The asteroid which measures approximately 340 metres in diameter will be at less than 32000km from the Earth's surface which is closer than some satellites in the geosynchronous orbit. Although it doesn't pose any immediate risk to Earth, the extremely close approach in 2029 provides a unique opportunity for scientific research using ground-based telescopes and space missions.

Description: Gaspard Monge transformed mathematics in the 18th century with two foundational discoveries. His method of descriptive geometry — representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions — became the mathematical language behind every technical drawing and engineering blueprint ever made. He later pioneered differential geometry, giving mathematicians the tools to study curves and surfaces in three-dimensional space. On Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, he also became the first person to scientifically explain the desert mirage, correctly deducing that layers of heat above the sand bent light to create the illusion of water. His name has been on the Eiffel Tower since 1889.

Consisting of a 10 metre deep water tank, it is used for the initial spacewalk training of astronauts. Description: As the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft carrying Frenchwoman Sophie Adenot and three other astronauts was launched towards the International Space Station by a Falcon 9 rocket, the European Space Agency astronaut Raphaël Liégeois felt a surge of emotion.

The 37-year-old Belgian, who will be the next European to fly to the ISS on a long-duration mission, watched the launch live at an event at the Cité des Sciences et de l'industrie in Paris.

Speaking to RFI English, Raphaël Liégeois said he felt very emotional while watching the lift-off.
"I saw a previous colleague, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski's launch last summer. Here, Sophie is the first one of our class (of 2022) launched into space. It's a very special moment," he said.

The ESA astronauts class of 2022 consists of five new European astronauts, out of which Sophie and Raphaël have been assigned for their first spaceflights to the International Space Station ISS.

Description: The Fresnel lens is named after its inventor, the French engineer and physicist Augustin Fresnel, whose name is engraved on the École Militaire side of the Eiffel Tower. It quickly became essential to lighthouses, greatly extending the range of their beams and transforming maritime signalling, saving countless ships and lives. Beyond this engineering achievement, Fresnel also made major advances in the theory of light. Born in 1788, he died in 1827 at the age of 38.
RFI English’s Dhananjay Khadilkar spoke with astrophysicist Pierre Léna, a member of the French Academy of Sciences.
