- Standing 6-foot-3, sophomore Brenna Moerman’s love for volleyball was inevitable.
Inspired by her older sister, the Doherty outside hitter has played volleyball since kindergarten. In her second year with the Spartans, Moerman has developed into a formidable force on the court with 5.2 kills per set, 366 total kills (No. 9 in Colorado) and a .308 hitting percentage this season.
Moerman’s performance has helped No. 25 Doherty qualify for state regionals for the first time since 2021 on Saturday, when it faces No. 12 Regis Jesuit (15-7) in Class 5A Region 12. After a 9-14 record last fall, Doherty is 13-9 this season — its first winning record since 2019.
“I have to say thank you to our setters,” Moerman said. “When it comes down to it, they just feed me; I’m able to get the kill. Sometimes it can be stressful, but for the most part, it’s enjoyable and I’m proud that I get to be in this position where it is stressful.”

- When Mendocino Farms was looking to establish its first Colorado Springs location, it homed in on Briargate in the city’s northern sector.
The Southern California-based fast-casual restaurant, founded in 2005, opened Tuesday at The Promenade Shops at Briargate.
It is the first Colorado Springs location and Colorado’s fourth. Mendocino Farms is known for its gourmet sandwiches, wraps, salads and seasonal soups.
Mendocino Farms expanded into the Centennial State last year, opening its first Colorado location in Denver’s Cherry Creek in May 2025. Two other locations opened in Highlands in March and on Denver’s 16th Street in May.

In last week’s Harrison soccer game at Palmer, senior Flores put up a career-best five goals on the way to the Panthers’ win in their regular season finale. But at halftime, with Harrison up 3-0, he received the devastating news that his mother-in-law had passed away.
He could barely get through the halftime speech but quickly turned his emotions into the performance on the field.
“The support from my teammates really helped me a lot,” Flores said.”They were able to help me get my emotions down and stay focused on the game, and I feel like that also contributed a lot to those goals I scored.”

- This past weekend provided a glimpse into the near future.
Weidner Field played host to the black and blue of the Switchbacks on Saturday and, on Sunday, welcomed its newest tenant, the brown, gold, red and white of the Colorado Stampede.
The Stampede is the official name of the United Football League team coming to the downtown Colorado Springs venue next spring. The name, logo, colors and branding were revealed at a launch party at Weidner Field on Sunday afternoon.
In September, the UFL revealed its plan to bring a team to Colorado Springs for the league’s fourth season in 2027, relocating Dallas Renegades coach Rick Neuheisel and his roster after the 2026 season.
The Stampede's first home game is April 11, 2027.

- The free 32nd annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races are at 1 p.m. Saturday in Manitou.
More than 10,000 visitors will line the streets to watch about 50 to 60 teams of five — four racers and one Emma in the coffin — shuttle their decorated coffins down the main drag of Manitou. Many of the teams have been coming for upwards of a decade.
The parade begins at Noon.
A fan zone and live music precede the races at 10 a.m., and at 11 a.m. visitors can head to Soda Springs Park, 1016 Manitou Ave., for vendors and food trucks. It’s also the site of the post-race party, awards ceremony and live music.
Parking options include free rides from downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City on the Mountain Metropolitan Transit buses; a $5 round-trip shuttle accessed at 1675 Garden of the Gods Road; free bike valet for those riding their own bikes or PikeRide to the event; and $20 parking at Manitou Springs Elementary School, 10 Pawnee Ave.

The Trojans senior setter has 452 assists through 58 sets played — well past the 333 Maualuga tallied in 78 sets as a junior.
“I’ve been running a 5-1 and it’s given me more opportunities,” Maualuga said. “Last year I was running a 6-2 and it was my first year setting as well. I feel like I progressed over the year and bettered myself during the summer.”

- A vehicle fire at a used car dealership early Monday was the second such blaze in about 10 hours, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
At about 5 a.m. Monday, crews reported that multiple vehicles were on fire at DriveEasy Used Cars, 155 N. Academy Blvd. The vehicles were engulfed in flames when crews arrived, but they were able to get the blaze under control. Three cars were a complete loss, officials told Gazette news partner KOAA.
Eastbound Academy at Pikes Peak was shut down, but reopened later Monday.
About 10 hours earlier, crews fought a vehicle fire a few blocks to the southwest near Delaware Drive and East Bijou Street. The vehicle, a large van, was fully ablaze when the Fire Department arrived. Engine 8 firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze.

The high-tech laboratory, called the Vineyards Research Park in city documents, will serve as a graphics card testing facility. A pair of 110,000-square-foot buildings are now in construction in south Colorado Springs, near Harrison High School and The Broadmoor World Arena.
While submitted project documents say the development is not a data center, residents opposed to the project see it as such. Like data centers, this facility will require a large amount of power, utilize a closed-loop cooling system and need large chillers to prevent the computers inside from overheating, The Gazette previously reported.

Jadhav finished the regular season with an 8-0 record at No. 1 singles and went on to earn the Class 5A Region 8 crown over Denver East’s Leo Teryazos in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) on Oct. 10. Teryazos was previously undefeated at 17-0. Before regionals, Jadhav won all of his matches in straight sets.

The Doherty senior won the Cañon City HS Cross Country Invitational at Royal Gorge Bridge and Park last Thursday in 15 minutes, 10.10 seconds, notching his third personal record of the season. Marschall’s time also ranks 12th in Class 5A and 17th in the state.
The win in Cañon City was Marschall’s second win of the year after he won the Liberty Bell XC Invitational Division 1 boys 5,000-meter race on Sept. 5.

- A study from the Colorado Department of Transportation provided evidence that wildlife measures along the busy Interstate 25 corridor on the border of Douglas and El Paso County were working as intended.
According to a state-commissioned research report, wildlife-vehicle collisions decreased by 91% after CDOT built most of its planned mitigation system. When CDOT undertook the five-year South Gap project in 2018 to widen the roadway and improve safety, the wildlife mitigation measures were baked in. The system includes five underpasses and 14 miles of fencing along each side of the interstate.
The last and most visible piece was completed in December last year: the Greenland Wildlife Overpass, which CDOT says is the largest of its kind in North America. Data on how the overpass is working is still being collected, but cameras set up by the state have captured promising wildlife activity.

The new International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe, a 12,000-square-foot giraffe barn and renovated and expanded giraffe yard, offers new ways for guests to interact with the iconic herd.
The grand opening gave guests a chance to explore the new habitat and featured free interactive and educational activities, as well as remarks from the zoo’s president and CEO, Dave Ruhl.

This week’s Gazette Preps Peak Performer unloaded on Doherty last week and finished with a career-high six RBIs, four hits and a home run in a 26-15 victory against the Spartans on Sept. 8.
The homer gave Torres her fourth of the season — she had none as a freshman — and her four hits marked the fifth time through 12 contests the Fountain-Fort Carson sophomore had three or more hits in a game.
This year, Torres is batting .561, has 23 hits, 20 RBIs and eight doubles. In the circle, Torres has collected five wins along with 39 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings pitched.
“I worked a lot over the summer during club and preparing for high school just to find my pitch and be able to hit the ball hard,” Torres said.

- The Karras family has transformed the former Red Lobster, 4925 N. Academy Blvd., into Berries Basket Cafe, a bright, welcoming restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Owner Dimitri Karras, his wife Denise, daughter Stephanie Dunn and son-in-law Ryan Dunn brought the concept from Chicago, where the family owned restaurants for years.
The expansive menu reflects Karras’ Greek-American restaurant roots, offering everything from Greek specialties and wraps to burgers, crêpes, pasta, steaks, ribs and all-day breakfast.
Brenna ventured out for breakfast and tried their bananas foster latte, stuffed strawberry French toast and barbeque waffle.

- Colorado Spring's police and fire departments took the field on Friday for their annual soccer match.
A mix of family fun and healthy competition, the teams competed with part of the proceeds going to the debra of America charity. debra is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), according to their website.
The match has taken place since 2018 and was held before the Switchbacks 9/11 remembrance match.
The game ended in a 2-2 tie with fun and good sportsmanship felt throughout the stadium.

- American flags were displayed across the city Friday as locals commemorated the 9/11 terrorist attacks that forever changed the nation 25 years ago.
From Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station to Mitchell High School to the top of the Manitou Incline, the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11 were honored with music, speeches, prayer and moments of silence.
At the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Memorial Park, the community also honored a local firefighter who died last year from toxic exposure he experienced while assisting with the recovery efforts.
More than 600 firefighters have died from illnesses linked to toxic exposure at the World Trade Center site since 9/11, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters.

- Before sunrise on Friday, firefighters from across the U.S. gathered at the Manitou Incline to walk the more than 2,700 steps in honor of the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives trying to save others in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Some Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs firefighters showed up despite having just completed their shifts. Others had a shift to look forward to after the ascent.
Many were dressed in full turnout gear, making an exhausting climb even more difficult. Others had not yet been born when the attacks took place 25 years ago.
“We already have a generation of people – adults – who were either too young to remember 9/11, or weren’t even born,” said Mark Tonin, who drove in from Montana. “I’m glad some of them showed up today.”

Banks, this week’s Gazette Preps Peak Performer, ran 10 times for 222 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-6 victory against Mitchell last week.
The Sierra halfback ran well past his total yardage from his freshman year, where Banks finished with 80 yards on 35 carries. Banks, who averaged 22.2 yards per attempt against the Marauders, shook loose from the defense for a 68-yard score in the game, which surpassed his previous longest of 54 yards Aug. 29 against Alameda.
Following Banks’ performance against Mitchell, the Stallions sophomore is tied for second in the state with eight rushing touchdowns. The Stallions also own a 2-1 record and have a two-game winning streak for the first time since 2023.

- The Cucharas is not a mighty river, but the people of La Veta knew they had a problem brewing when it ran dry at the beginning of June.
“We’re getting by,” said La Veta Mayor Doug Brgoch. “It’s not great.”
There are signs all around La Veta of moisture drawing away from the land: wells are drying up, creek beds are dusty. On the outskirts of town, the Wahatoya and Daigre reservoirs, both state wildlife areas, have been drained to the dregs to send to downstream users. Stranded, dying crawfish are the only signs of life on the cracked lakebeds.
Huerfano County, which contains La Veta and much of the Cucharas River, is in an extreme to exceptional drought. 2026 is the second worst drought year the county has experienced in the last 132 years.
Neighboring counties, especially west into the San Luis Valley, are in a similar condition.
Brgoch is hesitant to put a number on how long the town can last on its reserves...

- Easy’s Records and Vintage is bringing a dedicated record shop to downtown Colorado Springs!
On Friday (9/4/26), the store hosted its soft opening - and the store was busy within minutes.
The store, at 327 N. Tejon St., formerly operated out of CO.A.T.I. downtown under the name Vintage and Vinyl. For two years, the couple had roughly 300 square feet of space to sell old and new records,
vintage T-shirts and other music media.
Now they have four times the space.
On North Tejon, the new shop is close to new apartments, Palmer High School and Colorado College, which the two hope will be big drivers for
sales. They say they want to create a community space for music enthusiasts, nerds and fans to gather.

- Oumar Diomande grew up in the Bronx and spent the first three years of his college career in Storrs, Connecticut.
When he arrived in Colorado for the first time this past winter, he was told to hate Wyoming — so he did.
On Saturday night, as over 17,000 of his new classmates came pouring onto the field at Canvas Stadium after his team’s convincing 35-13 win over the Cowboys, he finally understood why.
“I’m not really used to rivalries,” the linebacker who had 11 tackles in the game said.
He certainly is now, though, and he wants the rest of the new-look Pac-12 to know that Colorado State’s first season-opening win since 2017 was for real.
“We’re coming,” Diomande said. “We’re building something special and we won’t go down that easy.”
For a few minutes early in the second half, this looked like the CSU of recent years.

- Dozens of hot air balloons will soon fill the Colorado Springs skies as the Labor Day Lift Off returns this weekend.
The beloved festival will kick off Saturday morning at Memorial Park for its 50th year, bringing major additions and expansions.
The morning lift off sessions are scheduled for 7 a.m. on Sept. 5-7, while evening balloon glows are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. One major addition this year is a fireworks show on Saturday night, which starts at 9:45 p.m.
The festival will feature nearly 100 food and retail vendors, live music, beer gardens, a family zone and drone shows.
This year will also see a major expansion with the new Skyfest Village on the park's northwest side, near the Fallen Firefighter Memorial. The village will feature a silent disco, silent sunrise yoga, Ninja Nation obstacle course and an extra beer garden with music from DJ Max Kruse.

- One of Colorado's oldest attractions, Cave of the Winds Mountain Park in Manitou Springs, was discovered in the 1880s and features guided tours through more than a dozen rooms and chambers filled with natural formations.
The attraction offers several ways to explore the caves, from the guided, history-focused Discovery Tour to the Haunted Lantern Tour, where guests navigate dark passages while hearing ghost stories, and the 2-plus-hour Expedition Tour for those seeking a true caving experience.

- The Wells Fargo Tower and FirstBank buildings, the two tallest and most prominent in Colorado Springs, have fallen into foreclosure.
The owners have an unpaid principal balance of about $59 million on a loan of $74 million, records show. It's unclear what factors contributed to the foreclosures.
Several other business suite properties, accessed via either building or the adjacent The Antlers hotel, are also in foreclosure, El Paso County Public Trustees Office records show.
The Antlers has not fallen into foreclosure.
Construction on the 250-foot-tall Wells Fargo Tower was completed in 1990. It's currently the tallest building in Colorado Springs.
The FirstBank building, completed in 1967, was the city's first high-rise development. It was known for decades as the Holly Sugar Building, serving as the headquarters for the Holly Sugar Corporation, a beet sugar refinery that operated locally from 1923 until 1997.

- Ash, the tiny flammulated owl who was displaced by the Aspen Acres fire last month, has finished his rehabilitation period.
Flammulated owls are Colorado’s smallest species of owl. Ash was a fledgling, just around 4-6 weeks old, when he was rescued by a firefighter and taken to the Raptor Center in Pueblo, a branch of the Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center.
After a roughly six-week stay at the rehabilitation center, the 1-ounce bird finally has enough wing strength to leave the nest; he spread his wings with a new flock on Wednesday.

Pikes Peak Lemonade Company in downtown Colorado Springs offers a variety of lemonade to try, from classics to unique combinations. Visitors can pick flavors like peach, cherry and even jalapeño. According to their website, they are the first lemonade taproom in the nation, and all their lemonade is made with organic sugar cane.
But lemonade isn't the only thing on the menu.
Among the other iced drinks options are limeade, homemade root beer, Italian soda, kombucha and Butter Beer. The spot also offers hot beverages like warmed lemonade and hot cocoa. Customers can even take home their favorite drink mixes.
