- France has witnessed weeks of protests known as the Yellow Vest movement in which angry citizens have taken to the streets. At first it was over fuel tax hikes and taxes in general but it very quickly spread to a wider section of the population ... and became an expression of discontent with the political leadership and the policies of President Emmanuel Macron. So how have these protests been seen by outsiders and visitors to France? RFI's Ollia Horton spoke to Dr Gemma King - a Lecturer in French Studies at The Australian National University, in Canberra. She has been in Paris for the last month, accompanying students from the course she teaches which combines French language, culture, history and politics. Witnessing the protests up close gave them a unique perspective on contemporary French life. Gemma King, also a specialist in French cinema and is the author of a book called "Decentring France: Multilingualism and Power in Contemporary French cinema”
