Windhoek Mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja said the City's Fire Brigade responded to over 2 000 fire-related incidents, with nearly 1500 occurring in informal settlements.
The mayor made these remarks on Monday during the International Fire Safety Week , which runs from 06 to 10 October.
Larandja said fires remain one of the greatest threats to life and livelihood, especially in informal settlements.
In addition, Larandja said that through funds and sponsorships received during last year's International Fire Safety Week, the City was able to purchase around 200 smoke detectors, which have been installed in households in informal settlements.
This is the second year that Windhoek is hosting the event, having reached over 5 000 community members last year through awareness activities, and thousands more through schools, churches, and social media engagement

Namibia is making steady progress towards eliminating discrimination in the education sector. This is according to the ministry's deputy executive director, Edda Bohn, who addressed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Youth, Civic Affairs, and Community Development in Windhoek on Thursday.

The BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform says with its vast uranium deposits, Namibia is welcome to join the emerging economies group to better harness the full

The platform's chief coordinator, Eslie Pule, told NewsOnOne there are benefits to joining, including partnerships, which could benefit Namibia in the long-term.
Speaking on the sidelines of the week-long World Atomic Week, held in Moscow, Russia last week, Pule said the BRICS nations are on a deliberate drive to
increase their role in shaping the new global energy landscape.
Pule said the group accounts for almost one-third of operational nuclear power plants and more than 70% of the power units that are currently under-construction.
The original BRICS group was comprised of Brazil, Russia and South Africa but expanded in 2024 after Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joined.

Although more women are enrolling in science courses and graduating with bachelor's and master's degrees, only a few are advancing to doctoral levels or becoming associate professors in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
This is according to women in science of developing world Namibian National Chapter Chairperson Professor Theopoline Amushendje, saying the organisation is encouraging women to take up leadership roles.
Amushendje was speaking at the first annual national conference of the women in science in Windhoek. She said while funding for research in STEM remains limited, Amushendje said they have been able to go out to schools to encourage young girls to participate in science.

Ten children of the liberation struggle were stung by a swarm of bees on Sunday morning at Ndilimani camp at Brakwater , just outside Windhoek. Only three sought medical treatment after experiencing swelling from the stings.
The group was attacked while relaxing at a cuca shop within the camp, playing cards, when a swarm of bees suddenly descended on them. The group scattered, with some seeking refuge in makeshift toilets, while others ran to cover themselves with blankets.
When NewsOnOne visited the camp on Tuesday, several individuals were still visibly swollen on their hands and backs.
Thirty-eight-year-old resident Saima Mbinda pleaded with the government to relocate them from the premises.
