- Coming off the program’s 16th nine-win season in the last 100 years and its first since 2019, the University of Hawaii football team will look to set the tone for another winning season Saturday at Stanford.
The Rainbow Warriors hit the road Thursday following their final practice in the islands, with head coach Timmy Chang and his staff receiving a send-off from members of the UH athletic department at the Lower Campus.
Hawaii will face Stanford for the third time in four years, including a 2025 season-opening victory over the Cardinal in Manoa.
After months of preparation, the Warriors are ready to begin their second season as a Mountain West program.
Senior nickelback Elijah Palmer said the team has maintained its focus throughout the offseason and now must balance its excitement with composure.

The matchup features a unique connection between the two programs, as Rainbow Warriors coach Timmy Chang and Cardinal coach Tavita Pritchard are former quarterbacks who have gone on to lead their respective alma maters. Both also have Polynesian heritage.
Saturday’s game will be designated as Stanford’s Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration Night. The Cardinal will wear special decals and apparel as part of a collaboration with Island Avenue.
Pritchard said the significance of the celebration adds another layer to the matchup, particularly with Hawaii’s roster featuring numerous players of Polynesian descent.

Third-ranked Kapolei is among them.
After its scrimmages and season opener were canceled because of weather, the Hurricanes finally made their long-awaited debut last weekend, rolling past Waipahu 50-15.
Now Kapolei faces its biggest test yet Saturday night against fourth-ranked Kamehameha, with last season’s playoff loss providing plenty of motivation.
The Hurricanes fell to the Warriors in the state tournament nine months ago, a defeat that has remained fresh for the program.

- Former University of Hawaii tennis standout Andre Ilagan advanced to the second round of U.S. Open qualifying Tuesday with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Tristan Boyer in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The Farrington graduate and Kalihi native earned the win as a wild-card entry into the qualifying tournament.
Ilagan converted 63% of his first-serve opportunities and won 73% of points when his first serve landed in.
Ilagan will face France’s Hugo Gaston in the second round of qualifying at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York.

- University of Hawaii soccer freshman forward Olivia Dianda made program history Monday, earning Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors in the Rainbow Wahine’s first weekly conference award since joining the league.
The California native received the recognition after scoring the first two goals of her collegiate career Saturday, helping Hawaii secure its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Idaho.
Through Hawaii’s first four matches, Dianda has scored twice on five total shots, with both goals coming in the victory over the Vandals.
Dianda said the transition to the collegiate level has required her to adjust to a faster pace of play.
“The game is definitely different at the college level,” Dianda said. “I just did my best to work as hard as I possibly could and just pick up the pace because the speed of play is way higher than all the levels I played at before.”

- Three days after finalizing a five-year contract extension, University of Hawaii football coach Timmy Chang and the Rainbow Warriors continued preparations Tuesday for the 2026 season opener at Stanford.
Hawaii held a closed practice at Iolani School, moving off campus to work on a natural grass surface ahead of Saturday’s game against the Cardinal at Stanford Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors enter the season with heightened expectations after generating significant buzz during the offseason. Hawaii is seeking its first season-opening road victory against a power-conference opponent since defeating Oregon in Eugene in 1992.
“There’s definitely a sense of urgency, excitement,” Chang said. “Whether you’re coaching or you’re playing, you still get all those good juices and that good feel. It’s just a different focus, and it’s a fun time.”
Chang said the team must now translate its offseason work into execution.

- Ikaika Aki has been named the fifth head coach of the University of Hawai‘i women’s water polo program, UH Athletics Director Matt Elliott announced Tuesday.
Aki returns home after spending the past four seasons as head coach at Loyola Marymount, where he was named Golden Coast Conference Coach of the Year in each of the past two seasons. The Honolulu native and 2006 Punahou School graduate takes over a Rainbow Wahine program entering its 30th season.
Aki led the Lions to back-to-back GCC championship titles and consecutive appearances in the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship in 2025 and 2026. Loyola Marymount’s 2025 NCAA berth marked the program’s first tournament appearance since 2012.

The University of Hawaiʻi collaborated with longtime UH Athletics partner Hawaiian Airlines to feature the Pualani patch on the team's jerseys.
