- Would you buy cannabis from a dispensary owned and operated by your city government? A few cities in Minnesota think yes and are looking at opening their own, which would make Minnesota only the second state in the U.S. to try its hand at government-run marijuana dispensaries.
One line in the state’s new cannabis laws allows for cities and counties to “establish, own and operate a municipal cannabis store.” The law appears to be the first of its kind in the country and has prompted cities to research whether they want to open their own dispensaries.
While the idea has been floated and rejected in various states, state representatives in Minnesota wanted to come up with a Minnesota-specific model. In Minnesota, communities have had success with municipal liquor stores and some cities have expressed interest in taking the same approach with cannabis.
The state’s Cannabis Office is still working on making rules for this new industry but they ...

“You can listen to music nowadays without ever touching a CD, a record, or a tape,” said Brokenrope, who is Sicangu Lakota. “It’s just so digital and ubiquitous all the time. But to hold the physical thing and then to see yourself represented in that, and to see your community, your people, your family represented in that, I think that’s just so important for us.”

The concept is to plan streets and buildings so ice and melted snow don't accumulate in places where people walk and drive, reducing the need for deicing salt that pollutes lakes, rivers and streams.
Chloride is a permanent pollutant, and 67 Minnesota water bodies now have chloride levels higher than state standards set to protect fish and aquatic life.

- Description
- A steady stream of funding from Minnesota’s universal school meals legislation that passed in 2023 has the potential to help remake the way lunch is done across the state.
At Roseville Area High School, like in many schools, offering meals free-of-charge means more students are eating in the cafeteria. That increased participation in turn increases projected revenue, which lets the school reinvest in the program by hiring more people or increasing their hours, as well as sourcing fresh and local food.
Research shows farm-to-school initiatives are economically smart, keeping money circulating in local rural communities while making a healthy difference for students. Studies of farm-to-school programs show that kids who participate are more willing to try new foods and they eat more servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
