- Larry Ginoza, the legendary former Waianae High School football coach whose teams became synonymous with excellence on the Leeward Coast, died on Saturday, family members, friends and school administrators confirmed. He was 89.
Ginoza built one of the most successful dynasties in Hawaii high school football history during his 20 seasons leading the Seariders from 1965 to 1984.
Over that span, Ginoza compiled 189 victories, still ranking third all-time in Hawaii prep football history behind only Cal Lee and Wendell Look.
Under his leadership, Waianae captured nine Oahu Interscholastic Association championships and four Prep Bowl titles, establishing the Seariders as one of the state’s premier programs.
An Iolani School graduate, Ginoza played under the legendary Father Bray before embarking on a coaching and educational career that left an enduring impact on generations of students and athletes.

In the men’s division, former Seabury Hall state champion and current UCLA golfer Tyler Loree delivered the round of the tournament, firing an 8-under-par 64 to surge past the field and claim the championship at 2-under for the week. Loree finished one stroke ahead of runner-up Josh Hayashida.
Entering the final round several shots off the lead, Loree credited a shift in mindset for his dramatic comeback.
“I was just honestly trying to hit good shots, have a good process,” Loree said. “I feel like the last couple of days I was a little bit hard on myself, so I was trying to just have as much fun as I can today. I tried to tell myself positive things after every shot, and it paid off today.”

Nakaoka, coming off an impressive freshman season at Oregon State, is tied atop the leaderboard with Kahuku graduate Ava Cepeda after 18 holes of competition.
The three-time OIA Player of the Year enjoyed a breakout collegiate campaign with the Beavers, earning all-conference honors and helping Oregon State reach NCAA Tournament play.
“Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better freshman year,” Nakaoka said. “My teammates and coaches made it so much fun, and I got to play some really great courses.
