- The Morrill Fire’s impact on property taxes, especially in Garden County, dominated discussion Tuesday as Governor Jim Pillen and members of his cabinet held a wildfire recovery roundtable at the Oshkosh City Auditorium.
The panel heard from Caleb Johnson, who assists more than 20 counties in the Panhandle and elsewhere with their budgets, and he told them Garden County is in a very unique situation.
Johnson said because of the property valuation reductions expected through Form 425 filings for damaged or destroyed property, Garden County, among all the fire-impacted jurisdictions, has its back up against the wall.
“If it (total property valuation) goes down 42 percent, in order to be compliant with the (maximum) levy, which is fifty cents, they will have to lower their tax asking,” said Johnson, “and here’s where it becomes problematic is, even if Garden County gets state aid right now, that solves the problem this year. Locations immediately north of Crawford’s city center were evacuated, including areas south of Dodd Road, west of Dodd Road, and Dodd Road itself at Holmgren Road and South of Cottonwood Road, and a preliminary advisory to be prepared to evacuate remains in place for Crawford residents. The Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home confirmed that all of their residents had been safely evacuated Wednesday evening. In all, 22 structures and 95 people are under active evacuation orders. - More than $100,000 raised locally through the Oregon Trail Community Foundation’s Morrill Fire Relief Fund will now help wildfire victims across the region.
Since launching the fund in May, OTCF has collected more than $143,500 through online donations, contributions dropped off at Platte Valley Bank and Riverstone Bank, Platte Points donations, and donor-advised funds.
After reviewing how the money could have the greatest impact, a committee selected by OTCF voted to direct the funds to the Nebraska Sandhills Rancher Fire Relief Fund, which has raised more than $1.5 million for those affected by the wildfires.
The fund is overseen by representatives from impacted counties to help ensure assistance reaches those with the greatest need. OTCF thanked local donors and community partners for their support during the recovery effort.

- This 1-year-old Pit mix is a bundle of energy, spunk, and just the right amount of neutral chaos! Kai is the kind of dog who keeps life interesting - whether she's zooming around the yard, tossing a toy in the air, or showing off her goofy personality that will have you laughing before you even realize it.
Kai can be a little shy when meeting new dogs, but once she warms up she does well and enjoys having canine friends to play with. With a little patience and a proper introduction, she'll settle right in and let her fun-loving personality shine.
Once Kai feels comfortable, her silly, playful side really comes out. She's the kind of girl who will keep you smiling with her goofy antics and happy energy. If you're looking for a dog who will make every day feel a little brighter (and a little more entertaining), Kai might be your perfect match.
?? Kai will not do well with small livestock, so she'll need a home without them.

- A quick-moving fire has rapidly grown along Highway 20 in Sioux County.
The South Fork Fire was first reported late Tuesday afternoon west of Fort Robinson State Park in the heavily timbered areas near Soldier Creek Wilderness, about 13 miles east of Harrison.
The National Weather Service in Cheyenne said that there were lightning strikes in the area between 4:00 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
As of 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, the fire had grown to 8,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Due to the rapid growth of the fire, the Nebraska Forests and Grasslands said that managers had ordered an incident management team, as well as a Complex Incident Management Team.
Evacuations were ordered for the bottom of Smiley Canyon along White River Road shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Highway 20 is closed from Crawford to Harrison in both directions. The fire, which started on the nor...

Just after 4:00 a.m., the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the intersection of County Roads 109 and 28, where a bolt of lightning had sparked a fire in an oil-filled tank.
Thanks to a quick-thinking local operator on scene, the system was safely shut down before crews arrived. Firefighters used specialized foam to extinguish the blaze, spending nearly an hour and a half cooling the tanks.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

- Fireworks aficionados in Gering will have a little more than half as many days as previous years to set off their pyrotechnics.
The issue of banning or limiting the use of fireworks came before the council again Monday evening, needing a supermajority of six to change the city’s related ordinance and waive three readings so it could take effect immediately.
The city’s Public Safety Committee, comprised of several council members, had recommended that fireworks discharge this year be limited to seven days, but that was too much for some members of the body, as the vote to change the ordinance failed on a 4 to 3 vote, with Rebecca Shields, Julie Morrison, James Jackson in dissent.
That was followed by a motion to approve a five-day window, but that effort also failed 4 to 3, with Michael Gillen, BJ Kinsey and Susan Wiedeman voting against it.
The council then settled on a six-day compromise fo June 29 through July 4, with th...

- Flash flooding Monday night triggered emergency rescues and major road closures in Morrill County.
Bayard Fire Chief Michael Harimon tells KNEB News that emergency crews executed multiple water rescues and evacuations overnight, though many residents chose to shelter in place.
The damage to infrastructure is severe. Highway L62-A is closed until further notice from Moomaw’s Corner to Highway 385. Officials say roads and bridges both north and south of the highway are either completely washed away or impassable.
Drivers are urged not to rely on cell phone GPS maps, which are routing people onto washed-out county roads, leaving multiple drivers stranded. If you must travel, the only safe detour is south through Bayard to Bridgeport, then back up Highway 385.
Assessment of all damage is ongoing and they should have more information later today.

“So we’ve got to make sure the pathways are clear from middle school all the way to the time they become a health care professional. They should not wonder what they need to do to become a nurse or a dental hygienist from middle school. There should be clarity,” said Davies. “And then we should also look where are the needs of some; for some of our students, they can come to Omaha or Lincoln, others want to train close to where they were born and raised. And some of them have to train close to where their their families are because of, you know, commitments, maybe on the farm or maybe they have...

In Part 1 of this Building Nebraska conversation, the Scooter’s Coffee founders share the remarkable journey that led them from radio broadcasting in Nebraska to life in Alaska, California, and back again. Along the way, they owned restaurants, operated an ice cream wagon, sold door-to-door, and discovered firsthand that experience is often earned the hard way.
The idea that would eventually become Scooter’s Coffee wasn't born in a boardroom. It started when Don noticed a small drive-thru coffee stand in California and recognized something others hadn't yet seen—a business model built around convenience, quality, and customer service.
Hear the story behind the first Scooter’s location, the challenges of introducing specialty coffee to Nebrask...

- For Nebraska hay producer Austin Rice, the 2026 season is off to a dry start — but recent rains are bringing some optimism.
Near Wilsonville, Rice says SR Farms entered spring after one of the driest winters he can remember, with little snow and limited moisture. Still, timely rains are helping conditions improve as the growing season begins.
SR Farms manages up to 2,000 acres of alfalfa and ships hay across 28 states, with demand rising after recent wildfires across Nebraska and neighboring states.
“We’re happy to get what we can get and hoping this kind of primes the pump for some more,” Rice said.
Despite drought concerns and volatile hay markets, Rice says producers are staying hopeful for strong cuttings ahead.
