- Wildfires in northern Minnesota near Duluth have scorched 45 square miles of forest. They were driven by unusually hot, dry weather and fierce winds. But the spruce budworm also played a key role.
The budworm is a caterpillar that devours the buds and needles on balsam fir and white spruce. As markets for balsam have shrunk and land managers have suppressed fires, balsam have been able to grown denser and older, creating an ideal environment for the spruce budworm to spread and thrive and creating an unhealthy forest prone to wildfires.
