- Description
- Spanning the River Cher in the Loire Valley stands one of France's most striking châteaux, Chenonceau.
Built in the early 1500s, it quickly earned a nickname: the "Château des Dames," the Château of the Ladies, for the remarkable women who shaped its history.
Diane de Poitiers, mistress of King Henry II, transformed the estate and built the arched bridge across the river. But when Henry died, his widow, Catherine de' Medici, forced Diane out and made the château her own, adding the famous gallery that turns the bridge into a grand hall.
Through the centuries, Chenonceau survived wars and revolutions, even serving as a hospital during the First World War, and marking the border between occupied and free France in the Second.
Today, it remains one of the most visited châteaux in France, a monument not just to Renaissance architecture, but to the women who built it. RFI visited it recently.

- The Château de Villandry is a Renaissance château in the Loire Valley, around 18 kilometres from Tours in central France. The site dates back to the 11th century, when a medieval fortress stood here overlooking the Cher River. In the mid-16th century, Jean Breton, Secretary of Finance to King François I, transformed the fortress into the château that stands here today. Villandry is particularly known for its formal Renaissance gardens, which include ornamental flower gardens and carefully designed vegetable plots. One of the château’s events this summer was The Nights of a Thousand Lights, held over three evenings from 31 July to 2 August. During the event, more than 2,000 candles were placed along the pathways of the gardens, illuminating the grounds after dark. RFI was there.

Besides the impact on skiing, the melting has created a glacial lake, whose overflowing, could pose a risk to the ski resort of Tignes that lies below the glacier. As a result, measures such as siphoning, digging a channel and pumping have been taken to reduce the water volume in this lake.

But look deeper into the archives, and you'll find something rarer still: a copy of the Constitutions des treize États-Unis de l'Amérique — the American Constitution's earliest state charters, printed in French on Franklin's own press at Passy in 1783, and gifted by Franklin himself to the French foreign minister. Two objects, one story: how an American founding father became an honorary Frenchman
