One of the most influential figures in Hawaiʻi sports history, Jones transformed the Warriors into a national powerhouse during his nine seasons as head coach from 1999 to 2007, leading the program to a school-record 76 victories, two conference championships and an appearance in the 2008 Sugar Bowl.
A former UH quarterback in the 1970s, Jones returned to Manoa in 1999 following the program’s winless 0-12 campaign in 1998. He left the NFL coaching ranks to accept what he described as his dream job, taking over a Hawaiʻi program in desperate need of a turnaround.

- The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team has been hitting all the right notes during its 10-match winning streak, but this past weekend, it was assistant coach Will McDonald who stole the show.
McDonald, a native of Surrey, England, delivered a memorable pregame performance on the electric guitar, playing the national anthem and “Hawaii Ponoʻi” before the Rainbow Wahine took the court.
The performance showcased a different side of McDonald, a longtime musician who earned a Bachelor of Music with honors in professional music performance from the Academy of Contemporary Music.
“My dad works in the music industry, and he played guitar as well,” McDonald said. “From a really young age, he was part of the first role model that I was like, ‘I want to do that.’ So that was always kind of the career goal growing up. I wanted to be a musician.”

The Rainbow Wahine entered the contest riding the nation’s fourth-longest active winning streak and looking to strengthen their position in the race for one of four spots in the Mountain West postseason tournament.
Hawaii got off to a strong start when Nalani Damacion converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute, giving the Rainbow Wahine an early 1-0 advantage.
However, UNLV responded with an equalizer before halftime, sending the teams into the break tied at 1 in a physical contest played under slippery field conditions.

Among the players making the most of their opportunities is sophomore wide receiver Josiah Fetui, a Saint Louis School graduate who has emerged as a contributor in the Rainbow Warriors’ passing attack.
