Description: After going through over 14,000 football related ER visits across the country, a group of UH John A. Burns School of Medicine students found something surprising. Football injuries are going down.

Back in 2014, high school football across the country implemented the targeting rule. The rule prohibited forceful contact above the shoulders, aimed at preventing upper body injuries and concussions.

Hawaii doctor honored as physician of the year

Those are the traits that the Hawaii Medical Association sees in Dr. Kore Liow, who is their 2026 Physician of the Year.

Dr. Liow came to the islands in 2009 with his wife, Michelle, and founded Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience to address Hawaii's shortage of physicians and specialists. His clinic is dedicated to advancing care and research on neurological conditions in Hawaii, such as Alzheimer's. Now it serves over 20,000 patient visits a year.

It's small enough to hold in your hands.

"It's fully self-contained: solar panel, batteries, cellular telemetry, and this sensor looks down at a surface, pings every second," said Brian Glazer, Hohonu Founder and CEO.

But this device is keeping watch over a lot of water.

Developed by Hawaii-based company, Hohonu, the gauge measures water levels every second and sends updated information online within minutes.

Description: Kauaʻi officials are urging residents to prepare now as Hurricane Lowell’s forecast track brings the storm dangerously close to the Garden Island early next week.

The forecast remains uncertain, but forecasters expect Lowell to make a sharp northward turn similar to the path Hurricane Iniki took before devastating Kauaʻi in 1992.

Officials stress that Lowell is not expected to necessarily follow the exact same path or cause the same level of destruction as Iniki. But because Lowell could be near major hurricane strength when it makes its closest approach Monday, the county is preparing for significant impacts.

Hurricane Karina on a path north of the islands and expected to weaken. Hurricane Marie is off the coast of Baja, California and at a Cat 1.

The Rainbow Wahine, coming off a 1-2 showing at the season-opening Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, open the three-day tournament against Utah Tech (2-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Hawaiʻi will face Loyola Marymount (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday before taking Saturday off. The Rainbow Wahine will conclude the tournament against former Big West rival UC San Diego (2-1) at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The tournament marks the second weekend of competition for first-year head coach Joshua Walker, who became the fourth head coach in program history.
