Tourism minister, Indileni Daniel, has called for a shift beyond a leisure-only tourism model to one that also embraces business tourism, saying the move is critical for economic diversification, investment attraction and job creation.
Daniel made the call on Tuesday in Windhoek at the launch of the Namibian Convention Bureau, as the country’s tourism sector rebounds to over one million visitors after the COVID-19 slump.
She said Namibia can no longer rely on leisure tourism alone, arguing that meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism offers higher economic returns and job-creation potential, in line with the country’s 500 000-job target.

This makes Namibia the first African country to host the biggest and complex operation.
The exercise will bring about 250 experts and dignitaries to the country and will test CTBTO’s readiness to conduct on-site inspections once the treaty comes into force.

Simonis Storm Securities noted revenue generated from unregistered accommodation providers, informal tour operators, and countless small businesses serving travellers.
Economist, Almandro Jansen said when tourists spend on transport, food, fuel, and retail across extended value chains, these multiplier effects rarely appear in formal tourism accounts.
Jansen also highlighted that Namibia is rapidly becoming a global and regional filming destination, which is likely to improve tourism figures.

Swapo City of Windhoek candidate, Paulus Immanuel, has blamed the city’s administrative system for delays in service delivery, arguing that poor accountability among officials continues to hinder sanitation improvements across the capital.
Swapo governed Windhoek for nearly 30 years after independence in 1990, with 11 of its leaders serving as mayor during that period, before the party lost its majority in 2020.
Immanuel made the remarks on Thursday in Windhoek during a public debate organised by the Namibian Sun ahead of the upcoming local authority elections.
He said service delivery requires both quick intervention and long-term reforms, and that inefficiencies among officials, rather than political changes, have left communities struggling with uncollected waste and deteriorating infrastructure.

Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi have cautioned seven-seater drivers against transporting passengers for reward without the required taxi permits.
While inspecting vehicle documentation at launch of the Okapuka traffic checkpoint, commonly known as the Okahandja checkpoint on Thursday, Nekundi found two seven-seaters vehicles operating without the required documentation.
