- A green light that streaked across the night sky over the Southland and was seen from the Mexican border to Central California was apparently a meteor or some other kind of heavenly body falling to Earth. The green streak lit up social media as well as the sky when it was seen over the downtown Los Angeles area around 10 p.m. Tuesday. In a statement released to City News Service, U.S. Navy Lt. Laura Stegherr of the U.S. Strategic Command said: ``After investigation, U.S. Strategic Command's Functional Component Command for Space . concluded that the information provided does not correlate to any of the more than 16,000 on-orbit cataloged objects tracked and listed in USSTRATOM's Satellite Catalog and the publicly available website www.space-Track.org. Therefore, we have determined that the reentry of a man man-made object did not occur at this time.'' That means the green light that millions of people viewed Tuesday night was not a satellite or space junk but probably a meteor burning ...

- Firefighters on Wednesday freed a tree trimmer who was stuck 75 feet up a palm tree and dangling upside down.
The rescue took place shortly after 10 a.m. in the 200 block of West Atara Street which is in the unincorporated county area near Monrovia.
Fire Inspector Chris Reade said the man climbed a palm tree and was cutting leaves above him. The part where the fronds grow out of broke loose and landed on the man, according to Reade.
“It knocked him off, “ the inspector said, adding that the tree trimmer ended up dangling upside down.
Reade said firefighters used chain saws to cut the palm fronds. They tied a harness to the man and lowered him.
He was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The blaze erupted at a two-story home in the 700 block of Grand Avenue at about 1 a.m. Responding firefighters found flames shooting through the roof.
Firefighters say the pack-rat conditions made it tough to get the fire under control, but it was eventually knocked down around 4:30 a.m.

- One person was killed when two vehicles collided, sending one into a fire hydrant, early Monday morning in what authorities said was a DUI-related crash in Hollywood.
A woman walking her dog told NBC4 she called 911 to report a possible drunken driver after she was nearly struck by one of the drivers. The driver of the blue KIA continued speeding north on Curson Avenue and went through a stop sign before slamming into a Honda Accord, according to investigators.
An occupant of the Honda Accord died at the scene. The KIA driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
"Unfortunately, this is just someone who was driving through the neighborhood," said Capt. Edward Pape, of the Los Angeles Police Department. "And, out of nowhere, comes a driver who hits them from the side and a life is now taken."
