Quick work by firefighters kept the blaze from reaching any nearby homes.
Residents say the building has been vacant for about a decade. Investigators searched the structure to make sure that no one was trapped inside.

- Description
- A natural gas line was ruptured by a backhoe in Woodland Hills, sparking a fire that engulfed the construction vehicle and prompting some precautionary evacuations.
Firefighters were sent to the 5800 block of North Shoup Avenue about 1:15 p.m., said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Fire officials said the damaged pipe is a 4-inch line. Utility crews were sent to shut off the flow of natural gas while firefighters worked to prevent the flames from igniting nearby trees and buildings. No injuries were immediately reported. A Los Angeles Department of Water and Power truck was parked near the backhoe that burned in the blaze, but it wasn't immediately clear if the utility was doing the digging that damaged the gas line. Southern California Gas Co. officials frequently urge residents to call 811 before digging to ensure no underground utility lines could be damaged by the work.

- Description
- An out-of-control, wind-driven wildfire burning in the Lake Isabella area of Kern County has left two people dead, destroyed about 100 homes and has grown to about 30,000 acres in less than a day, prompting Gov. Jerry Brown to issue a state of emergency in the area.
The two fatalities were confirmed by the Kern County Fire Department about noon Friday.
A man and a woman were found outside one of the homes that burned down, and it appears that they were trying to get to safety when they were killed, said Ray Pruitt, a spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. The Associated Press later reported that the man and woman were an elderly couple. The victims have not been identified.
Homicide detectives were at the scene where the bodies were found, but it is unclear exactly how they died and how the fire started.
The blaze started about 4 p.m. Thursday, and had burned nearly 30 square miles in 18 hours.
