- Hurricane season has been busy, and the National Weather Service has 3 hurricanes on their radar. They include Lowell, Karina and Marie.
Hurricane Lowell at a Category 4 with maximum sustained winds at a 150mph. It's path around the islands is being closely watched especially for that eventual "curve" towards the north. Once that right turn happens Lowell is projected to pass the west side of Kaua'i late Monday evening to early Tuesday morning. Impacts to islands will include big surf and increase in winds.

- The sole runway at Kona International Airport had to be shut down on Thursday, Sept. 3 due to another crack.
Six flights were diverted before crews could patch it -- this is the fifth similar incident since early 2024.
Travelers flying into and out of Kona faced more frustration on Thursday afternoon. The only runway closed from about 1:30 to 3 p.m. after crews discovered a crack in the pavement.

- Coming off a 1-2 showing against three quality opponents on opening weekend, the University of Hawai‘i women’s volleyball team bounced back Thursday with a dominant performance in the opening match of the Outrigger Invitational at Bankoh Arena.
The Rainbow Wahine swept Utah Tech, the reigning Western Athletic Conference champion, while overcoming the absence of outside hitter Cha’lei Reid, who was ruled out before the match with a shoulder injury.
Hawai‘i received contributions throughout the lineup to fill the void.
Tali Hakas brought her usual energy and recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Miliana Sylvester added six blocks, while Panna Ratkai led the Rainbow Wahine with 12 kills.
The victory improved Hawai‘i to 2-2 on the season.
The Rainbow Wahine continue the Outrigger Invitational on Friday against Loyola Marymount. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bankoh Arena.

- Waipahu junior defensive back Ali’i Togiai-Woodard is this week’s “Cover2 Rising Star,” presented by the Hawaii National Guard.
Togiai-Woodard is continuing a family football tradition. His father, Tavita Woodard, played three seasons at the University of Hawaii from 2011-13.
At 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, Togiai-Woodard has already attracted significant college interest. He has received Division I scholarship offers from six schools, including Arizona, BYU and Hawaii.
Togiai-Woodard opened the season with an impressive performance against defending state champion Campbell, recording five tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup in Waipahu’s convincing victory. He also contributed on offense, hauling in an 8-yard touchdown reception.

Five years later, in August 2023, wildfires devastated Lahaina on Maui. At least 115 people died in the disaster, while thousands of residents were displaced. About 2,170 acres burned in the Lahaina area, with more than 2,700 structures exposed to the fire. The estimated cost to rebuild Lahaina reached $5.52 billion.

- The University of Hawaii football team opens Mountain West Conference play Saturday with a nationally televised rivalry game against UNLV at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
