- Nebraska State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg reports that his office has returned more than $13.7 million in unclaimed property so far in 2026 — and he’s encouraging all Nebraskans to search NebraskaLostCash.gov to see if they have money waiting to be claimed.
From Jan. 1 through July 15, Nebraska's Unclaimed Property Division returned $13,783,664 across 11,408 claims, with an average paid claim of approximately $1,200. During all of 2025, the state returned approximately $19.7 million through nearly 20,000 claims.
"Our office is working hard to return unclaimed assets to rightful owners," Spellerberg said. "This isn't the state's money — we’re simply safeguarding it until the owners or their heirs come forward to claim it. The Unclaimed Property Division aims to make the search and claims process as simple as possible."

Clerk Kathy Welfl told the council the modification was based on an update to the Open Meeting Act approved by the Legislature, with other changes as well.
Welfl said the change regarding regular meeting notices will allow the city to save a little bit of money.
Notices for public hearings and special meetings will still be required to be publicized in the local paper as they have been in the past.

- Mosquitoes collected from Panhandle trap sites in Scotts Bluff and Morrill Counties have recently tested positive for West Nile virus. These are the first confirmed positive mosquito pools of the season in the Panhandle. The results help Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD) and other local health departments identify where the virus is present and where people may be more likely to encounter mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus.
Mosquito surveillance sites across Nebraska routinely trap and test mosquitoes throughout the summer. Human cases are also monitored as part of West Nile virus surveillance. Currently, fewer than five human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Nebraska; exact numbers are suppressed because case counts are low.
West Nile virus is contracted through the bite of a mosquito. It begins with flu-like symptoms that can include a slight fever and headaches, though 8 out of 10 people never develop symptoms. Severe symptoms of ...
