- Vice President JD Vance announced Monday that the Trump administration has permanently suspended nearly 870,000 borrowers from future Small Business Administration (SBA) loans and other agency programs as part of its crackdown on suspected pandemic-era fraud.
The borrowers are tied to an estimated $39 billion in suspected fraud across 45 states and territories, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said during a White House Fraud Task Force event in Kansas City, Missouri. With earlier actions in five states, the SBA has now suspended borrowers tied to an estimated $49 billion in suspected fraud nationwide, Loeffler said.
“If you screwed the American taxpayer, the federal government is now going to say you’re cut off. No more,” Vance said.

- Drivers heading north through downtown Seattle this weekend should prepare for major backups as two significant highway closures are expected to slow traffic to a crawl.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close the I-5 express lanes, leaving just two northbound lanes available.
The work is part of the Revive I-5 project and involves maintenance on the Ship Canal Bridge. WSDOT said crews will be working on drainage pipes on the underside of the upper bridge deck.
The first closure is scheduled from 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, to early Monday, Sept. 14. A second weekend closure is planned from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.

- When police responded to a hit-and-run crash in July 2025 on 7th Avenue SE in Everett, they located the body of 39-year-old Brent DeArman and quickly suspected he had been run over by a car and dragged to death.
Detectives set out to find the driver. Using Flock cameras and surveillance video from nearby homes and businesses, Everett police tracked down the driver who they allege killed DeArman.
The 69-year-old man told them he thought he had hit a bag of trash - but police say the evidence suggested otherwise.
Police arrested the driver in September 2025 and booked him into the Snohomish County Jail on a felony charge of hit-and-run involving death.
The driver appeared in court the next day, but was released as prosecutors said they needed more time to determine if they would file the recommended felony charge against the man.
But a year later, the case is still awaiting a review by prosecutors.

Recreational divers were the first to discover piles of dead fish at the base of electrified cables that hang from the I-90 bridge.
Shahein Moussavi, the president of Global Underwater Explorers, took photos of the piles, and his fellow diver Travis Eiler shared those photos in December with a diver who works at the Washington State Department of Transportation.

- When police responded to a hit and crash in July 2025 on 7th Avenue SE in Everett, they located the body of 39-year-old Brent DeArman and quickly suspected he had been run over by a car and dragged to death.
Detectives set out to find the driver. Using Flock cameras and surveillance video from nearby homes and businesses, Everett police tracked down the driver who they allege killed DeArman.
The 69-year-old man told them he thought he had hit a bag of trash - but police say the evidence suggested otherwise.
Police arrested the driver in September 2025 and booked him into the Snohomish County Jail on a felony charge of hit and run involving death.

- Pressure is mounting on Seattle city leaders to act quickly to get a handle on an encampment that has grown across several properties in the Rainier Beach neighborhood.
The site is located along 42nd Avenue South near Beacon Avenue South and is mainly centered on two private lots. Neighbors told KOMO News last week they are dealing with daily issues stemming from the encampment and say the response from the city has been nonexistent.
While the city hasn't committed to a timeline for closing the camp, the cleanup work could take weeks, according to Ryan Baxter of Junk King Removal Services. Baxter has been part of some of the biggest encampment cleanups in the Seattle area, including in the woods near the Green River.
“It’s just dangerous — it’s dangerous for people to be out in this area," Baxter said. “You name it, it’s in there — beds, fridges, drugs, safes, needles, feces — anything that could be hazardous to your health."

Donalds, founder of the Education Freedom Foundation, said parents should ask schools what materials are used to teach Sept. 11, arguing that some lessons place too much emphasis on Islamophobia rather than the attacks themselves and the nation’s response.

- A man was shot and killed by Federal Way police Thursday evening after officers said he pointed a gun at them outside The Commons mall.
Multiple people called 911 around 6:40 p.m. to report a man armed with a gun who was pointing it at people in the mall parking lot, according to the Federal Way Police Department.
Police said one caller reported the man said he was waiting for officers to arrive.
The man was described as being in his 20s or 30s.

At about 6:21 a.m., an employee called to report that his semitruck had been stolen from a Safeway at 1715 Broadway.
Snohomish County deputies quickly spotted the truck and saw it enter southbound Interstate 5.

A building permit was submitted to the City of Tacoma on behalf of Walmart and its drone partner, Wing Drone Delivery, on Wednesday.
The permit description provided by the applicant is for "the installation of fencing and storage for drone delivery operations at the existing Walmart supercenter," city officials confirmed.
The permit for potential drone delivery operations is for the Walmart supercenter at 1965 S. Union Ave. in Tacoma and is currently in the city's screening and intake process.

“The clearest message” from an August poll of Seattle voters, the coalition wrote, is that residents expect the city “to act with urgency, fund the actions needed to improve safety, and provide a clear plan for measuring progress.”

Police report he got into a physical altercation with a student before lunchtime in the hallway on Sept. 8, and part of what happened was caught on camera.
Federal Way Public Schools would not give specifics amid the police investigation, including the extent of the student's injuries, though an email sent from the principal to families notes the paraeducator is now on paid administrative leave.
The roles for paraeducators can include working with special needs students or providing classroom support for general education.
The video shows a fight before multiple people step in to break it up, and the staff member was escorted off campus.

- As the nation marks 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks, The Salvation Army is urging people to remember what it calls the simplest lasting lesson of that day: show up for one another.
The organization said first responders and survivors at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville carried “a weight none of us can fully imagine.” The Salvation Army said it stood beside them from the first day and for years afterward, working to be whatever helped them keep going.
When The Salvation Army asked its own responders what helped most, the organization said they all pointed to the same thing: small acts of kindness.
Now, 25 years later, The Salvation Army is asking people across the country to “Be That Something” for someone facing hardship.

- Families of the victims killed and injured in three separate shootings in Belltown over the weekend are demanding answers, as Seattle police continue to investigate.
No arrests have been made in any of the shootings.
The violence began early Sunday morning near Clay and Denny streets, where 21-year-old Matthew Lanske was shot three times while out with friends. His family says the group had come across a street takeover when a robbery attempt turned violent.
"My brother had seen that, so he ran over to try to assist and get control of the gun, not only for his friend, but for the whole community, and ended up getting hurt," said Lanske's sister.
Lanske survived, but his friend was killed in the shooting.
