"He's starting to get spicy, which is a good thing," Autumn Waylan, a raptor rehab specialist at the Raptor Center, said.

This is Rizuto's Ice Cream South, the newest location from a local ice cream shop that's been serving Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. It opened in the Chelton Crossing Community Hub in the area formerly occupied by Stompin’ Groundz Coffee, which shut down in January.
They have 31 flavors by the scoop, specialty treats, and a rotating flavor of the day. Gazette digital producer, Amelia Herman stopped in to try their recommended coffee ice cream. In a medium waffle cone, this totaled $7.77 (with tip!).
Soft-serve starts at just $1.25, making this one of the most budget-friendly options for ice cream in Colorado Springs.
Rizuto’s South is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 2050 Jet Wing Drive.

- This week, 1,100 cadets headed to Jacks Valley for two weeks of grueling Basic Cadet Training.
At Jacks Valley, the premier Air Force training facility in the United States, basic cadets went through a 14-obstacle course not once, but three times. The training is designed to introduce cadets to military life.
This year, cadets are being pushed harder than ever before, said Col. Sarah Brehm, after being directed to up the ante by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Basic cadets will continue their training until Acceptance Day, or A-Day, on Aug. 5. They started their 47-month journey on June 24, In-processing Day, or I-Day.
The 1,100 cadets represent all 50 states, along with 17 international appointees.
