A man who was involved in a standoff with police at a Van Nuys apartment was hospitalized today for a psychiatric evaluation and
treatment of injuries he suffered in a fall, authorities said.
Officers were sent to the 6900 block of Haskell Avenue about 9 p.m. Monday on a report of some sort of problem at the location, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. The officers were confronted by the man, and a standoff ensued, police said.
Residents were evacuated, and the man set fire to his bedroom after officers broke through the door of his apartment, which had been barricaded with furniture.
About 10:30 p.m., he attempted to escape the apartment by climbing out a window while holding onto a small dog, but fell and suffered head and leg injuries, said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, and was placed on a psychiatric hold, she said.

- A brush fire on the western edge of Pacific Palisades caused firefighters to go into structure protection mode today.
About 167 Los Angeles city firefighters were rushed to Santa Ynez Canyon, Three city fire helicopters and Two Los Angeles County fire helicopters along with the Santa Monica fire department were also assigned to the fire which was reported at about 12:30 p.m.
The fire was in steep hills, north of Sunset Boulevard and about a half mile north of Pacific Coast Highway.

The residential premises of the San Fernando Rescue Mission became engulfed in fire that started in a warehouse in the 13400 block of Saticoy Street at 12:30 a.m.

- Two people were reported injured in an equestrian incident in the Hidden Valley area near Lake Sherwood Sunday afternoon. The incident was reported around 5:45 PM on a trail on a ranch in the 700 block of Potrero Road. The sheriff's helicopter and urban search and rescue responded to the incident along with several engine companies and two ambulances. The extent of injuries to the riders is unknown, they were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel. The initial report was that one of the horse fell on a rider. The rider was reported to be conscious and communicating with rescue personnel. The second injured party was not seriously hurt. The two horses involved were reported back down off the mountain and in the barn. It's unknown if either was injured in the incident. Most of the equipment that responded to the incident was released by 7 PM.

Investigators say the plants were found when real estate agents visited the house along with the owners.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A man is dead after he and two women were shot
outside a small Koreatown cafe this morning and the suspect was arrested after
crashing the car he was driving about a block from the shooting, according to a
police sergeant.
The man was later identified as Clay Allen Casey, Sr., said Coroner's
Lt. Fred Corral.
The shooting occurred outside Cafe Mak at 12:20 a.m. at 612 Shatto
Place, said Sgt. P. Llanes of the Los Angeles Police Department's Olympic
Station. Google maps identifies the Cafe as being located at that address.
Casey was shot to death at the scene and the two women suffered non-life-
threatening wounds and were transported to hospitals...

SOUTH LA - An SUV slammed into a gas station mini-mart in South
Los Angeles, but no one was injured, authorities said today.
The crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. Friday at the intersection of
Hoover Avenue and Century Boulevard, according to the California Highway
Patrol.
A green SUV went through the wall of the mini-mart at a Valero gas
station at the intersection, said a news photographer at the scene.
A light-colored sedan was also involved, the photographer said.
There were no reports of injuries, said an officer with the Los Angeles
Police Department's South Traffic Division, which was investigating the crash.

WOODLAND HILLS - Two collisions involving six cars closed the Ventura (101) Freeway in Woodland Hills for about an hour early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
It started with two cars crashing into the center divider at about 12:20 a.m., on the eastbound Ventura Freeway just east of DeSoto Avenue, said California Highway Patrol Officer Cheyenne Quesada in the Traffic Management Center.
Four other vehicles crashed trying to avoid the first accident, and Los Angeles firefighters were called to the scene at 12:27 a.m., Quesada said.
Injuries appeared to be minor, according to a video photographer at the scene who saw three ambulances leave empty.

crash with another vehicle in West Los Angeles.
The crash at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Barrington

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An employee and a patient people appeared to escape
injury when the employee backed a vehicle backed into a convalescent home for
seniors in the Palms area, a police sergeant said today.
The crash was reported around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the Country Villa
South Convalescent Center at 3515 Overland Avenue, according to LAFD spokesman

In a Thursday night news conference, Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said gunman John Zawahri left a note apologizing for killing his father and brother.
The three- to four-page note was found on his body after he died. He also said goodbye to friends and expressed hope his mother would be taken care of.

BEVERLY HILLS - A trash can leaking an unknown substance was dumped in front of a Shell gas station at the intersection of Olympic and Robertson Boulevards around noon. A Los Angeles County Sheriff's bomb squad responded to the scene and determined the trash can harmless. They found an empty gas canister inside. STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — One of the California Highway Patrol's new SUV Interceptors collided with a Porsche Friday in Studio City.
The accident happened just before 1:30 a.m. at the Coldwater Canyon Avenue offramp from the Ventura (101) Freeway, according to the CHP.
The offramp was shut down for about an hour and a half as authorities investigated the scene.
Two CHP officers were transported to a local hospital.

SANTA MONICA (CNS) - Authorities said they hoped to gain access today to
the fuselage of a private jet that crashed and burned at Santa Monica
Airport, killing all aboard.
Two cranes would be needed to lift wreckage of a hangar that collapsed
