Road works along Windhoek’s Eveline Street in Greenwell Matongo have come to a standstill after City of Windhoek allegedly failed to pay the contractor, Ndakalimwe Investment. As a result, the workers downed tools over a week ago due to unpaid July salaries .
However, city spokesperson Lydia Amutenya refuted the claims, saying the allegation that the city failed to pay the contractor is incorrect.
During a visit to Eveline Street, no workers were present on site. A resident said the construction work has been on hold for the past three weeks.
According to the company’s foreman, who preferred to remain anonymous, the City of Windhoek has not paid them. As a result, the company has been unable to compensate its workers for July, leading to the suspension of road construction over the past two weeks.
