- The 22nd Annual Celebration of Life Lantern Floating Event in Hilo is the largest lantern floating event on Hawai'i Island. Over 2,500 people are expected to attend and create an atmosphere of healing and remembrance for our loved ones.
A bon dance headed by the Hilo Bon Dance Club and the Tsukikage Odori Kai Dancers will start things off. Through the afternoon expect to see chant, blessings, mele and hula and live music. Guests are encouraged to have personalized luminaires which be release at sunset in Reeds Bay at sunset.
The 22nd Annual Celebration of Life Lantern Floating Event happens 3pm-7:30pm at Reed Beach in Hilo on Sunday May 24th. Free parking is available at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium with shuttle service to and from the event between 2pm-7:45pm. More information online at hawaiicarechoices.org

- Hawaiʻi Pacific University Athletics announced it will launch women’s flag football this fall, becoming the first university in Hawaiʻi to offer the sport at the collegiate level.
The addition gives HPU 11 women’s sports in its NCAA Division II athletics program, which also includes six men’s sports and co-ed cheer.
Women’s flag football was added to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program in January 2026, creating a pathway toward NCAA championship status. The sport is among the fastest-growing in the United States at the youth, high school and collegiate levels and is scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

The Rainbow Warriors secured the program’s third NCAA championship on May 11 with a victory over UC Irvine, marking the team’s third national title in the past six seasons.
