- Big island police say their investigation is still in the preliminary stages, but at this time, they do feel the officer who shot and killed a man Wednesday afternoon was justified.
“I would say that rock hitting someone is absolutely able to cause death or seriously bodily injury, and in this particular case, it does not appear at this time, the officer had an alternative given the circumstances and the way the things played out,” said Chief Reed Mahuna, Hawaii County Police Department.

Founded in 1967 by Henry “Baldy” and Edith “Aunty Edie” Van Gieson, the Nānākuli-based club has spent generations creating opportunities for personal growth through the art of Hawaiian canoe paddling.
Club Director Alfred Van Gieson, the founders’ grandson, shares how the organization continues to inspire paddlers through discipline, teamwork and a strong sense of ʻohana.
Preparing for the 41-mile journey across the Kaʻiwi Channel requires months of physical conditioning, mental preparation and trust among teammates.

- A band of heavy rain and thunderstorms is approaching Oahu Thursday morning, bringing the potential for flash flooding through the afternoon.
The band has organized east of Kauai in the Kauai Channel as tropical moisture continues to move north toward the islands. Some of the heaviest showers could produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
The Flood Watch has been canceled for Kauai as drier air moves in and shower activity decreases. However, the watch remains in effect for Oahu, where periods of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue.

The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine each spent the past 14 seasons in the Big West, with both programs now entering their first season in the Mountain West.
The conference released its 2026-27 preseason polls Wednesday, with the Hawaiʻi men’s team picked to finish sixth with 99 points.
New Mexico was selected first with 179 points and nine first-place votes, narrowly edging Grand Canyon, which received 178 points and 10 first-place votes.
Hawaiʻi was represented at media day by Tanner Cuff and Isaiah Kerr. Beyond the two returning players, the Rainbow Warriors welcome 13 newcomers after winning the Big West championship in their final season in the conference.

- HONOLULU (KHON2) --October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and according to new BBB data Hawai'i consumers continue to lose money to scams. Many of these cyber scams are geared towards their accounts and personal information.
Cybersecurity hits everyone who shops, works, banks or communicates online frequently. In the Hawaii data the Better Business Bureau reviewed, they received 337 reports of online purchasing scams, with about $158,000 in reported losses in just the past year alone. They also noticed more than 200 reports involving phishing and identity theft.
Several key actions can be taken to ensure a safer online experience. First, strengthen your passwords and turn on multifactor authentication. Use a strong, unique password for every important account that you use frequently. Second, keep a careful eye on your financial identity including bank and credit accounts for activity you do not recognize.
