- Description
- With the first World Cup match set for Monday, maritime safety and security are top of mind for Seattle-area law enforcement and emergency agencies as they prepare to protect a waterfront that sits close to the stadium and is integrated into tournament festivities.
Seattle is one of only a few host cities with a major waterfront tied directly to World Cup events, creating a unique security challenge.
The U.S. Coast Guard says extensive maritime measures are in place for the tournament. So much so, it widens the scope of safety and security.
Cmdr. Dan Delgado with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound said for fans and visitors, it may be natural to assume safety and security in and around the stadium, but the waterfront is so close.

- With demand increasing for shelter services at a facility that is already operating at capacity, the Everett Gospel Mission is moving forward with a $30 million expansion project that will more than double the number of beds available for people experiencing homelessness in Snohomish County.
The nonprofit is currently in the permitting phase for a major redevelopment of its Smith Avenue campus and hopes to break ground later this year.
The project would triple the shelter's overall footprint by connecting two recently acquired warehouses to the existing facility, creating one contiguous building designed to provide expanded shelter, health, and recovery services.

- Summer is almost here! And for a lot of families, that means road trips and backyard cookouts.
But it also means something that doesn't make the highlight reel: A budget that quietly stretches past its limit.
Camps, activities, vacations, home projects, and back-to-school shopping—it all adds up!
And even families that feel financially prepared can find themselves stretched thin by September.
ARC Seattle's Holly Menino spoke with Gesa Credit Union's Derek Wing about why summer hits family budgets so hard and how you can enjoy a vacation without derailing your family's whole budget.
Wing also offered some advice for getting ahead of back-to-school sales.

The debate centers on a controversial city CCTV pilot program that has become a political flashpoint in recent weeks as Seattle prepares to host six FIFA World Cup matches.
Seattle's Emergency Operations Center has long relied on existing traffic cameras during major events and will continue to do so throughout the World Cup.

Deputy Carlos Raya, who is assigned to Burien Police, was driving home from work on May 20 when he spotted a column of black smoke coming from an apartment complex on International Blvd in the city of SeaTac.
Raya pulled into the parking lot and saw flames shooting from the deck of an apartment, along with a woman standing outside.
"I asked her, 'How long has this been going on?'" Raya said. "She said, 'Five, 10 minutes, I don't know.' We had a fire going, and nobody was out of the building except her?"
Nobody had called 911 yet. Raya alerted dispatchers to the situation, then went inside to start evacuating residents as the fire spread.

Barrick said she was told the employee had the same birthday as Adolf Hitler.
She admitted that she originally wasn't super comfortable doing it, but ultimately decided on a cartoon version of Hitler, as a character from the TV series "South Park."
