Brenna and Ajia stopped by to see what all the buzz was about and ordered the two-pupusa plate with yuca fries and fried plantains. Everything came out fresh, hot and packed with flavor.

- Four men shackled at the chest were shuffled into a GEO transport van at an unmarked immigration detention facility on Thursday in downtown Colorado Springs.
After one of the individuals was seen being arrested outside the building that houses The Gazette, a black unmarked SUV was tracked to a condominium a few blocks away at 415 E. Pikes Peak Ave., which includes the Pueblo Bank & Trust, residential units and the Department of Homeland Security, a spokesperson confirmed.
According to the spokesperson, the office is used to temporarily hold alleged undocumented immigrants before they’re transferred to another facility.
“He just wanted the American Dream,” said Inez, a 22-year-old daughter of Sergio, one of the four detainees seen leaving the building. “This is our worst nightmare.”

- Richard Gibbs and his twin brother, Robert Gibbs, were at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo last month for a belated celebration of their 96th birthdays. Dozens of family members — children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom traveled to Colorado Springs from across the nation, attended.
The identical twin brothers, of Colorado Springs, retired from the military after careers that spanned 30 years and two wars.
"They're probably the two most patriotic people you'll ever meet," said Robert "Bob" Gibbs' daughter, Michele Burchfield.

The family pet showed up near Cheyenne Mountain State Park to the Rock Creek fire Wednesday, escorting personnel to the blaze, the Colorado Springs Fire Department said in a social media post. Goldie was determined to help, munching on some fuel while firefighters worked to contain the 1.5 acre fire.
"We’re not saying he’s ready for a badge… but we’re also not saying he isn’t," the Fire Department said in the post.
As of late Wednesday night, the fire is 30% contained.

- The Aspen Acres fire burned 2,115 acres overnight, bringing the total acreage burned to 96,031 and 15% containment as of Wednesday morning.
The fire made a surge to the northwest toward Greenwood and Wetmore Tuesday afternoon that led to a firefight that lasted several hours, according to an update from the Alaska Complex Incident Management Team. Greenwood and Wetmore are in northeast Custer County, near the Pueblo and Fremont county lines.
Fire activity started to calm later in the day once the winds shifted and light rain began to fall. Crews will monitor the area for flare-ups throughout Wednesday.
“Last night, we were really concerned (about that area), but we do feel like we’ve got dozer line around it. … That area is looking a lot better than we had yesterday,” Section Chief Brad Washa said in a Wednesday morning update.

Gasoline Alley is open every night until 2 a.m. and makes for a great cheap lunch spot or a late night eat, which Colorado Springs often lacks. For both meals, we paid $31.

A Colorado Springs fire engine collided with a private transport bus at about 10 a.m. Saturday, sending nine people to the hospital and shutting down the entire block between Tejon and Bijou streets for several hours.
Four firefighters and five bus passengers were injured in the crash, Fire Department spokesperson Ashley Franco said. The extent of injuries and the cause of the crash were unknown.
As of noon, police expected the area to be closed for another three or four hours.
With lights and sirens blaring, the fire engine was responding to a possible overdose call when the collision occurred, Franco said.
The doors to the bus were pinned, so firefighters had to pry them open to get people out of the bus. The fire engine was pushed into a parked vehicle, which also sustained damage.

Everyone escaped a fire Friday that destroyed a historic home in Manitou Springs, city spokesperson Alex Riegelmann said.
Firefighters responded to the blaze around 2 a.m. at 30 Burns Road near the SunWater Spa. The home was engulfed in flames, which were spreading to nearby vegetation, Riegelmann said.
At least one person was home when the fire broke out, but everyone made it out safely. The fire threatened three nearby homes, and a damaged powerline caused other residents to be displaced, Riegelmann said.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.

- Red Mountain Trail is reached off Intemann Trail in Manitou Springs and offers some of the best views in the Pikes Peak region. Considering the steep, sometimes loose, sometimes rocky terrain, it might not be for all, but the panorama rewards all who are capable.
Trip log: 2.4 miles out and back (from Intemann Trail off Ruxton Avenue), 789 feet elevation gain
Getting there: If not paid parking in town, consider the Dillon Mobility Hub at 134 Manitou Ave. From there, the free Route 33 bus runs to the Manitou Incline; follow Ruxton Avenue down to Spring Street and the Intemann trailhead.
FYI: Hiking only recommended. Dogs on leash.

- A group of Evergreen Heritage volunteers is working to make sure every veteran buried at Evergreen Cemetery is properly recognized — even decades later.
After more than 1,000 hours of research, they’ve identified more than 4,800 veterans and have worked to secure new VA-issued headstones for those without one.
Along the way, they’ve uncovered stories like Willard Wade McKinley, a Colorado Springs native killed in a kamikaze attack during the Battle of Okinawa at just 19 years old.
For the volunteers, the mission is simple: make sure no one who served is forgotten. “These are our boys,” says volunteer Judy Speirs.

- In this week's On the Docket, justice reporter Nick Smith examines the case of Michael Foster, a Colorado Springs man accused of attempted murder in the Feb. 2 shooting of CSPD officer Dan Mork.
In court last week, a prior excessive force lawsuit surfaced alleging Foster was injured by Mork during a 2023 arrest, suffering a broken orbital bone and lasting issues including nerve damage, a traumatic brain injury and memory loss. That lawsuit was eventually dismissed.
Years later, Foster would have another encounter with police. Earlier this year, officers involved in an unrelated operation reportedly observed Foster acting suspiciously. Officers approached and pursued him, and shots were fired.
Prosecutors allege Foster — who was shot five times by second officer — initiated the gunfire.
Foster faces charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and disarming a peace officer. He is being held on a $1.1 ...

The Carson Connector is a new transit service for Fort Carson. Instead of shuttles on fixed routes, the new program is similar to a ride-share, with on-demand rides to destinations on base. Soldiers and their families can use it for free.
Riders can also get to two destinations off-base: Pikes Peak State College and the Walmart near Venetucci Boulevard.
The city of Fountain is running the program in an intergovernmental agreement with the military. Its soft launch is May 26.
