- Two Nebraska teachers and Husker alumni have been selected to receive the 2026 Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award, presented by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Education and Human Sciences. The award recipients are Stacy Moore, special education coordinator at Scottsbluff Public Schools, and Shaun Hoover, Spanish teacher at Millard North High School.
The Battey Award honors the life and career of Freda Drath Battey, a 1923 graduate of Nebraska’s Teachers College and longtime public school teacher in Ashland, Nebraska. Battey’s family established the Distinguished Educator Award in her memory in 1986.
The criteria for the award are “excellence in teaching, coupled with recognition in other complementary education activities, such as counseling of students or initiation of student-oriented programs.”

Ricketts also highlighted Nebraska’s success in lowering suicide rates, and the ways he's bringing those solutions to the nation. He told reporters both issues remain among his top priorities. Ricketts said the nation is experiencing an epidemic of loneliness and isolation, which is an even more serious challenge for the nation's veterans, and he highlighted a second measure to establish a working group to target the root causes. The senator said the goal is zero deaths from suicide, and until that goal is reached, he would continue to fight to improve mental health and expand resources that help prevent someone from taking their own life.

- Scottsbluff's Fiscal Year 2026-2027 budget, which takes effect October 1, will carry the lowest mill levy of any first-class city in Nebraska, according to Finance Director Lane Kizzire.
Kizzire presented the budget summation after what he described as six months of work with city department heads. The budget's property tax request will remain unchanged from the past four years at $2,230,934.10, even as assessed valuation citywide rose about 8.8% this year — a combination that pushes the city's mill levy down.
"That drops our mill levy down to 0.164356, which is the lowest of the first class cities in the state of Nebraska."
While the overall budget is set to increase 61%, Kizzire said that growth is tied almost entirely to the proposed aquatic center. "If it doesn't pass, we won't do it. We won't spend it, and we'll go way down next year," he said.

The auction will be conducted on eBay, beginning at 8 a.m. CT Tuesday, Oct. 6. Bids will be accepted for seven days, with the auction concluding just before 8 a.m. CT Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The lineup of auction items will be available for online viewing and bidding when the auction goes live Oct. 6 at https://www.ebay.com/usr/nebraska.unclaimedproperty.

The Forest Service says heavy rains have made the access road to the Soldier Creek Wilderness and campground unsafe. The road is in the Pine Ridge Ranger District.

- A Sept. 29 preliminary hearing has been set for a Terrytown man accused of selling methamphetamine during a WING Drug Task Force operation earlier this year. Abel Valdez is charged with two Class 2 felony counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Methamphetamine. In court documents, investigators say the 51-year-old sold a total of 7.7 grams of meth to Cooperating Individuals during WING controlled buys in late January and early February. An arrest warrant was issued late last month, with Valdez taken into custody last Friday. Bond in the case was set at $50,000, ten percent, during his initial appearance in Scotts Bluff County Court.

The finding was one of many highlighted during a news conference by Governor Jim Pillen and Executive Director Jenn Gjerde of the Nebraska Tourism Commission.
“We say it all the time. In Nebraska, it’s the people, it’s the people of Nebraska,” said Gov. Pillen. “We have extraordinary attractions that we can brag about and enjoy right here. - Three decades ago, Nebraska farmers were raising about 2.5 million acres of soybeans. Today, they’re planting more than 5 million, and far more of those beans are staying in Nebraska.
About 30 years ago, the state's soybean crop had an average yield in the mid-30-bushel range. This year, USDA is projecting a statewide average yield of 60 bushels per acre.
But the biggest change may be what happens to those soybeans after harvest.
Greg Anderson, a Newman Grove farmer and longtime Nebraska Soybean Board member, says the state has gone from relying heavily on exports to developing a much larger in-state processing industry.
“Today in 2026, we're looking at three out of every four rows of our state's beans stays right here in Nebraska,” Anderson said. “The soybeans are processed and crushed right here.”

Early Harvest is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 24th when they start the factory up, with regular harvest set for October 6th.

City officials are telling motorists that the crossing at Avenue B will be the first to be closed, with the work by rail crews expected to last two or three days.

The House approved the bipartisan AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act by voice vote Tuesday evening. The bill would require automakers to provide access to AM broadcast stations in new passenger vehicles without charging an additional fee.
Supporters of the legislation have emphasized AM radio’s role in emergency communications, as well as its importance to rural communities for local news, weather, agricultural information and other programming.
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where companion bill S. 315 has more than 60 bipartisan cosponsors. The Senate Commerce Committee previously advanced the measure, but it still needs approval from the full Senate before it can be sent to the president.

- Mitchell Mayor Paul Murrell has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor Theft by Taking and Hindering an Audit of Public Accounts, following a scathing state audit report released a year ago.
Eleven other charges, including theft and official misconduct, were dismissed under the plea deal.
The theft charge stemmed from Murrell using city-owned gravel and asphalt fillings for a client of his personal handyman business.
Judge Leo Dobrovolny fined the 59-year-old $2,000 and ordered him to pay over $12,500 in restitution. No jail time or probation was given.
Under state law, Murrell must now be removed from office, ending a term marked by four police chiefs, a city manager's resignation, and early departure of a council member who cited "a history of communication breakdown."

The fundraiser features the tongue-in-cheek theme, “An Evening of Elegance… Spent Absolutely Anywhere But Here,” with supporters encouraged to spend the evening at home in their favorite chair, knowing their donation is helping animals in need.
Executive Director Catie Baird says that every contribution can help with the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of the animals they serve .

- Nebraska’s financial picture remains on track for Fiscal Year 2027, according to Gov. Jim Pillen, following the release of the latest General Fund Receipts Report from the Nebraska Department of Revenue.
Net General Fund receipts totaled nearly $653 million in August, exceeding state forecasts by $7.6 million, while sales and use tax collections came in 16% above projections for the month.
Through the first two months of the fiscal year, sales tax receipts are running more than $60 million ahead of forecast, helping offset weaker individual and corporate income tax collections.
Pillen said the numbers show Nebraska’s revenue remains on track despite historically low income tax rates, noting that individual income tax receipts are only slightly below last year’s pace and income tax refunds are down $37 million from a year ago.

- The Western Community College Area Board of Governors was presented the budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year that will completely pay off all of Western Nebraska Community College’s existing debt, positioning the college for long-term financial stability.
The college plans to pay off approximately $1.8 million in debt, eliminating all existing debt in the next fiscal year.
“With the College in a financially free position, we benefit both the College and the taxpayers in our service district, “Board Chair John Stinner said. “We’ve put ourselves in a much stronger position to navigate changes in the state budget, and allowed us the opportunity to look ahead at the possibility of any major improvement projects.”

- Sentencing has been delayed for a Scottsbluff man who was caught with two pounds of methamphetamine during a November traffic stop in Gering. Michael Rivera had been scheduled to be sentenced September 11th after pleading no contest to an amended charge of Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute, a Class 1D felony. Rivera requested a continuance of Friday's sentencing hearing so he could attend a medical appointment. Judge Andrea Miller approved the request, and sentencing has now been continued to November 24th. The state plans to recommend a prison sentence of three to eight years, and the Class 1D Felony conviction carries a mandatory minimum of at least three years incarceration

- The attempted opening of an adult entertainment business in Scottsbluff that was the buzz of the region has prompted the city of Gering to approve zoning changes that would limit where such a business could locate in that community. At Monday's council meeting, City Engineer Annie Folck assured members that no such business is currently seeking to locate in the city, but staff wanted to be proactive on the subject. During the public hearing in the related zoning ordinance, Folck said the language was somewhat different than in other zoning amendments.
