- The former property manager of the Circle S Lodge in Gering has been arrested on a slew of charges including child abuse and negligent animal cruelty.
Court documents say 44-year-old Renee Johnson was fired in February, and two days later staff went to her old room and found drug paraphernalia and a dog that appeared to be near death.
Gering Police arrived with a search warrant and said the room smelled of rotting food, decaying trash, and feces.
An emaciated border collie, three adult cats and a kitten were rescued from the abandoned room, and school documents showed that Johnson's two kids had been living there as well.
An arrest warrant was issued this spring and served earlier this month in Laramie County, Wyoming.
This week , Johnson plead not guilty and has requested a jury trial in Scotts Bluff County Court.

- Description
- As of Sunday afternoon, containment on the South Fork Fire in the Northwest Nebraska panhandle was 42% and acreage remained at 32,818 acres with approximately 562 personnel assigned.
The greatest area of containment is on the southern edge of the fire, in Divisions Alpha (where the town of Crawford is located) and up to the north to the division break with Division Zulu to the northeast, and in Division Juliet.
In these divisions, firefighters are patrolling and securing the containment line, as well as mopping up any lingering areas of heat. Fort Robinson also has containment line around its entire perimeter.
Fire crews continue to maintain a presence in Crawford with both day and night shifts.
Yesterday, on the west side of the fire, cooler, cloudy weather conditions and higher relative humidity allowed fire managers to use a direct strategy to suppress the fire growth above Cottonwood Road that took place Friday night. ...

Federal and state officials emphasized that fraud against Medicare and Medicaid harms taxpayers and vulnerable populations and will be aggressively prosecuted. In February of 2025, Nebraska A.G. - Description
- The Morrill Fire’s impact on property taxes, especially in Garden County, dominated discussion Tuesday as Governor Jim Pillen and members of his cabinet held a wildfire recovery roundtable at the Oshkosh City Auditorium.
The panel heard from Caleb Johnson, who assists more than 20 counties in the Panhandle and elsewhere with their budgets, and he told them Garden County is in a very unique situation.
Johnson said because of the property valuation reductions expected through Form 425 filings for damaged or destroyed property, Garden County, among all the fire-impacted jurisdictions, has its back up against the wall.
“If it (total property valuation) goes down 42 percent, in order to be compliant with the (maximum) levy, which is fifty cents, they will have to lower their tax asking,” said Johnson, “and here’s where it becomes problematic is, even if Garden County gets state aid right now, that solves the problem this year. But what ...
